Jack Kingston - Oh, what the voters have given us...

A friend sent this along and I wanted to pass it on to you folks. Here are a few things to think about and be aware of when you go to campaign for someone or cast your vote. The Repub talked about below is from GEORGIA. Oy!

The below is all quoted:

From Open Thread (http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/01/11/open-thread-367/) by Nicole Belle:

Keith Olbermann scooped me on this only because his broadcast is before we put up the Open Thread, but I thought that this little nugget of hypocrisy was worth a laugh or two.

As promised in the First 100 hours of the Democratic-controlled Congress, they have approved a raise in the minimum wage. Jack Kingston (R-GA), however, didn't have anything positive to say:

During the House debate, Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., said Democrats would celebrate the bill's passage because "it's going to be good politics for them."

But he warned that people would not escape poverty through mandated wage hikes. If, instead, people would marry and work longer hours, "they would be out of poverty," he said. "It is an economic fact."

Funnily enough, in every economics class I've ever taken (and there have been quite a few), this "fact" has never been presented as a way to escape poverty.

But the thing that is so ironic is that this is the same Jack Kingston who, upon learning that the Democratic majority planned on Congress working five days a week, rather than his party's 2 1/2, had this to say:

"Keeping us up here eats away at families," said Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.), who typically flies home on Thursdays and returns to Washington on Tuesdays. "Marriages suffer. The Democrats could care less about families - that's what this says."

 Um, yeah.

Cheap Dentistry?

Hi there, just joined here so I hope this is the kind of post that's ok.

Does anyone know of an inexpensive dental clinic, or dental college that takes patients? I'm from NYC, and I know large dentistry schools like the one at NYU takes patients.

I'd love to find one in the North Atlanta area (I'm in Roswell), and one that has some experience with cosmetic dentistry...I have a cavity developing in my front tooth! Gross!  I don't have insurance, or the budget to spend a bazillion dollars getting it fixed.

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

wtf?

Anyone noticed this yet? This makes NO sense to me.

http://www.boingboing.net/2007/01/12/tsa_screens_atlaanta.html

The TSA has a new, bizarre rule for international passengers arriving in Atlanta: once you get off the plane, you have to be screened for metal before you leave the airport:

Let's say you live in Atlanta and you've just come in from Frankfurt, Germany. You're not connecting, you're headed for the parking lot or the taxi stand or the MARTA station. Well, sorry, pal, first you have to stand in line, take off your coat and shoes, remove your computer, hand over your liquids and gels, and have your bags X-rayed. Mind you, this is the world's busiest airport in passengers (about 86 million annually). On a recent afternoon in the arrivals hall, the checkpoint line was half an hour long. Not only is the procedure inconvenient, it's bad for business, as people making tight connections are trapped in a queue behind those merely trying to leave the building.

Alcohol Sales on Sunday in Georgia...your thoughts...

I posted this response to --) THIS POST (-- in [info]atlanta_ga about the new bill on Alcohol sales in Georgia...

What people don't realize is that this is a trick by the Christains. If you approve of this bill, you only get to purchase beer or wine, if you don't
approve of this bill, they say you don't want alcahol sales on sunday...it's a Catch-22.

It has been my experience that beer drinkers are the ones who cause most of the Drinking/Driving/Bar fight problems in the first
place.

As a Liquor drinker, I want to support Alcohol sales on Sundays, but I don't want to support a bill that excludes Liquor...

...and of course, it got me thinking. How many of you would support this bill as is (excluding liquor)?
How many of you would support this bill if it included liquor?
Would you vote "no" on this bill risking not having the chance to have a bill for alcohol sales on Sunday for at least a few more years?...

This will never work

Totally random, not sure if this is even allowed. But anyone interested in going to watch Curse of the Golden Flower at 10pm at the AMC on Lawrenceville-Suwanee? Didn't feel like going by myself, plus see if I could meet some new people.

Tax Dollars paying for single religion class

I dont know about you, but if someone wants to teach religious courses to teenagers and MY money is paying for it, it will be comparative religion. I will be sending some disgruntled emails, and included email info below....

Courses on Bible up for vote

State Board of Education members are expected to give preliminary approval to new academic courses on the Bible, allowing Georgia's public high schools for the first time to offer taxpayer-funded classes devoted to the "Good Book."

Officials today will vote on the academic standards for the two half-credit, voluntary electives, which will teach interested high school students the history and literature of the Holy Scriptures.

Taxpayer-funded Bible Courses in GA Public School

From the Board of Education meeting minutes:

CI - Georgia Performance Standards for the Literature and History of the Old Testament Era and the Literature and History of the New Testament Era

Rationale:

Last year the General Assembly enacted legislation requiring the State Board of Education to provide for the offering of state-funded, elective high school courses in History and Literature of the Old Testament Era and the History and Literature of the New Testament Era. The law also required that the Board act on this legislation no later than February 1, 2007.

How did this get through the General Assembly without some serious press?

Back up. How did this get through the General Assembly?

Senate Bill 79
