    Starting up again
    Hey everyone -

I was on Atkins from March of 2007 to about April of 2008 for medical reasons. I took myself off of it and 2 days ago decided that not only did it help me medically, but I felt better while I was on it. Due to my medical problems, I was not able to exercise, and recently have been given the "okay" to do so.

Are there any exercises that anyone has found work better than others (keeping in mind that obv. peoples bodies work differently than others)

    I'm 25 ... about 5'3" and am 190. Ultimately ... I'd like to get to be btwn 140-150 ...

Also ... I'm not a cooker, which was a huge problem for me last time I was on Atkins. Anyone know SIMPLE recipies that they could lend me?

    Thanks everyone!

    Hi :]
I'm a newbie to this community, but am by no means a newbie to the atkins diet. I'm starting it today, and i'm stickin to it!
I havn't put a single thing in my mouth yet today, and am currently making chicken in the crock pot. Later I will add some broth, and vegetables. Chicken and vegetable soup! yummm.
Funny story: I went digging in my freezer today to find some meat, and i found on chicken breast. Not long after did I realize I had more but the ice build up (mini fridge) had totally buried them!
I've got some pretty big goals.

I keep coming back to ATKINS because of one thing: IT WORKS.

    Back again :)

Admittedly, I have been on and off Atkins more times than I can count. I do not have the strength to give up most carbs for the rest of my life, and I can't seem to not binge when I go off Atkins and gain it all back again. So why am I here you ask? Well...........

The best I have ever done/felt with my weightloss is when my BF and I did Atkins and worked out together. Consentrating on lean meat and veg, and keeping out a lot of un needed fat.

So, I'm here again, giving it one more go. The plan this time is to go straight into Weight Watchers when Atkins is driving me crazy, and vice versa. Just felt like sharing :) Everyone have a wonderful day!

    A weekly tip.

If your Boston Market Chicken has been sitting in the refrigerator so long, that you feel the need to go online and do a google search to find out if it's too late to eat it, well, it's too late.

    Throw it away!

    Frustrated
Well, I haven't posted my progress in a while - because there seems to be no real progress to post about.

I was at a total of 8 pounds lost for about 3 weeks. then the next week - no weight loss. Then the week after 1 pound.

And these may not be accurrate weight losses as I will keep re-weighing until it shows a weight loss. lol

I'm a bit frustrated as to why it's so slowed down/stopped.

I've been doing a bit of strength training. Then I got the Fluidity Bar (which I do like).

I am about to start on doing 3-4 mile walks about 3 times a week or so. Hopefully that will help.

Maybe I've added in too many treats (though low carb they still may be causing stalls). Maybe I'm not eating enough protein. Or not drinking enough water (the hardest part for me funny enough).

Granted I'm pretty impatient - and it's always harder for folks to be a good judge on their own body changes - but I don't feel like they are really happening. I'm not too concerned with the scale - but doesn't seem like my body is changing inches wise either.

Ok, I'm feeling thirsty - time to load up on some water. I've GOT to get better about drinking my water!

    YUM
I've been experimenting with doing fried veggies and such.

Today I think I came up with my best "breading".

I bought some Soy Flour by Hodgson Mill (10 total carbs but 6 fiber for a net of 4 per 1/4 cup - and I don't even use close to that much at a time)

Today I mixed up a few tablespoons of that (didn't measure) plus some parmesan cheese (from the green can) plus some black pepper and garlic powder.

I was lazy so I coated my veggies (mushrooms and some onions) in PAM cooking spray and then coated it with my "breading" mix.

Fried it up in a pan of corn oil and enjoyed.

Darned tasty. I also tried doing a fried cheese - since my coating wasn't superthick the cheese got melty but it was still good.

My only issue - even when I use egg I can't seem to get my veggies (or cheese) FULLY coated. Granted I like it anyways but for a cheese stick I'd really like it fully coated and don't know what I'm doing wrong or if it is possible without carby versions of stuff.

I'm not much of a cook so I'm still learning stuff.

I do recommend the soy flour though - does seem to help.

    Weight Loss Update
Hello All!  I said I'd update to see how the first week went....has it been a week or has it been two? I can't remember.  Well, it looks like I've lost about 5 lbs this week, so I'm very pleased.  I really need to start walking on my treadmill so I can speed up this process.  I was 280 for my doctor's appointment in January and he and I thought I should shoot for a 45lb weight loss this year (my personal goal is to hit 199).  Well, he had changed up my thyroid meds (cut it by 1/3) and I had some super stress with my kids, so I was off the diet and gained a bit.  I'm back on track because I'm sick of being sick by being glucose intolerant and having migraines from all the stress and eating badly.  So, I was 286 today (which I know is accurate because I have a doctor's scale that has been calibrated) and will continue to try to do as well as I have this past week.

