Advice
Hey, next year I'm thinking that I'm going to make a really solid go at getting commissions and so on to live professionally as an artist. The thing is that I'm not really sure how someone gets work in the industry. Anyone got advice for me? | | Friday, June 19th, 2009 | 7:08 pm [mattybake]

Quick and Easy Rim Lighting
Hi guys, I wanted a quick way to do rim lighting when colouring in Photoshop, so this is what I came up with, maybe you all know this method already but what the hey. 1. Put down my flat colours, slightly darker than I normally would: 2. With the brush tool on whatever brush you want (I used airbrush), change the brush mode to "Linear Dodge", with an opacity of no more than 20: 3. Use your brush wherever you want rim lighting-the more you brush a spot, the brighter it will become. Select the colour you are about to brush on first, ie; if you are lighting a green shirt, use that same green, or slightly lighter, as your paint colour. After laying the flat colours, this next picture was done using nothing but the linear dodge setting and a bit of blue airbrush in the shadows. Easy! 4. I wanted some shadow on the bottom half of the crowd, to draw the focus to the top and add some depth, so I selected that area with the lasso tool on a 15px feather, and then in the variations pallette I added a touch of blue to that selected area: Obviously there are better ways to colour things, but I found this to be quicker than how I normally render highlights, and I was still happy with the result. Holler if you found this helpful! | | Thursday, May 14th, 2009 | 7:55 pm [kbeilz]

3D Coat
Hi folks, I came across a cool-looking piece of 3d art software for a very reasonable (but still currently out of my reach) price. The programmer has developed a strong reputation for listening to users and implementing their requests quickly and well. You can see the software here: http://www.3d-coat.comI also came across a link to the programmer's Christian testimony: http://www.3d-coat.com/testimony/testimony_1.html | | Wednesday, March 11th, 2009 | 3:14 pm [richardsmith]

Second Opinions
Hey, I've been doing a job for... some American company, and I've just done an scene from Gethsemane. I was wondering if there was anything you guys reckon I need to change, or tips, or that manner of thing. GethsemaneGethsemane no blood | | Saturday, February 14th, 2009 | 6:11 pm [kbeilz]

I'M VERY HAPPY!
Why, you ask? 100 copies of my "Valiant Little Artist" comic arrived in the mail today; I'm officially self-published. I hereby pop the cork on this bottle of cyber-wine and pour you all an imaginary glass to celebrate! You can get a copy at the online Comixpress store for $2.95U.S plus postage: http://store.comixpress.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1278But it might be cheaper for Australians to buy it from me directly using paypal. I'm hoping to sell some at SupaNova for $4 each, but even if I sell none at all, I'm just buzzed that I finally got off my tuckus and published something, even if it's something I drew 13 years ago, yikes! Here is a sneak preview of a few pages from the comic: | | Thursday, February 12th, 2009 | 4:32 pm [richardsmith]

Walkies!
Ok, after quickly practising walk cycles a couple times I decided to animate Jal in a walk. It's hand drawn and frame by frame...why I chose squares I don't know but I can't seem to keep things simple (=M=);;. Anyway here is a design sketch. ^_^ (I hate to watermark my stuff, but I've seen other artists do it when posting on the net and I think its a good idea to get in the habit. ^_^) http://www.geocities.com/bek_curlz/Jal_design_wm.jpgAnd here is the swf. Hopefully you have a swf player :D www.geocities.com/bek_curlz/J_walk_FINAL.swfI'm not a fan of majorly using motion tween in flash (it makes me cry (T^T). Is there...another way or another program that allows the user to do animation not frame by frame but....not like...weird sliding movements? Undead
Well, this took longer than planned. Just a warning, this started as a desire to do something entirely in black and white, Sin City-style, and so I decided to experiment quite profusely - which means I more or less defaulted to 'shocking'. So, it'll be weird. Even though by page 3 the writing and art had more or less deteriorated to nonsense (which I accredit to the idea not being fully formed), I still think of this as a successful experiment. I did learn that Frank Miller I am not, though. Page 1Page 2Page 3Page 4 | | Sunday, January 4th, 2009 | 11:57 am [mattybake]

OPINIONS NEEDED
Happy New Year, gang! So anyway, I've decided to self-publish a comic I did back in high school, just for fun. I've coloured the cover, then I thought it might look cool to sepia-tone it, to give it a more 'ancient fairy-tale' look. Now I can't decide which version to use. As the cover is the point of contact for the viewer, I want to go with the best one possible, so I would really value any opinions as to which version would work better. Thoughts? | | Thursday, December 25th, 2008 | 11:44 am [richardsmith]

Genji Got this in my inbox this morning from the Art Gallery of NSW:
GENJI The world of the Shining Prince opens 12 December
2008 marks the 1000th anniversary of Japan's oldest novel, The Tale of Genji. The story has long been a source of inspiration for Japanese artists, appearing in countless scrolls, folding screens and albums. This exhibition brings together 79 works from Australian collections, including paintings, ukiyo-e prints, woodblock printed books and manga comics.

Color comics
Hi people, I don't often get to colour my work, but here's a new style I tried- for the backgrounds, scribbling over a base colour, letting it peek through a bit. Kinda like I do with a real painting. Well, it's just an idea. Here's the first page: See the rest on http://r-pfitzner.livejournal.com/ | | Sunday, November 9th, 2008 | 1:26 pm [kbeilz]
