Coyotes
If you do not know Coyotes have been thriving in GA. Just on the news. Coyote caught off Briarcliff Rd. They also found a den. Here are some FACTS about coyotes.
So how about that? Coyotes in GA.

I knew that last year when I saw one casually strolling on North Point Parkway.

where my Mom saw one. I laughed at her. Since they are not native. It is all because the Red Wolf was hunted to extinction. It seems the red wolf could beat the coyotes ass. Anyway.

I saw two coyotes walking beside COBB PARKWAY on New Years Eve. I stopped because I thought they were dogs, and it was quite a surprise when they weren't. Someone told me that they have been coming down in the dried up river beds from North Georgia.

You betcha we have coyotes in Georgia, and in Metro. Very adaptable, very shy. Want a few?

I hear them regularly here (west Atlanta metro), and on very rare occasions have seen them as they trot through our property. Every couple of years there'll be one road-killed, but they're generally savvy enough to zoom out of the road when they hear cars approach.

I see coyotes here in Roswell/Alpharetta somewhat regularly.

Saw one in my neighborhood (just outside of Fayetteville) when I had my dog outside on the leash. Heard her bark change, peeked outside, and saw it padding along the road, towards our house. Needless to say, I brought my dog inside. She'd be stupid enough to tangle with it. x.x

i'm from Fayetteville, and my parents still live there. they were warning them on the news LAST year about coyotes and the dangers to outside dogs. their outside dogs would want to tangle with them too. :)

I heard there were a couple trapped in Buckhead last year. I also heard tale (not in GA) of a Jack Russel terrier getting snatched by one right in front of the owners as they were coming home from a walk. In their own yard.

So yeah, pay attention to coyote warnings. *nervous*

Yes, it is really important for pet owners to be aware, especially if they have smaller dogs who are left outside alone for long periods of time. Even in enclosed spaces.

Yeah, but that was the freaky thing: The owners of the terrier were right there. From the sidewalk to the house, they usually let the little one off his leash and he'd bolt to the door. The coyote snatched him up right there. Must have been starving beyond reason, but still.

I'd be more concerned about rabies in an animal that comes right up to where people are to snatch up dinner.
Crazy stuff...

My hubby saw one in our backyard (Acworth) not long ago. Now we always have to make sure our kitty is in at night.

I've been aware of the growing coyote problem in GA for a while now. What really freaked me out is when I saw a dead armadillo on the side of the road in Athens!

saw one (also deceased) on the side of the road in Augusta...kind of bizarre.

Since then, though, I've seen a live one on 78 (edit: WHILE) driving toward Augusta.

As to the coyotes, though, I still get people who tell me I'm making it up when I try to explain that yes, they really are here now.

(Edite because I just realized that I had written about a driving armadillo.)

The weird thing is, I never saw many armadillo roadkill until I came to Georgia... from Texas. WTF. O.o;

(Thank goodness we don't have skunk roadkill so much, here. BLARGH...!)

that's so odd!! Granted, I'm from valdosta... but I've seen far too many dead armadillo. I'd chase them at night for the fun of it sometimes back in the day... what else is there to do in S. Ga?

This is old news and yet another reason why pet owners should keep their animals indoors or fenced in.

till about last year. Because they are feral to Georgia. But I agree with you. Another but. The coyote on the news got under the fence. From what I understood-of course that will probably be changed as I type it.

Well I'm here in North Georgia and it's not much of a surprise. I saw one running around in my neighborhood just last night as I was going back to work during my lunch hour.

I hope this doesn't start a whole huge panic. Yeah, coyotes are dangerous but so is every other wild animal. So are us humans. But you don't see us hunting humans because ourr population is getting out of control...

Coyotes are NOT native to Georgia. The reason we have them-the decimation of the Red Wolf. Coyotes caught in Georgia are euthanized. So we as humans fucked up the natural order by killing off the red wolf.

Well, since the extinction of the red wolf the coyote has now become native to Georgia. Adaptation is a wonderful thing. This should mean they shouldn't just be killed without a thought. They DO, like all other wildlife, serve a purpose in keeping the natural balance.

Slaughtering animals that aren't "native" to an area is silly. That's like saying we should slaughter all horses in the US. They're not native to this country, not at all. :)

Coyotes aren't native to Georgia and can't become native. That's like someone saying they're a Georgia native because they've lived here a long time, even though they were born in California.

(Note: not saying it's OK to kill coyotes just because they're not native.)

That is all I am saying. It is also making it difficult to reintroduce the Red Wolf which is native to Georgia since they can not share the same habitat. I don't like killing of anything but a wild animal off Briarcliff eating a dog pretty much shows there is no food for it. So killed by car or starvation or humanely euthanized. I do not like animal suffering. :/
One of those lesser evil things.

Most people these days tend to not let their dogs run around loose because of leash laws, but cats are frequently an entirely different story. Please keep your cats inside, or in a protected area. We got one of these for our cats, and a few tweaks aside it's been fabulous. The cats adore it, it keeps them [somewhat] out of our hair, and most important of all, they are able to enjoy some of the outdoors in safety.

That's really cool. If my cat didn't run away when I simply open an outside door I'd look into getting something like that. But as it is, he's a coward. The mos he'll go outside is the back porch for a few minutes then right back under whatever couch or bed he usually hides under during daytime.

The coyote population in the ridges above Chattanooga has grown tremendously in recent years. All the building into their habitats is pushing them into regular neighborhoods.

their habitat. It is the habitat of the Red Wolf that we already pushed to the brink of extinction. The Red Wolf is the coyotes enemy. The coyote has no habitat they can adapt to any environment. Unlike the black bear, the deer, the rabbit, the turtles, and all the other animals habitat builders are destroying. As the build up the 400 corridor into what should be protected wetlands. :)
