Scientology protest = riot police?
Yesterday, there were world wide organized mass protests against the Church of Scientology including one in Dunwoody.

The reason I bring this up I found the police presence interesting.

Putting aside the reasons for protesting, is 10 - 20 riot cops and a police helicopter circling for several hours the standard reaction to a protest that had 50 - 100 people (depending on who you ask)?

Do you mind if I forward your link to my Dekalb County commissioner ? Those are Dekalb County Police and he keeps complaining that the county does not have enough police officers.

The county does not. Listen to a scanner some time and add up how many officers are on duty in a given night.

I know that the protesters went ahead and let the cops know about their presence a few weeks before the event- I am not at all sure why there was a helicopter.

Excessive force would be going across the street and assaulting the protesters OR beating up a protester that stepped onto the private property or tried to end run around the police line.

I don't know that I should expect the anti-scientologists to behave badly, it still does, given the scope and perhaps the complaints that the scientologists are likely to put to the cops show as a measured and restrained response. No thumping of heads, the antis got their say and everyone was happy in their rights to protest and wor$hip as they please.

I count 30 cops or so, plus 2 in the chopper and probably another few around the corner or inside. They probably thought there was going to be more protesters. I'd not put it past the Scientologist to exaggerate the scope of the protest.

This is the SOUTH. You get fifty to a hundred people in masks parading around in front of ANY kind of church, the police tend to get nervous.

Then again, Scientologists have enough money they could pay for the extra security. Then again again, maybe the protesters paid for it all - it takes a lot to hold back that Tom Cruise when he gets on a roll.

I was actually thinking that the Co$ probably paid for extra security myself. They have LOTS o' cash. Just made a $5mil cash deal for a building in Portland. I wish I could reach the top of that pyramid scheme.

i'm a member of anonymous, and i can assure you that anonymous did not pay for it, and it was most certainly scientology behind that, they also arrested 2 peaceful protesters for using a megaphone, and ticketed any car that honked at them. it was most definatly bullshit

This story's about last month. This time they couldn't say they didn't know what to expect. I think they outnumbered the protesters this time.
