For all you new people, we meet the third Saturday of every month starting at 4:30 and going 'til 11:00 or 12:00 midnight. Not everyone stays that late, of course, but there's always a group of us still hanging around. We bring food and drinks to share with everyone (IF you're able to...if not, please show up anyway, we'd rather have join us empty handed than not at all!) and we catch up on Doctor Who news, watch some awesome tellie, and hang out with each other. Very informal. :)

This time we have Turn Left and the 2-part finale, The Stolen Earth and Journey's End, to watch, plus the next serving in our Sylvester McCoy buffet, Battlefield. I think later on we're going to continue with the next episode or two of Quatermass, which is one of the shows that was a big influence on Doctor Who in its earlier years.

You can get directions to our meeting here: http://www.atlantagallifreyans.org/events.htm

Meetings are held at the Doraville Civic Center, very near the intersection of Buford Highway and I-285.

Jumpcon in Boston cancelled for this weekend

I think that most of the Doctor Who-related guests for the Boston Jumpcon, like Mary Tamm and John Levene, had already cancelled or been cancelled by the con, but getting the word out is important.

That's three Jumpcons cons in a row, cancelled. I can't imagine that any of the others will be a "go". Folks in Boston can go to Readercon this weekend, but it's a totally literary con, with no media guests. Can't say that I wasn't expecting this. Blast! Between this debacle and FedCon in Dallas, fans, especially those new to organized fandom, could be doubtful about other cons, and it could hurt long-established cons. :(

Total article about the cancellation is under the cut.

Found on the front page at <http://www.jumpcon.com/>

Message from Shane Concerning JumpCon Boston
Submitted by admin on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 12:36

Announcement to fans coming to JumpCon Boston:

I regret to announce the cancellation of our Boston event. Many
factors that needed to come together to make it happen simply did not.
We tried everything humanly possible and were unable to overcome the
insurmountable obstacles. This is not to say that I don't take the
blame myself, I do. I wanted to see this succeed so badly that I was
blinded to some warning signs that should have been obvious. If I have
learned anything through this process it's that running a convention
business is far more intricate and fraught with peril than it seemed
at the outset. I fully apologize to all the fans who've been
inconvenienced by this late announcement and assure them that we're in
the process of getting you all refunds. I know there are airfare and
other considerations for which you will be liable and for that I am
truly sorry. I wanted to let you know today rather than keep trying to
pull this off and end up like FedCon USA where the fans were already
in attendance. Please accept my humble apology, but I'll understand if
you can't.

To all the consultants and industry experts that were brought in to
help; I thank them and hold them blameless as they advised me and
tried to do what they could to help. They should not be held
accountable for my actions, they should be lauded for what they did
try to accomplish based on what they had to work with.

To all of the media guests that were to appear at our events; I want
to say - I am sorry that this has happened and has put some of you
into your own troubles by declining work, saying no to other
conventions, and other issues. My intentions were honorable and I
expected to be able to salvage things but at this point it seems I
cannot.

Sincerely,
Shane Senter

About a blue box that travels in time and space, a tall thin man with a shock of brown hair, the best witty bantering ever, monsters and villains straight out of fairy-tales. With his hand to hold, her dear friend tells her that she's brilliant. They visit strange people and stranger places, and all of it is vastly compelling and more real than the ordinary life she leads.

And then, in the morning, before she awakens, she forgets.

She does not remember, but she does dream.

I didn't like Donna in TRB at first. Although, I did like that she shouted at Ten and got him to stop. At the same time, I wasn't displeased that she didn't go on the TARDIS.

When the announcement came about CT returning as Donna for series/season four, I wasn't thrilled at all. But what the heck, we had to give her a chance. And by the end of PiC, I was very happy that Donna was going to travel with the Doctor after all. Throughout this series/season, she's been just what the Doctor needed. :)

I really don't want to see Donna go. And yet, as I have posted before, I'm very afraid for the character. *is trying to have a stiff upper lip, but failing miserably*

My apologies for doubting in you, Donna Noble, as a great character and better companion to Ten, and my thanks for making his and our world a better place.

(inspired by a post at doctorwho and my reply to it)

In IDW's "Doctor Who: The Forgotten," Lee decided to
take the alternate route and create all new adventures for the classic
Doctors. "Although it's always nice to revisit old friends," Lee told
CBR News, "I think we can give more 'forgotten tales' in these short
flashbacks. We have the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan meeting
Egyptians; we have the Second, Jamie and Zoe meeting space lizards;
the Third, Jo and The Brigadier (and pretty much most of the UNIT
regulars) defeating aliens on Dartmoor; the Fourth and Romana (two) in
millennium Paris; the Fifth, Tegan and Turlough facing a more recent
addition in a Village cricket match; the Sixth and Peri in a
courtroom; the Seventh and Ace in an alien war torn city; the Eighth
alone in a Count of Monte Cristo setting; and the Ninth and Rose in
the trenches of World War I. And every single one of them has been an
utter joy to write.

