Zito off the market?

[info]ayrdaomei
MLB.com has sources saying Zito's signing with the Giants. Allegedly, seven years, $126 million. Richest contract ever signed by a pitcher. Because the Giants are INSANE. But yay for staying in the Bay Area.

And um. I'll make up for this OT post by posting some magazine scans tonight, or something ^_~

Plans Underway For New Stadium In Fremont

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) -- KCBS has learned that the Oakland Athletics will soon announce plans to move the club to Fremont, and build a new stadium complex there.

KCBS sports anchor Steve Bitker broke the story Monday morning, learning via a source that Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to come to the Bay Area next Tuesday, November 14, and is expected to make the announcement along with A's owner Lew Wolfe, Fremont city officials, and executives from Cisco Systems, which will lease the land for the complex.

The A's have not yet commented, except to say that they hope to make an official major announcement soon. The commissioner's office has not yet commented, either, but may comment shortly, according to Bitker.

The team has long worked for a new stadium deal, and KCBS's Bitker reports that the Fremont pact is expected to involve a 40,000 seat ballpark and surrounding residential and retail village.

Stay tuned to KCBS or log onto KCBS.com for updates, as they happen.

Chavvy moves on to second hand....

[info]urbansnowgirl
Chavez was announced the '06 Gold Glove winner at 3rd base for the 6th year in a row today!!!!!! He worked very hard even though he was hurt all year. His offense suffered tremensly, but he kicked ass at defense. Congrats to Eric!!

Ellis got robbed. I know Grudzie had a fantastic year, but how can you beat the new record for FPct of .997 by a second baseman??? Come on people!

Sad day....

[info]urbansnowgirl
Zito filed for free agency today. :( And so now the torture worsens.

NEW YORK -- Oakland's Barry Zito, who could be the most sought-after pitcher in this year's free-agent market, filed for free agency Tuesday.

Zito, a 28-year-old left-hander with a coveted, looping curveball, was 16-10 with a 3.83 ERA in 34 starts this season. He never missed a start because of injury in his first seven major league seasons with the Athletics, who acknowledged before the 2006 season they probably wouldn't be able to afford the 2002 AL Cy Young award winner once he became a free agent.

[info]teenagewildlife

anyone remember these? they can all be accessed from that link - 2001, 2002 and 2003. actually, there are a whole bunch of links to audio interviews with a lot of other current/past players on there as well. i could never get them to play for me before and of course, they're not working for me now even though i have a brand new computer. i don't suppose anyone knows of a way to rip them so we can get them in here before they're eventually deleted?

meanwhile, a few lockers away, a teammate is reading 'barely legal centerfolds' )

with apologies to [info]soiree

[info]ayrdaomei
Good morning, campers!

Since there was no Yanks/Tigers game last night, I finally got off my ass and scanned the September A's magazine.
  • Cover story on Swish. I thought this piece was kind of a snore, but YMMV.
  • Indepth piece on Kirk Saarloos: "My personality fits in great here...I love my job and I enjoy what I do, but I like to have fun doing it. And in this organization, they don't try and cookie-cut you; they allow you to be what you are."
  • Leading Off: randomness on Blanton, Harden, Big Frank, and Bradley. A thing on where the guys like to hang out when they're home. Jay Witasick's answer slays me.
  • He Said/She Said/He Said with Bobby Crosby, his girlfriend, and Adam Melhuse. Is it me or does Bobby's girl kinda look like Tinkerbell?
  • Cool piece on Kendall and the mechanics of calling an inning. I really recommend this.
  • Neat piece on the A's audio engineer and the relationship between the A's clubhouse and music.
  • Dinner on the Diamond photos: notable because we finally see what Dan's Jess looks like. Also, I continue to have a crush on Jamie Kotsay, for no conceivable reason.

If you're not reading Z's blog, you're totally missing out. I bet if he could update 20 times a day, he would. Heh.

