99Xtinction
It's sad to admit, but I've historically been pretty lazy when it comes to finding new music.  And even though 99X has been making steadily decreasing additions to my playlist, it's going to hurt seeing it go.  I won't be following the station as it makes its move to online-only and pretends to invent this 'new' thing called "visual radio," for a few different reasons.  For one, I don't spend much time watching the internet, aside from an occasional YouTube video.  I prefer to read it or write on it.  Then there's the fact that 99% of my radio listening is done in the car, and, well, I don't have the internet in the car.  And I really have no idea how much time and money Cumulus is going to commit to the success of the station now that it's off the air, so there's no point in getting involved in something that may fade away soon anyway.

On November 16, 2006, Atlanta had TWO Alternative stations.  After this weekend, we may have none.  A lot of the commentary over at 99X Watch seems to cite failings that are common to the Alternative format in general, and not just 99X.  One such bugbear is the fact that the format continues to have Grunge as its cornerstone, a genre of music that unfortunately lost nearly all its steam after the suicide of Kurt Cobain in 1994.  The other big factor is new technology.  The generation carrying on the mantle of alternative music listener is more likely to avoid "terrestrial" radio and opt for satellite radio or their own iPods.

All of this of course leaves me without a source of new music.  I usually need to hear a song a few times before deciding if I like it or not, which made radio a great way to discover new stuff.  That option is not going to work for me as well anymore.  Project 9-6-1 is an Active Rock station that plays too much old crappy Butt Rock mixed in along with "sellout" bands like Alterbridge and Nickelback that one must endure while waiting around for the good Alternative and Heavy bands like Modest Mouse and System of a Down.  88.5, the GSU radio station, plays too much ambient and avant-garde crap for my preference.  Most of the time I find it annoying to listen to for too long, aside from Nippon Music Champ.  That leaves Dave FM, which will lure me into a false sense of security by playing great old Alternative songs I haven't heard in years and then shock the conscience by playing something like Billy Joel.

In a desperate search for an alternative... er... Alternative, I found a college radio station in Rochester, NY that broadcasts online.  WBER's playlist looks like exactly what I'm looking for - some of the best stuff from the 99X playlist combined with a lot of new music I've been desperately needing exposure to.  Unfortunately I'll only be able to listen when I'm near a computer, but it's better than nothing, and I won't be tied to watching the screen.

Not to toot my own horn, but may I suggest checking out Georgia Tech's Student Radio Rock, Rhythm, & Roll soundblock on WREK 91.1 FM Monday-Friday 2pm-6pm (sometimes 7pm), or online at wrek.org.

I *do* like both wrek and 88.5, though.

WBER is my old hometown station! I grew up listening to WBER - I was totally spolied.

I LOVELOVELOVE WBER - it's not college radio like WRAX or anything. WBER is not a college station, it's a BOCES program for people to learn how to be on the radio. More like WABE that anything else, it's listener-supported.

They play Alternative Music, everything from NIN to Tori Amos to Tegan and Sarah and Rilo Kiley.

Love it - I listen ALL DAY at work. There are pretty much no commercials. Be careful tho, between 2-4 they turn it over to the local High Schools so there's some crappy music in the afternoon.

9AM there's New Wave Wednesdays (which is awesome) hosted by Jennifer V - the heritage program director of WBER, And Friday mornings Joey does a morning show - it's lame and Rochester focused so I tend not to listen to that much.

Also, check out their Top 100 songs of the year for ideas for new music.

yay for WBER! They used to have free shows back in the day; I remember waiting outside in the cold to see Goldfinger for free :P That and Nada Surf, remember them? :D

I echo your thoughts.

If you want more internet options.

Search for WFNX 101.7 www.fnxradio.com (I think, I can't stream at work, and I've got it book marked at home). It's a Boston station that I've listened to since they went on the air in 1983.

woxy.com has been rocking my world for years now.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than 99X ever could be.

They had kind of the same story - they were on the dial then went to internet only, went off the air twice, firgured out a working model, and now are back to internet and HD radio in Cincinnati.

i can't say enough things about the guys over there other than they introduced me to some amazing amazing bands that have changed my life.