I have found fitday.com to be helpful.  I've noticed that I have days that I call "perfect days" where my carb intake is 20 grams or less and my fat intake is around 40% or less of my daily calories.  With my protein intake being so high (140 g or more), it seems that I'm really in ketosis mode, and burning a lot of fat.  If I can get the fat intake down to 35%, all the more better for me.  Has anyone ever logged their food intake while on Atkins to see what their "perfect day" is like?  Or am I just being weird?

Hi everyone! I'm gearing up to go on Atkins again.

I did about 3 weeks last month and lost 14 pounds, but just couldn't stay motivated. I found that I was not very organized. Planning meals beforehand so they're ready to go when you're hungry was my biggest obstacle. Water is also extremely important as "tiger" stated, but I'm such a diet coke junkie it's hard to give up my carbonated drinks. Anyone out there feel me?

I'm doing much better with my exercise program now that I've switched to what I "should" do and doing what I "want" to do. Instead of going on long stressful walks with the dog tripping me up every five steps, I've taken up a yoga class, an aerobic swim class and a hula class. Ahhh much much better!

Hey all you Atkinsers. I haven't been on Atkins in three years, and have gained a lot of weight since then. At that point, I went from 260 pounds down to 217, and I was so happy with my results. The last time I was weighed, I tipped the scale at 273. I'm pretty sure I've gained more since then, and I'd be willing to bet I'm pushing 300. I'm absolutely disgusted with myself. I just got done eating really bad stuff, and now I'm full to busting, and miserable.

I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling in the next six weeks, but starting on August first, I'm getting back on Atkins. I'm tired of not being able to fasten my seatbelt on an airplane, or even in a car. And I'm beginning to strain the seams on my size 22 jeans. I'm five foot ten; I think I should be around a size twelve.

Anyway, here endeth the rant. I really love to read all the success stories on this community; they've always been so helpful when I've attempted low carb eating. Thanks so much for that, and keep all the encouragement coming. Have a great weekend.

    Weekly update
Well, the good news is I'm still losing and enjoying the diet/lifestyle.

The bad news - I'm an impatient person and I'm not losing as FAST as I want.

I'm down another pound or so. I just added it up and my total weight loss in three weeks is 8 pounds.

Last weekend I was away and ate out the whole time - but didn't cheat. Had no desire to.

The other night I had a dream where I was hogging down on sugary stuff. I woke up relieved that wasn't true.

This week I have been bad in the sense of not drinking enough water. That is usually the hardest part for me.

Also I haven't done squat (ha!) as far as exercise. I'm going to try a weight training program only. I know that it may screw up the scale but I'm more about what I see in the mirror and such.

In more good news I FEEL like I'm getting leaner. Clothes are looking better on me. It's small changes but they are changes none the less.

Most importantly - while I haven't lost a ton of weight - I feel SO MUCH better about my body. Before I started I just felt disgusted with myself. I don't feel disgusted with myself at all. I'm not where I want to be but I'm feeling a lot gentler with myself and happier with my appearance. That is such a relief. It's tiring to hate your body/appearance.

Also this week I've had some low carb ice cream. I don't ever eat one full serving which is half a cup. I have a couple of spoonfuls and I'm fine. So I have had a bit more sugary (compared to strict induction) foods so that may be slowing things down a bit.

Oh, I finally did get around to making my taco salad that I like. So good. And I got some avacados and the mix stuff and made some great guacamole. I've been enjoying that.

Goals for the upcoming week: Get back to drinking the right amount of water!
And - start the strength training.

As far as foods go - has anyone ever had a fried avacado? I had one at a mexican place. It was filled with chicken and cheese and stuff and it was SO good. The only carby part was the breading. I'm going to try it at home. Hopefully the soy flour and something else will make a decent breading and I can fry that sucker right up. I had that one in December and I've been craving another since. I'm going to see if I can find a recipe to be on the safe side.

Anyhoo - keep on keepin' on everyone!

Hello everyone!  My quick story is as follows: I'm 21, 5 foot 8", and when I was 18, lost about 10 pounds on atkins, putting me at my lowest weight (127). I know it seems young to start, but I was interested in trying and boy did I like what I saw.

So then college happened, I lost track, and am back up to 146lbs. Yuck. I almost couldn't believe the scale when I saw it. So I'm going to give low-carb a try again.

I'm somewhat nervous though, with this being my second time around and being 3 years older. Age affects weight loss, right? As do "second tries"? In any case, I'm giving it a go, throwing out the cereal and granola bars in my pantry.

So... just sharing my story and polling for any similar experiences. Other than that..just thanks for being active!

Also: I must ask... what is everyone's experience with alcohol? I do definitely enjoy my more-than-occasional drink. Of course I can limit it to carb-free hard stuff and seltzer water and such -- just as long as it won't drastically inhibit weight loss...

