Theme: Keyboards
How about some synth New Wave?
Talking about music = dancing about architecture, but here goes:
Head Over Heels -- The Go-Go's. Bouncy tune from the '80s girl group, with those keyboard keys getting an extra workout. BUY
Golden Brown - The Stranglers. How many new wave songs have a harpischord-like intro? This song has recently popped up in ads for frozen french fries. *sighs* (m4a) BUY
Talk Talk - Talk Talk. A nice keyboard solo in the middle. One of the most underrated '80s bands, if you ask me. BUY
Pulling Mussels (From the Shell) - Squeeze. Keyboard solo from Jools Holland in this one. Simply one of their best songs. (m4a) BUY
Suburbia - The Pet Shop Boys. Bright, chic '80s dance pop with synth underpinning. (And why do I feel like I'm talking about a dress here?) BUY
Wishing - Flock of Seagulls. They're always called a one-hit wonder (for "I Ran") but wasn't this a hit too? At any rate, give it a listen. More classic '80s synth sound. (m4a) BUY
Shellshock - New Order. Who needs any other instruments besides keyboards? A few synthesized notes gradually build into their trademark layered studio sound. (m4a) BUY
Laughter and Forgetting -- David Sylvian. The haunting, unique voice of Japan (he's been compared to Nick Drake), with acoustic piano accompaniment. BUY
New Religion - Duran Duran. An almost gothic solo synth intro sets this apart from the more bubbly tracks on "Rio." BUY
Destination Unknown - Missing Persons. This is the classic new wave sound. A little ditzy, a little spacy, and all synth. BUY
Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode. An early, poppy highlight before they found their slower, darker groove. BUY
Don't You Want Me? - Human League. Classic layered New Wave synth sound for this tale of long gone wrong. BUY
Midnight - Yaz. Allison Moyet's amazing voice leads off the song and this could be almost be an R&B song from the '70s or a blues classic, but then those synth chords cut in and you know you're smack in the '80s.
Don't Go - Yaz. The line between new wave and disco was never thinner, but who's complaining? If this song doesn't make you want to get up and dance, there's no hope for you.