"Oh and of course we have the Tenth and Martha," Lee added, "in a
strange museum being hassled by gun happy waxworks, giant familiar
spiders, robots and a mysterious and familiar bearded man."

thoughts on the next doctor and his companions (wistful thinking)

I finally decided to put down in words my thoughts on what I would like the next Doctor to be like. And a little meta on new companions. This is pure and total fantasy here, but at the same time, some of the personality elements that I would like to see ought to be thought about when TPTB come to figure out what Eleven will be like. And certainly he should be ginger! :) No casting spoilers here, as I don't have a real person in mind. Not yet, at any rate. Under a cut, because it's a bit longish.

Oi! Don't get me wrong, I like David Tennant as Ten, but it is seemingly true that throughout the history of the show, when there are major changes in the production team, the actor playing the Doctor also moves on. At the end of 2010, David will have spent five years in the role, and if he's going to make the leap to Hollyweird-style stardom and leads in film, he needs to try for that (if he wants it) before he's too identified with the role of the Doctor (of course, it may be too late for that). Coming to the USA might help in that. T. Baker stayed seven years, and that might have been too long (or was it that JNT took over and things got strange). Jon Pertwee's five years looks to be about right (he himself gave the idea about the production team changing as his major reason for leaving, I believe I read somewhere again recently). Eccles didn't stay long enough at all, but one must wonder in what direction the show would have gone. Somehow or another, I can't see Nine in the same adventures that Ten had in his first season/series. I really don't think that Nine would have caused Torchwood to have come into existence, for example.

In the new series we've had smouldering and broken, but hiding the latter behind not talking about it at all. Then we had intense, talks a lot but doesn't say a lot until forced to, and still broken but hiding it behind wild grins.

For the next doctor, I would like not quiet intense, not loud intense, but normal intense. After Ten's gonzo take on Four, we need someone who can channel Five, but in a more positive fashion. A bit like Three's personality wouldn't be bad at all. We also need to see someone who is doing more healing after the Time War and everything that has happened since.

And some new and totally different companions. (Don't get me wrong, I love all the new companions so far!) Perhaps a twenty-something young man, looking for something else in his life. The cute young girl, if needed, could be his love interest. Or they could just be friends, no harm in that. One of them could be from the future or the past; one of them could be from a different planet. Certainly it would be nice if they weren't from modern-day London, right? How about a companion from one of the "colonies"? Not America or Australia, of course, but what about someone from Kenya or India or New Zealand or Canada? Or closer to home, from Ireland or Manx?

Here's what I would like Eleven to look like: curly ginger/red hair, somewhere in between Three and Four's wavy curls and Six's sometimes small and tight hair. Not cut in a fro, but as though he tries to tame it a little. Not lots of "product" though! Still tall, but a bit more stocky--needs good muscles for running, of course! Not rail-thin, but not pudgy either. Maybe with a forty-something look, an older look. And bright blue eyes that see everything. A beaky nose, of course. Sharp features, not round and soft. Someone who has been around the galaxies a time or too, and seen one end of time to the other--that's what we need to see in his face and in his eyes.

His personality should be not world-weary though, but still brightly curious about everything, but not so talkative about it. Informs his companions about what's going on and solicits their opinions; even if he always does what he wants, he's just a bit more polite about it. Still a brilliant scientist and historian, just doesn't boast about it unless someone challenges his knowledge. Still wouldn't put up with authority that's pushing itself about, just wouldn't make a big scene about it. He could still be witty and intelligently humorous, with the typical tendency to make jokes that go over most other characters' heads. He would still be a hero, and would know that he's the only one to save the day, he just wouldn't rub it in everyone's eye(s).

He would dress differently at times too; perhaps dress up for a night out (not a tux, mind you); perhaps he try and dress more in keeping with whatever historical periods he visits on Earth. Other times, he could hang out in casual clothes: nice jeans or trousers, comfortable shoes (really good trainers/sneakers), fun tee-shirts with the jeans or a casual shirt; a waistcoat/vest for layering; a jacket that's also comfortable but not a jean jacket--that would be too causal; and for the colder climes, a long but not too long blue scarf and maybe a nice fedora. (No cowboy hats or baseball caps, please!)

