| | optimistic | ] | A lot has been discussed about the best way to get to the convention. Yes, it's true that websites like orbitz.com, expedia.com, travelocity.com, and especially priceline.com do work well to find and hunt around for cheap travel. BUT, let's just start from the beginning, shall we?
LOCAL AND OTHER AREA AIRPORTS
Atlantic City, NJ is located near the bottom tip of New Jersey (yes for those of you not from the East Coast, NJ has a little wang hanging off into the ocean...AC is on the top of the shaft...) very near Delaware and Philadelphia, PA and about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive from New York City.
There are several airports that provide great options for transport to Atlantic City:
ACY: Atlantic City International Airport is located minutes away from Atlantic City. However, there are few flights that go directly to this airport, and they run a bit higher in cost than other area airports. Take in to account the extra cost of your flight into AIY, and the money you might have to spend on a cab, bus, or train ride into Atlantic City proper, and in the end it may be worth a little extra cost! The Atlantic City Website has great tips on transport from the airport. NOTE: an earlier typo in the airport abbreviation (the link was always correct) would have listed Bader Field as the airport, a private municipal airport. You can land your private jet there if you want, and if you do, will you marry me? Atlantic City Airport is certainly not walking distance, but a lot closer than the others!
PHL: Philadelphia International Airport is located about an hour away from Atlantic City. Check out their website, as well as the Atlantic City website for options on ground transport. There are regular busses, as well as trains that go into the city. However, a ride share might be an option with other convention goers, since so many connecting flights from California and the Midwest go through the same Cities =)
EWR: Newark, NJ International Airport. This airport by far has the most flights from across the U.S. to NJ. However, it's about a two hour car ride. If you'd like to share a cab with some other folks, it could become affordable. Always negotiate with the cab driver beforehand, or book a car service ahead of time with a flat rate. Many bus lines featured on the Newark Airport website provide bus service to Atlantic City. New Jersey Transit provides Rail Service from Newark Airport as well. It's very comfortable and you'll get to see scenic New Jersey =)
And finally...
ILG: New Castle County Airport, Delaware is about 90 minutes away. I don't know much about this airport, but it's yet another option and maybe some of our Delaware friends can give you some tips about travel from there!
LGA, JFK and other NYC airports take quite a bit more planning, but check out the website for the Port Authority of NY/NJ to read more about ground transport from those airports to Atlantic City. There are many, many options, they are just a bit longer and might be more complicated (OR I could be totally wrong, it happens! Let us know if you dig up a great deal!)
NOTE: Many folks from the New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and East Coast states in general will be driving to Atlantic City. SO, if you have friends from around here, definitely mooch and beg for rides *wink*.

Wow, this is like an essay. Jeeez, are you bored from reading this? I hope not, it's really informative and I haven't spent this much time writing something in, like, 10 years. Seriously! I never did homework in college or high school. I guess it was a cry for attention really....wait...oh right I was writing about travel...

TIPS FOR FINDING CHEAP-O TRAVEL ONLINE!
I book travel quite a bit for work, and yes of course leisure trips. One of my favorite features of the travel websites is orbitz.com's Deal Detector. You can enter your destination, and the price you'd like to pay. They will email you when they find a matching flight for that price.
expedia.com has a similar service, and so does travelocity.com, but I usually have better luck with Orbitz (brand loyal, what can I say?)
Priceline.com is not a place that I have used for the "Name your own price" feature. Now, I have used it for rental cars, and got rental cars for as cheap as $8 per day in Chicago (!) from Hertz, so I do love their service! However with flights, there needs to be some flexibility. They don't tell you the time you are leaving ahead of time, and you may end up with a wait in another city, and may not know your airline. BUT, you may end up with a super cheap flight cross country, so if it's totally worth the gamble let us all know!
Kayak.com: I have heard great things about, but have no experience with. Let us know if you have any tips for that site!
RENTAL CARS
As I said above, I find Priceline.com's "Name Your Own Price" to have GREAT deals on rental cars! Do a quick search on Orbitz.com and find out how much a rental car would cost for the dates you will be in Atlantic City, and from the airport you will be flying into. Then go to priceline and enter a price at least half that (or gamble and go lower!!) You have to back out and change your options if they turn down your first offer. You can change things such as the pickup/dropoff time, and the type of car, and then try a slightly higher price. It's totally worth the time to get a cheap car!
NOTE: Rental cars are not necessary for Atlantic City. If you check out a map, all of the major attractions are within walking distance, located on the Boardwalk. We are planning all convention events to be attached to the Boardwalk, and the beach. The only reason to rent a car would be for ease of transport from the airport if you are travelling with a group, or if you are planning on sight seeing in other locations like Historic Delaware, Philadelphia, or New York City.
AND FINALLY
Now that you are an expert at finding cheap and easy (hot!) online travel, please share with us if you've found any awesome deals or other ways to book that we aren't aware of.
Amtrak has trains directly into Atlantic City from, well, everywhere!
The websites above DO NOT INCLUDE the following two airlines, so check out those sites directly for some more possible great deals:
USA 3000: Goes directly into Philly, and sounds like a futuristic Sci-Fi movie where robots own people and Sylvester Stallone has to protect the president from a hand grenade...
Spirit Airlines: Flies directly into Atlantic City, definitely worthwhile to check out for anyone not traveling in a group that can't diffuse the cost of a rental car/taxi from the other airports.
SOOOO that's all of the info I had stored in my brain (literally) about travel. Feel free to ask questions and make sure to go turn on your deal detectors! Keep an eye on travel for the next few weeks, prices will come down again once the whole American Airlines thing blows over (Poor ATA, no one even noticed they went out of business earlier this month!)
Good luck! |
