Our finest moment.
Good job, fellow Atlantans!

We have managed to piss off even peaceful, good-natured Garrison Keillor.

hm.

i have mixed feelings about this.

yes, the chastain park people coulda been a little less unruly, but then again perhaps keillor coulda joined in the fun ?

i guess he's not used to the south.

I also think it's weird how everyone in Atlanta stays in their seats during concerts..and I mean..GOOD concerts. Of course at Chastain I guess one should stay in their seat? Freaking corporate asses.

Really? I go to tons of local music shows and national-level concerts and have never experienced this except for maybe a Tori Amos show in which case it's more appropriate to sit and listen.

eh not local music because lets face it local shows usually have limited seating in the bar..so can't gage off that..
but the last show I went to Coldplay.. sitting and listening..Then before that NIN nails.. sitting and listening..at NIN.. I have also seen this at a WWE event. This town is weird..
Dating people in the music industry a few years back I heard the complaint form alot of bands..like Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and even Nirvan way back when. My favorite was Adam Ant walking off stage at the Midtown Music Festival because of the same thing this performer experienced. If it's appropo to sit and listen then you should be playing Chastain or Woodruff Arts Center. Other than that..enjoy the music..dance if ya want to.

abominable is the perfect word!

The neighbors complained probably a decade ago, and ever since the volume has barely been above a whisper.

When you're in the audience, you can't hear anything coming from the stage so you just have to entertain yourself.

Entertaining oneself is best done in private.

I find this funny because I darn well enjoy sitting on my back porch and listening to the Chastain concerts. I mean it's free music, it's only during late spring and the summer, and it's not every night. i guess most people around here go to bed before they are over though. oh well.

they'll all be dead soon and then the chastain amphitheater can make a big comeback!

Good question. I've always thought of Chastain as its own area south of Sandy Springs but north of Buckhead. I don't know if it's in the new SS city limits or not!

it's not, it's about 50 yards from the city line.

I suspect part of that is to be expected with the different arrangement of Chastain from their usual format of just theaters, auditoriums and concert halls.

Sounds like audiences at Chastain to me. I hate that place.

I was sad that I didn't know about Keillor coming so I could buy tickets for my dad. But I guess maybe it wasn't the show to catch after all.

they've done the show at the Fox in the past. I'd imagine they'll return there at some point.

have you been to the opera in atlanta? I have noticed that a large part of the audience believes that performance art presentations invite audience participation.

Haha! Yes.

I like to go to the dress rehearsals. None of the peacocks seem to attend those - no one to ogle their finery.

I can't find anything on that site about a problem at Chastain, so I have no idea what happened. :o(

Basically, the people in the corporate seats up front were loud and drunk and shouted things at the stage.

That's typical at Chastain. The Real Fans (TM) have to wait to buy tickets when the singles go on sale, so they're sitting in the back, whilst those who are just there to be seen and see others (just like the theatre and the opera in Regency England) don't pay any attention to those on stage. Many years ago, during a Jethro Tull concert, one of the morons at the tables up front threw some cheese at Anderson. He left the stage, never to return that night.

And less said about the security, the better. Even if one has backstage passes, they still don't act nice.

And I couldn't find anything on the site about problems, either.

Chastain is a place to hang out, enjoy a nice catered meal, and chat. Whoever's on the stage is secondary. Some acts, including Bobby McFerrin (who stomped off a couple of songs into the show) won't play there agin, and I can't blame them.

I've enjoyed rock and jazz shows there, but going to listen to the Canadian Brass was frustrating. First of all, classical music shouldn't have to be amplified. And a venue with constant chatter isn't the place for any performance that involves subtlety. There is no such thing as silence at Chastain. If the folks on the stage aren't making noise, the folks at the tables will fill in.

I've had fun at Chastain shows, but you have to understand what it is. The acoustics are terrible, so everything has to be amplified. You're playing to people who are enjoying a pleasant summer evening, not folks in theater seats who are giving you their undivided attention. People talk, clink wine glasses, clatter silverware, and laugh at each other's jokes, not just yours. If you want a quiet, attentive audience, book the Fox instead.