He wouldn't need glasses, and he would like horses more than dogs or cats. He would find Oxford a fascinating place to visit, and yet be ready to hop off to see a comet on a moment's notice. Perhaps a more human Doctor or at least more humane. And he could quote the Romantic poets at the drop of a hat and piffle on about Mozart, and wants to take his companion(s) to see Handel or the Beatles playing for royalty. And he would have a great affection for Tolkien's works and bore everyone stiff talking about hanging out with the Inklings at the Baby and the Bird. :) And he shouldn't sound as though he's from the North or London or Scotland. ;)

Next?

the world turned upside down: thoughts on "Turn Left" (spoilers)

I'll just say here in the non-spoiler space that Turn Left is one of the most amazing episodes of Doctor Who for its daring use of time and dimensional travel. I was so impressed by that. :) And just by the whole episode in general. :)

(As always, I wrote my thoughts down as soon as possible after seeing the episode, and without reading other reviews, but not without discussion with friends.)

Beware, there are spoilers below.

The first thing that was said at the ending when a group of us watched Turn Left last night was that this was Donna Noble's It's a Wonderful Life. Too right, that, but still all in all, this worked beautifully and quite plausibly. RTD is doing tremendous work here. Let's hope that he can hit a grand slam! (For non-baseball fans, that means a home-run with all three bases loaded--he got to first base with "Midnight" and second base with "Turn Left", so we must pray for that long ball out of the park, and that the last two episodes of this series/season will be just as good!)

So Donna's world has turned upside down, things are all wrong, not meant to be. That this Donna of the parallel world has to die in order to save the Donna of the proper time-line world was no surprise to me--sacrifices must be made. I'm reminded of Frodo's words to Sam at the end of The Return of the King where he explains that such must be made sometimes so that the others may live to enjoy their lives. It's not right or fair, but it is the way the world sometimes works.

1. Did anyone else note how selfish Donna was at first in the parallel world, and how self-centered and materialistic? It would seem that not only companions are good for the Doctor, the Doctor in turn is good for his companions.

2. Did the spaceship Titanic have nuclear-powered engines? That was certainly a mushroom cloud over London. Really, it's a wonder that WW 3 didn't start up.

3. There's been a few references to turning left in this season. They have been subtle, but they have been there. One example: in Midnight, the Exit signs all seemingly point to the left. I see these little hints to the audience, who already know the title of Turn Left as tiny clues, but for Donna, if she is aware of them in any fashion, they should act as subtle notes to the future. (I'm reminded of a certain TNG episode, where the Enterprise-D was caught in a time loop and keep being destroyed and yet going back to the reset point over and over again until the crew with Data's help figured how to send clues through the time loop to alert themselves to act differently and thus avert the calamity about to befall them.)

4. Catherine Tate proves that she can really act, and more importantly, react. She's so very good that she makes you totally believe that Donna is listening to and totally reacting to what the other characters, esp. Rose, say to her. Doctor Who, esp. in the new series, has had many marvelous actors of similar quality, but CT's portrayal of Donna Noble, in this episode, proves that she is as good, if not better, than most everyone else on the show. (I will leave DT's Ten out of this reckoning, and Eccles' Nine as well, however.)

5. Although it seemed as though Billie Piper was trying to find Rose's "voice" again, at the same time, it's been years since we saw either Billie or Rose on the show. There's also a comment by Pete Tyler in Doomsday to the effect that his world moves a little bit faster in time than the earth of the Doctor's main time-line, so it has been longer for this Earth, and thus Rose. Rose has been there for a few years, and she's aged some, certainly grown-up a lot, probably been working for Torchwood, doing some training, and perhaps even taking some university course of study. Not to mention the fact that it has been almost two years since Billie worked on the show on a regular basis, and her life has changed her and of course aged her a bit physically. It really does show in her face, or else that's wonderful make-up. There's also the fact that she has been working at her craft a lot, and it shows in her here-and-now portrayal of Rose. This is a Rose who has probably gone through some depression over losing the Doctor and had to make a new life for herself in a world not her own. Whether or not one ships the Doctor and Rose, the fact remains that they were companions and friends, and were torn away from each other under horrible and tragic circumstances. Most any other living companion could perhaps think that they might see the Doctor again one day--of course there are exceptions--but Rose was stuck in a parallel world that the Doctor could not travel to without supposedly destroying all of space and time. That last bit of course beggars the idea of how Rose has now traveled from Pete's World to her former earth without destroying space and time. Very good question, I must say!

