Not feel good on Atkins?

I really don't believe people who say they are doing this diet and not feeling good. It's a healthy diet. The danger zone is that there is room for people to make really bad choices and eat foods that will "not make them feel good". I eat lean meat or fish and vegetables everyday, I eat a salad for lunch everyday. Bacon and Cheese and Eggs or an Atkins shake for breakfast every day. What is there not to feel good about? They've gotta be making bad choices and then blaming the diet for their bad choices. If you stick primarily to whole foods and take a multi vitamin, there is no reason you should be feeling bad on this diet unless something else is wrong with you and you should see a doctor.

Regular bowel movements are also important. That could cause you to not feel good. If you are not using the bathroom at least (bare minimum) once a day, you need to work on that.

Also, the people who say they did the diet before and didn't like it, and now they are back, I don't get them either. If you didn't like the diet the first time, why are you doing it again? There is more than one way to lose weight. Maybe this isn't your path.

Personally, even though I had a shaky week last week, because I didn't feel like cooking, I am loving my Atkins experience and I feel very good about it health wise.

Oh P.S, here's a good recipe for you... Approximately 7 Net Carbs
http://www.calorie-count.com/recipe/41701.html

I've done Atkins before, but took a break from it over the holidays, and also while recovering from an illness. Now I'm planning a trip to FLA in 8 weeks, and I want to use this time to get in shape and get back on Atkins. I'd like to start tomorrow, but I still have a lot carby foods in the house...I either have to eat them or toss them. Either way, I've gotta get it together. I'm looking forward to being smaller and buying a new bathing suit! :)

I have a quick question...

Has it been anyone else's experience that using Splenda while on the Atkins pretty much stalls the weight loss? In fact, I feel like I'm gaining it back. Do you have any recommendations for sweetener other than Splenda?

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving - what do you make for dinner with all the family coming over?

Thanks everyone!

Cross posted to Atkins communities.

Hi! I think it was in this community where I saw these asian style "noodle" things that were low in carb, and I went to the website and ordered some, and they were good. Well now I want to find them again for a recipe I want to try, and I just can't remember what they're called. I looked through old entries in this community and another for like an hour with no luck.

They're sort of squishy, wet noodles that come in a plastic package...

Perhaps an asian word that starts with "N?"

I'm drawing a blank.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I hope someone does!

X-posted

I have been messing around with coconut milk, as a replacement for cream. I have never gone off dairy before, and thought I would try it. Right now, I am eating paleo, with the occasional peanut thrown in. Here are two ideas I had for coconut milk. One, you can use it to cream your coffee, and two, you can make a curry dip for veggies. All I added was curry paste, but you could get more sophisticated than that. Coconut is a super food, full of lauric acid, which fights bacteria in your gut, and rev.'s your metabolism. Every ounce has 2 grams of carb.'s, so it isn't a freebie, but I think it's health benefits make it worth using the grams on.

From foxnews.com:

Government Advises Eating Whole Grains
Monday, March 28, 2005

Go ahead, have a piece of bread. Have three. Make it whole-grain, and you'll be following government advice for eating right.

Three servings of whole grains each day will reduce your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes (search). It doesn't have to be bread. Brown or wild rice, oatmeal, cold cereal flakes, popcorn — without the salt and butter — and even trail mix will do.

Of all the new advice in the government's new dietary guidelines, eating enough whole grains may prove the easiest.

But if eating whole grains is so easy, then why aren't people doing it now? Most Americans are eating one serving or less each day, according to the Agriculture Department.

One reason may be that a little sleuthing is needed to figure out which foods have whole grains.

Just because a bread slice is dark, or a cracker looks grainy, doesn't mean the whole grain is there. They could be darkened by molasses or other coloring.

You need to look on the ingredient list to make sure you've got whole grains. The words "whole" or "whole grain" should come before the grain ingredient. And that should be the very first thing listed.

Food companies are trying to make to make it easier. General Mills Inc. last year converted all its breakfast cereals to whole grain and now puts a big "Whole Grain" logo on the front of the box.

Some companies are using a black-and-gold label shaped like a postage stamp for identifying products that contain whole grains. Bruegger's Bagels, Kashi, Gardenburger and Snyder's of Hanover are among those using the stamp, which was developed by Oldways Preservation Trust, a Boston-based think tank that specializes in food issues.

