Chapter 25: "Family Matters" Word count: 3100
[...in which the Crimson Squad plot gets flung at the FFX plot, and everything becomes twice as complicated.
Also, Rikku calls the Cactuar Patch, and needles Auron.

So, well, I've been buried in dissertation, sinus infection, being BLIND in one EYE (life imitating art?!), and trying to make some amount of money online (ha), and let LJ lapse for several months. Wow, time flies.

I needed a break before I could get all my ducks in a row on this new phase of the saga. Posted on my own Journal (full headers there), with a handy 1-paragraph recap at the beginning so you can remember what the heck was going on, I give you:

So I've finally gotten around to posting the rest of the chapters to 'Hymns of Fayth' here on LJ. As promised, there are a few minor changes to some chapters. Only two though. If you don't want to go back and reread them you don't have to, the changes are not very important to the story. In chapter two I only added a bit of Lulu's and Auron's conversation about helping the Crusaders round up the escaped sinspwan. In chapter seven I altered the scene with the Warrior Monks and Lulu.

(Apparently some locals throw fits even when you add breasts to snow people, so we toned down Lulu's cup size)

Note: white outlines are due to my clumsy attempt to poke at the levels/curves in Photoshop to bring out more details/shadows in the white snow without turning the background to dark murk.

I did all of Auron; Mom did most of Lulu and then I added a few details (eye, lips, belts). Note the "chopsticks."

The snow was dry powder, so getting it to stack or stick was nearly impossible.

UPDATE 12/27: I tweaked Mom's Lulu the next day and gave poor Auron his jug of nog.

The Auron/Lulu Shrine was over a year out of date, the graphics were ugly, it used frames, and it needed an overhaul from top to bottom.

I've started posting Hymns of Fayth on my LJ profile and starting with chapter two there will be a few changes. It won't be anything too major, just a few minor dialog changes and a small added scene here and there. I'll make a note here where a chapter is altered from its original version.

Summary: AU where Lulu is a summoner starting her pilgrimage around the same time as Yuna. She has no guardian and travels alone to defeat Sin until she is saved by a legendary guardian who has washed up on Djose beach. He offers her his services, but for a price. She must help him find his lost companion and take them both to Zanarkand with her. Reluctantly she accepts, unaware of the dangers and truths the man will soon unveil to her.

Even though auronlu already posted the link to my story, I wanted to post something here as well. I would like to reiterate that I am desperately in need of a beta and would be very grateful to whoever is up for the challenge. I am very new to writing fanfiction, Hymns of Fayth is my first try at it. I am still developing my style and I do realize I have some areas I need to work at. Any help would be very welcome at this point. So please read and review the story! Critical feed back is welcome.

Summary: AU version of the game with Lulu starting out as a summoner from Djose Temple, and Auron soon becoming her guardian. Looks like Tidus will be a character later.

Review: I've only read chapter one, so I can't give an in-depth review. The writing and characterization could use a little polish. Nonetheless, it's an original premise which raises some intriguing plot threads for Lulu. There's some satisfying Aulu interaction, particularly in the Gruff!Auron department. I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars, call it a promising beginning by a novice writer, and keep reading.

Edit: Having read all that's posted so far, I'd stick with my assessment: rough in a way you'd expect from a novice writer (I think most of this was written the summer before she started college), but with enough meat to make for an interesting story. It suffers from a problem I've encountered myself: because canon characters tend to be cool/hawt/powerful, and because we tend to write from one character's POV, that character sometimes morphs into Mary Sue. The problem is aggravated by tweaks to Lulu's abilities and background. On the other hand, this writer keeps coming up with fresh twists I haven't seen anyone try in a fic before, including a maester-politics sub-plot focusing on the relationship between Seymour and Mika. The author's also looking for a beta, if anyone has time/inclination to help out a writer learning the ropes!

Title: Love Her and Despair, the ongoing Auron/Lulu + everybody else saga.

I last left you at the end of the disastrous Operation Mi'ihen, Yet Again, with the Crusaders of Djose fighting a losing battle against Sin. At the end of the battle, Lulu sent a large lightning bolt as a love letter to our erstwhile heroes. (Well, actually, she was blowing up another fayth statue.) Auron encountered that most common of enemies, Fade to Black.