WOXY in Cincinnati has a very similar format to 99x or at least the 99x I remember from the 90s. They closed down ... last year? the year before? but they broadcast online: http://woxy.lala.com/

You will also recognize them from the movie Rainman - when Dustin Hoffman repeats "BAM! The future of rock and roll!" over and over, that's their slogan.

Have you tried Pandora? The idea is that you create your own "stations" by seeding them with a song or band that you like, and then it plays other songs that are similar. You can give each track a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" as it goes by if you want to focus in on a particular sound, or you can just sit back and let it go.

I don't use it for grunge or alternative, so I can't say how good it is for that sort of thing, but it's just about my favorite way to find new music in the genres I do like (and their library is surprisingly large).

I second this. You can also click on the current (and last few) track's artist, album, or song name and go to a page with more information and links to buy on amazon or itunes.

They've been working on the machinery behind pandora as a research project for several years now, so it's a really intelligent system. I decided to sign up for a paid account to support them (there are visual ads for free accounts).

Or for a more straight ahead approach, slacker.com which has over 100 different genre stations including several different flavours of alternative. It's fantastic in that they offer a portable device that you can download your favourite stations to so that you can take them with you to listen a la ipod.

A friend of mine has been using Pandora a good bit. I tried out Yahoo Music's player a while back which operates on a similar (and probably stolen) system, and it's definitely an option to consider.

When was the last time a DJ just played music and didn't use airtime as their personal soapbox? I don't want to hear what you did this weekend, I don't want to hear your political commentary, I don't want to hear your poor attempts at trying to be witty. Just play the damn music.

Hence, INTERNET radio. The song title and artist DISPLAY ON YOUR SCREEN. You don't need a DJ.

Duh.

Many of the XM stations do not have DJs, and of those that do, its only part of the time and the chatter is minimal. Plus no commercials. ;)

I couldn't have stated my general feeling about the whole situation better if I had said it myself. I am not one for conspiracies, but had a thought on the whole "move to the internet" business.

I think it is a PR move: that way they didn't technically "kill" 99X - they just "moved" it, and when everyone stops listening to it on the internet, then it can just die off peacefully w/ no fanfare 6-12 mos from now, and if it is lucky, it might get a footnote in Rodney's column..

Exactly. They're slowly pulling the rug out from under us, giving us an opportunity to step off, rather than just letting us fall on our asses. But they're still doing it.

This is the same thing that has happened to a few different Alternative stations lately, including 96 Wave in Charleston.

Another radio station you can stream that comes out of Philly.

They also have a sister station on the same site-- go to Y rock on XPN. I listen to these both at work all the time.

Also, I agree with Pandora. It's good for when you want something new with a certain sound.

I understand your position on 88.5 but I'd like to assert that the DJ's always list what was played, the ads aren't obnoxious and you can win tickets to cool shows. I am always discovering new bands through 88.5 and I don't know what I'd do without them. *hugs 88.5*

Pandora is awesome but not in your car. Also, not really the best for stretching your musical palette. :D

I'm giving 88.5 a second chance. I think most of the weird non-music I've been hearing has been on the specialty shows, and it seems like regular rotation is a little better.

Unfortunately it suffers from one of the main drawbacks of college radio - announcers who are entirely too laid back, reciting PSAs and school related stuff for 10 minutes after every 5 songs. :-)

My favorite alt station is the one that I grew up listening to back in Utah, X96. They stream at http://www.x96.com. The morning show probably won't appeal to most people around here (since a lot of it is Utah-centric), but the music is top-notch.

Thankfully I stopped listening to Atlanta radio years ago when I got my mobile XM radio.

At work I listen to 88.5 because, you have to admit, they don't play the same song every two or three hours. When was the last time you listened to 88.5 and knew one of the songs? :D There are some good points in listening to them because they play such off the wall shit that my boss can't stand it and it keeps him away from me.
Once they start jacking at the jaws though I flip the station to 91.1 or even 90.1 since I also love classical music.

It seems Atlanta radio has to redefine itself every month. I used to enjoy listening to 105.3 and the thing was, since I live half way between Macon and Atlanta I could get both of those channels just by moving the dial slightly. I can't even remember what radio station that was on 105.3 before it changed formats a million times.