Once purchased, eat three ounce-equivalents a day. It's not hard to do. These measurements equal about an ounce:

—A half-cup of cooked cereal, rice or pasta.

—A slice of bread.

—1 cup of cold cereal flakes.

—An ounce of dry pasta or rice.

"If you have a cereal high in whole grains, and you have a sandwich with whole grain bread for lunch, you can get your number of servings right there," said Joanne Lupton, a Texas A&M University nutrition professor who helped write the guidelines.

Mark Andown, technical director for nutrition at Quaker, said a cup of oatmeal for breakfast counts as two servings of whole grains.

"When you think about a snack, think about trail mix. It's not weird food," said K. Dun Gifford, president of Oldways.

This effort may seem to contradict the thinking behind popular low-carb diets such as Atkins and South Beach. But while both of those diets insist that people eliminate most carbohydrates in the first two weeks, after that it's all about choosing "good" carbs, such as whole grains.

Scientists don't quite understand how and why whole grains are good for you.

"It would be nice if we knew the answer to that question; unfortunately, we don't," said Lupton. "It's not just the fiber. It's something in addition to that that has to do with having the whole grain."

A whole grain is the entire seed or kernel — from grains like wheat, oats, corn or rye. They are packed with fiber, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, and besides helping guard against heart disease and diabetes, they also contain cancer-fighting antioxidants and other nutrients.

They lose the good stuff when grains are refined or processed. Manufacturers generally fortify their food with nutrients, but it's not the same.

To promote Pepperidge Farm's new line of whole grain bread, the company signed up celebrity chef and Food Network host Bobby Flay (search) to create sandwich recipes. Among his recommendations are whole wheat with grilled salmon salad and lemon mayonnaise, or grilled eggplant, zucchini and roasted red pepper with roasted garlic mayonnaise.

In his Manhattan ad Las Vegas restaurants, Flay serves dishes made with more exotic whole grains, such as quinoa and faro. But he thinks most people will tune out if you try to interest them in foods they aren't used to eating.

"I wouldn't tell people to go out and make faro salad. If they can just open up a loaf of bread and make a sandwich, they're more apt to do that," Flay said.

x-posted.

Tales of an addict

This is pathetic, but I thought I would share my story incase anyone else has this problem.
My family has about a 90% alcoholism rate on my dad's side. Really and
truly. Most marriages end up in disaster, the holidays are a travesty.
For myself, I had a real problem with alcohol in high school and
college. I gave it up by smoking tons of pot for a few years, which
didn't have the same addictive properties at all, so, when I wanted to
quit it was no problem. Basically, for the last 13 years I have lived
an outwardly normal looking life. No drug use and normal use of wine or
beer, like one with dinner, and that's it. On the inside I was The
SUGAR ADDICT FROM HELL. I couldn't not think about it, and ate a ton of
sugar. The first time I went low carb, 5 years ago, I controlled my
sugar use enough to get within about 10 pounds of my goal weight, but
felt cravy all the time. Anxious, jittery, etc. Well, I lost control
and gained a bunch of weight, had a baby, and tried for the last 3
years to get back on, but couldn't do it. I couldn't make it through a
single meal. But, I did work on myself in other ways, and I am in a
much more mentally healthy place now. I have been on my diet now for 5
weeks and feel great. Cheating doesn't even sound good. I am not
needing to use artificial sweeteners this time around. I have chocolate
in the house and forget that it is there. The one thing I did
differently was follow an amino acid course, based on the book "THe
Diet Cure" By Julia Ross, Which addresses the need to fix brain
chemistry for people with the type of genetic background I have. I did
it this summer for about 6 weeks, and felt much better. She recommends
doing it longer, and I might try it again after my trip this week. It
made me feel like I could live without substance abuse. While I was on
the amino acids, I tried to binge on chips and dip and couldn't get a
rush at all. So, the amino acids seems to fill the brain back up with
the good chemicals it needs, so I can feel normal. YAY!!! The reason
for this somewhat embarrassing tell all?

Does anyone else out there have addiction issues? How do you cope?
Because, I feel great now, but want to be prepared for a time when I
feel like throwing in the towel. Any comments would be aprreciated.