6. Donna's abject terror over the time bug on her back is palpably felt. Those around her who were psychic enough to see/sense the thing on her back had me totally convinced that there was something there! The time bug (I shudder to even think of it) had this old skool fan remembering the spider on SJS's back in Planet of the Spiders. From the wiki entry on Turn Left, this was a deliberate reference.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_Left_(Doctor_Who)

7. I liked the non-gratuitous use of other people and actors from previous episodes. For example, Chipo Chung, who plays the fortune-teller, previously appeared as Chantho in the episode "Utopia". This use of other actors and characters provides continuity and a sense of balance, as well as the feeling that all this is real.

8. Once again, good use of the Cloister Bell. However, I didn't like the fact that the interior of the TARDIS was red, as that seemed a bit needlessly overkill, unless we are to remember that it had this red tint once the Master turned it into the Paradox Machine at the end of last series. (Still not sure Jack machine-gunned the Paradox Machine to 'death', and yet did not harm the TARDIS.) It was certainly over-kill to have the words Bad Wolf everywhere, though.

9. Donna is truly noble, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. She is not perfect, and is not the definition of her last name all the time. However, she has a good sense of self, and strong will-power. From dictionary.com for noble:

of an exalted moral or mental character or excellence; lofty: a noble thought.
admirable in dignity of conception, manner of expression, execution, or composition: a noble poem.
very impressive or imposing in appearance; stately; magnificent: a noble monument.
of an admirably high quality; notably superior; excellent

—Synonyms 3. highborn, aristocratic. 4. honorable. Noble, high-minded, magnanimous agree in referring to lofty principles and loftiness of mind or spirit. Noble implies a loftiness of character or spirit that scorns the petty, mean, base, or dishonorable: a noble deed. High-minded implies having elevated principles and consistently adhering to them: a high-minded pursuit of legal reforms. Magnanimous suggests greatness of mind or soul, esp. as manifested in generosity or in overlooking injuries: magnanimous toward his former enemies. 6. grand, lordly, splendid. 11. peer, aristocrat.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/noble

10. Seeing more of Gramps and Sylvia under conditions both positive and adverse only made me love Gramps more, and have a better understanding of Sylvia. I may not like her, but I have more sympathy for her than I did before now. I adored the fact that Gramps took his telescope with him everywhere, even and especially on holiday.

11. Along with Gramps, I knew what the labour camps were right away. To see such in the UK after the Holocaust was very chilling. Gramps lived through those times, may have even served in WW 2, and certainly knew of the Nuremberg trials, and the horrors that emerged from those trials, not to mention all the stories from the Allied soldiers who liberated the "camps". That DW started in the early 60s, less than two decades from the ending of the war--well, one can certainly understand that the war years had a great deal of influence on the show. Terry Nation did talk about how the Daleks were created to invoke the hatred of Fascism and Nazism, and certainly they still do that to this very day. To see Britain turning in that direction in this episode was even more horrifying in the light of all that history. (Some of this I had already thought about, and some of this came from talking to a friend who grew up in the UK during the 60s.)

12. Last but not least, I cannot wait until next week, and the week thereafter. The suspense is tremendous.

I just wanted to remind everyone in the metro (and beyond) Atlanta area that the next meeting of the Atlanta Gallifreyans (Atlanta's own Doctor Who club) is tomorrow, Saturday June the 21st, starting at 4:30 PM at the Doraville Civic Center. (The civic center is within walking distance of the Doraville Marta station, and is a block or so away from the Buford Hiway and I-285 intersection. Directions at the AG site, below.)

Please bring one of the following: food or drink or plate and napkins and plastic cutlery with which to share with all, if you can. :)

We will be watching the last part of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (time constraints kept us from watching all the way to to the end last month, alas). We're in the middle of watching a Seventh Doctor episode per meeting. Next up is Battlefield. We should be finished with McCoy by October at the latest, which means that we will be returning to the Third Doctor with The Three Doctors, just in time for the show's anniversary month in November! :)

The Tenth Doctor episodes that we should be watching include Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead, and Midnight. If we are lucky, we will also be watching Turn Left! We are skipping The Wasp and the Unicorn for now, since it was just shown on the Sci-Fi Channel, so most everyone has had a chance to see it hopefully.

The site for the club is here:
http://www.atlantagallifreyans.org/
Directions are on the site.
Any further questions about the meeting, please ask here. :)

Murray Gold's re-use of music in Doctor Who

Was just wondering about the re-use of Murray Gold's music in Doctor Who. Sssshhhh, mild spoilers for AoG & DD, but strong spoilers for The Doctor's Daughter, Silence in the Library, and The Forest of the Dead.

