Modern "post" punk/hardcore revival goodness
Alrighty well this is definitely a wide genre to touch on. Its impossible to clarify truly what epitomizes any "post" genre, thats what makes it interesting to delve into these sort of pseudo-classifications. In this case post-punk is one label i truly despise being that I grew up listening to alot of punk music and being that I am an iconoclast at heart I never understood the purpose of sublabeling genres of music to the infintesimal point of absurdity. Post-Punk is innately punk music, just not written to the typical standard of what had progressed to the typical commercial norms across the last few generations of punk music. So I guess just to make things easier on the masses we label this genre so because it doesnt encompass the mohawks and 3 cord minute long songs we picture when we hear the words punk music. What makes this confusing though is "post" punk has progressed along with the changes, increased influence and access to all styles of music.....blah. Im done ranting. It is what it is.
Being that Im only working with less than a fraction of my record collection I decided to keep it simple and stick with artists of the last decade of music, namely this decade....So here are ma'picks.
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of the Dead - "It Was There That I Saw You"
I had to throw these guys out there because this song is the first track of my one of my favourite albums of this decade. It is a fantastic concept album that explores feelings pain love despair and hope. So would that make these guys emo-prog-post-punk-hardcore-rock revival maybe with a dash of indiecore. who knows...its good stuff though. If you dont own this album buy it somewhere!!
At the Drive In - "Lopsided"
Best rock band from Texas ever. well after stevie ray vaughn....and zz top. lol. Im not describing these guys at all, if you havent heard them youre missing out. These these these guys are about as post hardcore emo punk as a post hardcore emo punk can get though. lol. great song btw. buy the album!!
Desaparecidos - "Greater Omaha"
This is a side project from the bight eyes guy. I forget his name and i dont care terribly for his style of tunes in bright eyes(but im not doubting his songwriting skills), but this is definitely a fantastic album. This album is somewhere in the post punk revival theme with a strong dose of emocore(alright im getting silly). But seriously, the album lyrically deals alot with the disillusionment in american society and mass consumerism and conformity. how more post punk can you get than that. do what the tv says and buy the cd now!!
PJ Harvey - "Who the Fuck"
Cmon this is Patti Smith's evil twin born 23 years later. Harveys roots are in the punk scene and it breathes in the music she creates. Hands down the is the best singer songwriter in the last 10 years (after chan marshall) One of her more bluesy punkier songs from her last album here. buy it or die!!
The refused - "Summerholiday vs. punkrutine"
alright this is defintely more on the hardcore side of the spectrum (these guys are brutal). buts its nothing like youve ever heard before and it is punk...post..punk/hardcore. a great song from a record that gets regular rotation in my cd player. (these swedes musta toured with some norwegian black metal bands between there earlier stuff and this album.) buy this album if you want to really be a post-punk/hardcore junkie
..........
Alrighty the best for last
Fugazi - "instrument"
I cant say anything about these guys that hasnt already been said. I suggest everyone really check these guys out and their full discograghy. probably one of the most influential bands of the last 15 years.
definitely post punk revival post harcore whateverness. BUY THIS ALBUM SO I WILL SHUT UP
someone let me know if they have problems with links or downloads, this is my first post.