I scanned the story on Adam Melhuse from the July/August A's magazine. It's been added to the gallery (here).

I finally figured out how to actually get our scanner to capture magazine pages in color in good resolution, so for those who are interested, I scanned the July/August A's mag cover story on Dan Haren, as well as Urban's short piece on Kotsay. And the three page thing on the Swisher/Blanton/Harden/OnceAlsoStreetButNoLonger house. The gallery is (here). I left the scans fairly big, but if anyone needs them smaller and can't do the resizing, lemme know.

Oh, and there was an indepth piece on Melhuse that I didn't scan, but could, if there's interest in it.

Contractor Sues A's Ace Barry Zito Over WeHo Home

[info]oakchick75
(AP) LOS ANGELES A contractor has sued Barry Zito, claiming the Oakland Athletics pitcher owes more than $200,000 for remodeling work on his West Hollywood home.

Ramland Construction claims Zito breached the written deal theyhad when the pitcher allegedly stopped payments in February on the original bill of $563,000.

The work included $27,000 for new kitchen cabinets, a $20,000 Koi fish pond, $12,000 dollars in new kitchen appliances, a $10,000 aquarium, $7,100 for an aquarium enclosure and $4,200 for a fire pit.

An attorney for the contractor says he will try to have the case sent to arbitration.

Zito won the AL Cy Young Award in 2002. This season, he has a 8-3 record with a 3.36 ERA.

Barry Zito Demands Trade To World Without War

April 20, 2006 | Issue 42•16

OAKLAND, CA—With the A's exploring the possibility of moving their soon-to-be free-agent pitcher Barry Zito, and with everything around him only getting more violent and chaotic with each passing day, the introspective southpaw demanded Tuesday that he be traded to a world unaffected by "the ravages humanity has brought upon itself." "My client is seeking a fresh start for himself and/or mankind, as he can no longer enjoy pitching in a universe where people are suffering, starving—even dying—all around him," Zito's agent Arn Tellem said. "Barry informs me that the only viable solution to both senseless worldwide bloodshed and the problem with his pitching mechanics is simply to live every day with love." Zito has reportedly said that, if he absolutely must remain on this Earth, he demands a trade through the halls of time itself, as he has narrowed down his list of potential trade destinations to the 1924 Chicago Cubs, the 1969 Baltimore Orioles, and the present-day Yankees.

Scans, part 1

[info]roxybritain
My subject line was going to have something to the effect of, "Tasty as a chocolate egg, but far fewer calories," but since today's game just took about ten years off my life, I'm going to be a grumpy sourpuss.

Despite this however, I will get back to my point, which was to post Part 1 of my A's scans. Today, I have some scans from the April/May issue of the magazine, a couple from the spring training issue. Part 2, which I will post later or tomorrow or something, will have pages from the yearbook (and there are lots!). I was going to post them all at once, but it took me pretty much the entire length of the game to upload the ones I already have, so... I'm tired of sitting here at my computer screen. This is quite enough for today.

These are the hugest-ass files ever, and there are many, so rather than displaying them or even thumbnailing, I'm just going to put the links, and you can save-target-as to your heart's content:

March (spring training issue)
The cover - Kendall
Street from the table of contents (minus his right arm, which took up the entire left side)

April/May
Cover - Crosby/Street
Contents - Street/Crosby
A cool picture of Swisher from a little blurb about his bats
Crosby - Back to...
... Back - Street
Photo and article, page 1
Photo and article, page 2
Photo and article, page 3
Photo and article, page 4
An ad we haven't seen yet

*sigh* Danny Haren was marvelous today. That's just tough.

*EDIT* Oooh, forgot to post a request for you guys. Did anyone go to yesterday's game and get one of those A's calendars? Apparently they feature pictures of the A's with their dogs, and I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it if someone who had it would scan it. (In addition to loving the A's, I also love dogs. And I definitely love pictures of cute boys with cute dogs.)