    Lurker turned Poster
Hello all.  My name is Lynn and I found this community sometime in the last couple of weeks.  I was impressed that this community was so active, which was why I joined and started lurking.  I am obviously pro Atkins and it has taken me approximately 4 years to really learn how the diet works and why it is the best "lifestyle change" for me.

I'm back on the induction phase to see if I can't jump start my metabolism.  Today is day one and I'll report back in a week to let you know of my progress.

    Thanks for being here.

    Progress
Well, initially in the first week my weight loss showed at 9.2 pounds. When I weighed in for week 2 results - I was up. Dang it - I KNEW most of that 9.2 pounds was water. Still for two weeks I'm down about 6 pounds or so. Still not bad. Slowly but surely I'm seeing some changes.

I was out of town this weekend and I still did great with my eating. At the Mexican place my friend and I went to on Friday evening I ordered steak fajitas (no rice or beans) and asked them to hold the tortillas. I then mixed up all the stuff and had a big salad type deal. It was delicious.

I'd brought low carb yogurt and atkins bars for snacks and breakfast. Oh and whole almonds. Lunch on Saturday was beef tips with salad and steamed veggies. Luckily the places we went to had some options so that I could get veggies instead of fries or what not.

So I'm happy with my staying the course. And I'm surprisingly not upset about the seeming "weight gain". I know it's not true weight gain. Just more of an adjustment from the first week.

I'd be very happy with losing about 3 pounds a week. Or even an average of 10 per month. My goal is about 30 pounds. Maybe a bit less or a bit more. It's really going to depend on how clothes fit and how I feel at certain weights. That'll be my true determining factor. But I can still achieve my goals within 3 months or so. And I am going to the beach at the end of September - so extra motivating factor there too!

    Another thing on the menu
A few years back some friends of mine who were also Atkins-ing did the fried veggies thang. I don't remember their exact recipe for the 'breading' but I know it involved almonds and parmesean.

Today I bought myself a deep fryer. Then some cooking oil. Then some "regular" mushrooms (not cut up - whole) and some zuchinni.

I already had whole almonds. Consumer tip - if you do NOT have the Magic Bullet blender thing I highly recommend it - I've had one for a while now and love it. And I saw them in Walmart today when I was looking for a deep fryer.

I used the Magic Bullet to turn the almonds into powder. Boy howdy did that work and fast.

Then I mixed in some parm cheese (from the can).

A little garlic powder and black pepper and my breading was done.

Then I draged the veggies through some egg then the breading. Fried it up.

Granted these were my first attempts at EVER deep frying. I probably have to work on the time a bit. Also I think I should make the breading a bit spicier - I like it that way. I need more garlic and pepper I think.

But still - yum. I'd been having a hankering for fried mushrooms lately.

Also at the store I got some vital gluten and soy flour. Both very low in carbs. I may try those in the mix at some point - experiment. Before I got my supplies I was googling low carb deep fried veggie recipes and that vital gluten stuff was mentioned a time or two.

So yea! Another yummy but low carb thing to eat. I love it and it doesn't even have cheese on it! Ohhhh, wait I forgot - I'm going to try fried mozerella sticks next! Can't wait for that!

    Breastfeeding and Atkins
I'm currently exclusively feeding my 5 mo old twin girls breastmilk. Breastfeeding itself didn't work for us, but I pump.

I find that I get crazy cravings while doing this. I also get REALLY hungry sometimes. It's made it very hard to keep my eating in any sort of plan. I've lost 52 out of the 62 lbs I gained during my pregnancy without any effort, but I'd like to lose more... especially since I began my pregnancy 15 lbs higher than usual due to IVF weight gain.

Long story short, I'm interested in going back on Atkins. But, everything says not to diet while BF'ing, and not to restrict carbs while BF'ing either. I'm wondering if anyone has any concrete information about the risks of Atkins while BF'ing. I think it would be the best diet plan for me at this point since it eliminates cravings (for me) and also isn't low calorie (I need calories to make milk!).

    What I've been eating
In response to my week one results post (9.2 lbs lost) someone asked me what I've been eating.

    So here goes:

I'm not much of a cook. So I've been eating quite a few omlettes. I do like adding in some jalpenos and tomatoes plus cheese cooked together then some sour cream on top. Or just plain cheese omlettes (but I'll use different cheeses. I may also add in a bit of white onion for some more zing. Oh and pepper jack cheese is yum). Of course omlettes and what you can add to them are pretty unlimited - just a matter of taste preference.

