Theme: Infidelity
So, most of the posts I've been noticing so far have been about people who've been cheated on. I think I'll bring something a little different. You see, I've been the 'other woman' in someone's life. It's not something I'm proud of, but I wouldn't go back and change it now for anything. There were lots of songs that I listened to during that period in my life and I give you a bunch that kinda stood out the minute I read this week's theme...
In the beginning, they tell you the prettiest things. That they'll take you away, that they'll leave their wife, that there's only you. This song came into my life at exactly the right time, and I listened to it endlessly, hoping that the day would come when he would come away with me. It's a sweetly quiet song, just Norah Jones' voice and a haunting piano, sometimes serious, and occasionally playful.
Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
Buy "Come Away With Me".
I know that the artists have said time and time again that the next song is not about cheating, but so many of the lines in it were said to me in that context that I can't help but think of it as such. Lines like "My girl's in the next room, sometimes I wish she was you", and "No, I don't think she has a clue." hit me hard the first time I heard it. Yeah, it's overplayed, but have it again. :)
Hinder - Lips Of An Angel
Buy "Extreme Behaviour"
This song kinda speaks for itself. Yeah, it's bad 80s rock. It's a hair band. But the lyrics are lovely. It's got a nice sentiment to it, and one that I could easily identify with.
Def Leppard - Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad
Buy "Vault: Def Leppard's Greatest Hits".
Finally, two songs from the aftermath. Let this be a lesson - infidelity never turns out well for anyone. The first is a sad song by The Wreckers. At first listen, it is a country/folk sounding song. But then you listen to the words, and the way they sing them.
"You're not sure if you love me,
and not sure enough to let me go,
baby it ain't fair you know,
to just keep me hanging 'round"
Just, yes.
The Wreckers - Leave The Pieces
Buy "Stand Still, Look Pretty".
The second is a lovely little piano piece by A Fine Frenzy. It's about the healing that comes after a breakup, particularly a nasty one. If anything, it doesn't fit in completely with the theme, but it is a song that helped after, and one that I still like to listen too now. Just a piano, and Alison Sudol's voice, clear and pure. Lovely.
A Fine Frenzy - Near To You
Buy "One Cell In The Sea" (I did. It's fantastic. The whole thing. :))
Finally, a bonus song! Just because of the title.
Dashboard Confessionals - Screaming Infidelities
I just couldn't leave it out. Dashboard Confessionals is just one of those bands you like, or you don't. I love them, my room-mate, not so much. As she called it, one guitar and a whole lot of whining. I prefer to call it 'acoustic'. :) It's quiet, melodic, a man relenting his lost love. Good stuff.
Buy "The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most".
