MAKING COMICS
I've bought "Making Comics" by Scott McCloud, and so far I think it is the best book ever on the subject. There are better books on drawing styles, or how to draw, but this guy is brilliant in how he includes everything that the other books leave out. And the best part?.... The entire book (over 250 pages) IS a comic! It's a comic about making comics! Awesome. I give it the highest possible recommendation, I mean, he really seems to know his stuff, and puts it across so clearly. I bought it at Borders for $40, but I am sure you could find it cheaper online or something.

I think I have another Scott McCloud book on comics, perhaps one of the earlier ones, and I agree! They are fantastic - it's like a thesis in comic-book form :)

And it's good to see you on LJ again, Matt! :D How are you going?

Yeah, I want to get all his books, but heck , I don't even have time to read the ones I already have!
I'm going good; moving house over the next 4 weeks, working hard, and trying too find motivation to do more drawing. Motivation, and time. Usually I have either one or the other, but never both. sigh. :)
How YOU going?

I'm stuck in the middle of that one! I've found it a hard slog, but then he approaches it more from the point of view of an artist, and I am not one.

I really loved Understanding Comics—particularly his analysis of western comics vs. manga, and the five (or was it six?) different kind of panel transitions. I have yet to read Reinventing Comics (though I do own it!) Apparently that one is quite controversial and has a great emphasis on web-based comics (using flash, etc.)

Oh, and you might like this, Matt: Dreaming Methods. It's a site devoted to projects integrating narrative, flash animation, music, graphics, etc. Some very interesting stuff there!

I reckon I'd better check it out, too. I've had my eye on it. The Brisbane libraries don't have it, so I may have to spend money!

Or you could just look at what mattybake does and try to do something similar!
Nice tip Matt.