The other thing I eat that I love to get my necessary carbs and veggies in is a little casserole I whip up. I first steam up some broccoli and/or squash. Then in a bowl I mix up those veggies a slice or two of american cheese, sour cream, maybe I'll add portabello mushrooms, a bit of artichoke and again some white onion and also some garlic powder and black pepper for some spice. Then I put it in a little pan and put some shredded cheddar on top and bake it for a while so everything is all melty and hot.

I admit I do not follow the rules of induction exactly - I have more cheese than they say. That's part of the reason I love atkins - being able to eat cheese!!!!! It's one of my favorite things ever.

For a snack I will eat that fresh mozzerella. Love that. You know the mozzerella that comes more in a ball shape?

Oh, and I had this for the first time last night - I read in the comments someone suggesting this - pepperoni and cream cheese! HOLY CRAP I loved that. I've been eating plenty of pepperoni slices with cheddar cheese or what have you.

Also (though it's been a few days) I have salad. I just do cucumber, celery, sometimes a bit of tomato, a bit of artichoke, maybe some sliced luncheon meat (like turkey) and shredded cheese and home made dressing (nothing fancy but those Good Seasoning packets for Italian where you add, olive oil, vinegar and water).

Oh, I made a good tuna salad - the best tip I can say - spring for the GOOD tuna fish in a can. The white chunk albacore or whatever. The real salty mushy stuff - ugh I can barely choke that down anymore. Then what I mix with the tuna - mayo, pickles, a bit of onion, celery, maybe some shredded cheese.

Then if I'm a bit hungry but don't want to cook or mix anything - luncheon meat and cheese.

Oh, last week I did this too - I sauted some mushrooms and squash in olive oil and shrimp - adding in some black pepper and garlic powder for seasoning. That was pretty darned good. I tried it with butter too but I personally preferred the olive oil way.

Oh, and I love deviled eggs. I tend to boil up a bunch of eggs to keep on hand. Either I eat the egg by itself for a snack or to add to the tuna salad or to make the deviled eggs. For deviled eggs I don't have anything fancy - I just mix the yolks with mayo and maybe a bit of onion and pickle chopped up and a bit of salt.

I really have been trying to avoid excess salt - so the deviled eggs have been the only time I actually add salt.

In a pinch I have gotten the Atkins advantage bars. I try to only eat those if it means eat nothing (which is not good) or eat something carby or really processed. For example I had one today - I had to run around and didn't have a chance to eat anything before I left the house. I was hungry and I knew I wouldn't be able to get to the house for a while. So I had a bar.

Only other thing I can think of that I've eaten this past week or so was I did grill up a piece of Mahi Mahi on the george foreman type grill.

Otherwise I'm not that adventuresome. I find stuff I like and stick with it.

Oh, something I used to do but haven't yet (I will soon) - I love taco salads. The taco seasoning is a bit carby so I don't use the full amount. Do up the ground beef and then add in lettuce, sour cream, cheese, salsa.

So far this time around I have yet to go out to eat. Which is rare for me. But I've been home this whole time. I did go to a party right after starting and I did eat stuff like cheese and meats and veggies and ranch dip. I did have hummus which may not have been great for induction - but it obviously didn't do much harm for me.

I have been really good (for once) about drinking a lot of water. I have had a bit of diet soda but not a ton. Also I did make up a batch of the Crystal Lite Peach Tea which i love. But I still drink all my water - no matter what else I may drink.

Well, that's all that I can think of that I've actually been eating this past week or so since I started back.

I'm also open to other snack and such options. Just a warning: I HATE pork rinds. Luckily I'm not a big chip person but I wish there was something if I was wanting a dip type thing - though usually if I have something like that I use celery for the dip.

    Week one results
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! I posted last week and said how I'd started again, fully committed a week ago - last Friday.

I'd done a sorta midway through the week weigh in and was down about 2.5 pounds. I usually only like to weigh in once a week so I waited to go to it again this morning.

I hop on the scale. I set it down in the exact same location as before (I base on floor tiles so there is NO difference in the floor - no slanting, etc.) And I was elated to see that from last Friday I am down 9.2 pounds! Whooo hooo!!!!!

My resolve has not wavered at all this week and this just helped to keep the motivation going. These results are similar to when I was really successful with Atkins for the first time nearly five years ago. And I'm doing really well with something that I usually struggle with - drinking enough water. I am drinking about 2 liters a day. I even bought those stainless steel water bottles yesterday for the extra health factor (not worried about plastic leeching or whatever).

and while I'm not getting in as much exercise as I'd like - I'm doing some and I know I'll increase it over time. Actually I like to take the exercise nice and gentle the first week since being so low on carbs can make cardio and such a bit tougher.

anyhoo - I'm VERY glad I got my butt in gear and went back to what I know works for me - Atkins. I don't yet see much of a difference in the mirror - but I know that will come soon enough. I'm just thrilled that the scale shows a difference already!

Good luck to everyone!!! And happy weekend!