The other day I rewatched Army of Ghosts and Doomsday. I was curious about the music, especially the tragic themes that are used in both episodes.

I do have a question and was wondering if anyone else noticed. Was music from AoG and DD used in The Doctor's Daughter and the recent Moffat two-parter about River Song? I'm speaking specifically of the sad music that we hear at Jenny's funeral and River Song's death--was this not the same music that we hear over the beach scenes in AoG/DD and also at the end of the scene where Rose and the Doctor have been separated by the closing of the Void and yet are standing at the same wall, albeit in different universes? Or is it just similar? Murray Gold has to write so much music for the show that I figured that he would not be adverse to re-using themes again and again. For example, when Ten and Donna decide to run back up the Library steps near the beginning of Silence in the Library the music that underscores those few moments is rather obviously from Partners in Crime.

In fact, if anyone can think of any other re-use of Murray Gold's music throughout the show, please mention it.

good wig shop in the northern part of Atlanta?

I'm looking for recommendations for a good wig shop in the metro area, preferably on the north side of town, but can go most anywhere, if the shop has what I want. To be specific, I need a blonde wig, hitting about the shoulder blades. Colouring should be very light, but not platinum. I don't want it to be heavy, as I will have to wear it for a whole day. I will also need to put it into two loose braids. My icon gives an idea of what I'm looking for. And I don't want to spend too much on it, but decent quality is a must. I need it by this Friday at the latest.

Any suggestions for a good shop would be appreciated. :)

Yes, I want to cosplay as Rose again. :)

For those of you attending TimeGate this year, as I have mentioned before, we are having a Costume Contest.
That event takes place at 10 PM on Sunday night. Sign-up sheets should be at Registration.

There's also the Costume Panel, and that's happening at 8:30 PM on Friday night. I would love to have as many Doctor Who cosplayers as possible in the audience, so that I can point to each one and ask them to stand up and model their outfit, and maybe even tell a little bit about it, if it was made for or by them, or if it was purchased ready-made (i.e. not made specially as Doctor Who garb, but that it was put together to make a Doctor Who cosplay outfit). Such a little talk must be brief, under a minute if at all possible.

Please email me off the community to let me know me that you're interested and which Doctor/Companion/Monster/Villain/Guest Star/Other that you cosplay, and that way I will know about how many DW cosplayers I can expect for our costuming panel at TimeGate. You can email me at acciochocolate at livejournal dot com .
Thanks! :)

For more info on TimeGate, Atlanta's Doctor Who and Stargate convention, please go here:

http://www.timegatecon.org/

worried about Donna

I'm a bit worried about Donna, because of a few lines at the end of The Doctor's Daughter .

More under the cut. Mild spoilers for The Doctor's Daughter, The Sontaran Stratagem, Army of Ghosts, School Reunion, and Doomsday.

Back on April 20th of this year I wrote a long essay on some comparisons between Season Four and previous seasons, mostly of Ten's era. This is a brief continuation of that meta. At the moment I'm a little worried about Donna, simply because of her conversation with Martha at the end of The Doctor's Daughter. Martha's once again trying to warn Donna about traveling with the Doctor, just as she did in the beginning of The Sontaran Stratagem, and Donna's not really paying any attention, or at the least, isn't concerned. In fact, she tells Martha that she's gonna travel with the bloke forever. Had I been a cat, my ears would have pricked up at this, as it somewhat parallels the exchange between Ten and Rose at the beginning of Army of Ghosts :

Ten: "How long are you going to stay with me?"

Rose: "Forever."

Rose is smiling in pure happiness, but the look on Ten's face is a bit ambiguous. He wants her to stay as long as she likes, as long as she can, but he knows that it can't last forever. He knows that she knows this too, after their little talk outside the coffee shop in School Reunion.

Yeah, I'm worried about Donna now. Especially after what happened to Rose.

The internal problem got fixed earlier this past week, but we were still having trouble with on-line registration. Thanks to the assistance of Lukas at HI, that problem has now been solved as well. So on-line registrations are working again! Which means that if you haven't booked your hotel room yet and still want to, you have until Tuesday, May 6 to do so, and you can either call the hotel or book on-line. Rooms are only $69 a night. Remember that the con runs from Friday, May 23rd to Monday, May 26th, 2008, at the Holiday Inn Select in Atlanta, GA.

Reservations can be done here: http://timegatecon.org/hotel.htm
