I am in San Francisco...
If you want to say hello, I'll be at the Fluff Girl / Farticus / Cretatious / Skitzo show at Belazo on Friday night after 8:30. I might try to get a drink at the Eagle in the late afternoon too, but we'll see. | | Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 | 10:47 am [atakra]

Oh, and if any of you Prop 8 supporters didn't realize...
I'm a total asshole when I don't get what I want. Here's what i've been posting on all the NM message boards of relevance: "Prop 8 and Blake's Lotaburger's financial influx... Blake's Lotaburger started in Albuquerque in 1952. In 2008, Blake's Lotaburger executive Brian Rule donated $10,000 to discriminate against the marriage rights of gays and lesbians in California's a measure designed to go against Proposition 8, a measure designed to eliminate a previous law enabling Gay, Lesbian, and Transgendered peoples to legally receive equal rights in "marriage" as straight people." I'm getting all sorts of positive responses so far... But am really waiting for the naysayers... | | Friday, October 24th, 2008 | 11:26 pm [atakra]

Playlist for my DJ gig tonight!
1st Legit DJ gig in about 12 years went awesome! Got there early and I think I *should* have just gone on right then, but there was this awesome countrified version of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" called "Rebuild the Wall" playing and i sort of got lost in that and getting people to show up really (No real structure to this show, let alone promotion). I opened the evening for a thrash metal band and then DJ Ginger went on and did her DJ thing, and then a Rockabilly band called "Shit Outa Luck" played. Here's what I played: Flipper - Ha Ha Ha (off the Let Them Eat jellybeans Comp) Veronica Lipgloss and the Evil Eyes - Unicorn Song (Off Witch's Dagger) El Dopa - Ed (Off the Shit Gets Smashed Comp) Joe Pop-O-Pies - I Am the Walrus (Off Joe's Third Album) The Phantom Limbs - Topanga Canyon Torture (off Random Hymns) Christ on Parade - America The Myth (off Sounds of Nature) Fleshies - Fat cop (off Kill the Dreamer's Dream) The Epoxies - Synthesized (off Stop the Future) Butthole surfers - Suicide (off Brown Reason to Live, 2nd printing... My 1st printing got smashed by Sherrie Frost and Chip way back when I lived at the Cave in Arcata, CA in 1995) Stikky - Quality vs. Quantity, and The Song about Annihilating Poseurs... More great shit here, Everyone should own this record) The Triggers - Let's Mutate (off Shoot Your Mouth Off) Mighty Sphincter - Impetigo (off the Ghost Walking Double EP... Because the headlining band is based in Arizona) Vox Pop - Become a Pagan (More awesome stuff here featuring Don Bolles and Dinah Cancer before the Germs and 45 Grave) Christian Lunch - Neighborhood Watch (off the Unreliable Sources EP, which spells Sorses on the spine, I just realized) Spermbirds - Another Dead Friendship (off Nothing is Easy) Dystopia - Word of wisdom (off the Misanthropic LP) Aus Rotten - Xenophobia (off the ...And Now Back to our Programming LP) and finally, just to lead into the metal band that was setting up for the last two songs I played Contropotere - Varagan, and U.S.P. (off Il Seme Della Devianza LP... Some brilliant Italian Doom/Crust Punk music that nobody except die-hard obscure metal fans seem to be aware of...) 7 of the bands I played, I've seen live. Two of those have played in my living room! I brought enough records to play a six-hour set. This set lasted about 50 minutes. Funny, I guess I shouldn't be shocked that people think that all this music is "OLD SCHOOL", because I don't really think of it that way, but then again I don't listen to much popular music that is referred to as "punk" because it just isn't. All the music played came from vinyl records! Shocker!, But the CD player wasn't working and all the industrial and synthpunk music I brought on CD probably wouldn't have been apropriate for the crowd. | | Wednesday, July 9th, 2008 | 6:37 pm [atakra]

Cretacious & Psychology of Genocide - Annie's Social Club, 1/18/2008
I got to the show a few hours early and hung out with Lynn the bartender, kaus_kelly and Peregrin for a bit. I was only drinking beer all night, but made the stupendous blunder of leaving my Canon camera's sole battery at Catlin's, so no pictures. Right around 8:30 the bands started rolling in and of course the entire old Phantom Limbs crowd showed up. It was great to see so many people show up for Cretacious' first show... especially since I've been hearing about them since they started playing in private TWO YEARS AGO! So only a few people had ever seen them because (as Mike Klosoff told me), "We just got a PA system." I think that may have been a joke. Cretacious is funny... Damn funny. And with members from the Phantom Limbs and The Hideous, it is easy to see why. It's unpretentious screamo metal at times with outstanding drumming and guitar riffs (or whatever they were), and a smoke machine to beat. Songs that I remember were "Megasomething Dawn of the Dead" about an undead zombie shark, and some song called "Meateor" (sp?) about a huge comet comprised entirely of meat cooked to a fine perfection in earth's atmosphere. Much dancing was had by all except the nerds in the "Joke-EO-Kee" room in the back who were acting out tired episodes of Seinfeld with fake hasidic beards and yamakas... Huh? Second up was Psychology of Genocide; a veritable whose who of San Francisco punk bands featuring members of Cookie Mongoloid among other bands that i have frankly forgotten the names of. It was fun seeing Jake and James dressed up like freaks, but I think the comedy wore thin after a while. The music was also fun, but again, I think that following the powerhouse that was Cretatious (and perhaps a few two many beers) caused their performance to suffer a bit. I'd give them a B for effort, and an A- for comedy. All in all it wasn't too shabby an evening. I skipped the final band, which was (I think) Pawns, who had TONS of merch, but I had no idea who they were although at least one person in the band's van was recognizable from SOMEWHERE. I think You Die and Worship of Silence cancelled, but don't hold me to that because I was too tired to do anything more than walk across town to the crash pad, blissfully ignorant of all the crack and heroin dealers wandering about my general vicinity. | | Monday, November 19th, 2007 | 10:54 pm [atakra]

If you see ONE MOVIE THIS YEAR...
Go see The Mist... strictly for the gore and creepy extra-dimensional monsters. Oh and the ending was entertaining and you could see it coming a mile away, even if you don't read Stephen King books (I stopped that nonsense decades ago). My great night in Chicago
I had a most wonderful evening in Chicago on Sunday night, when I went out with my nephew, Paul, to see what Loto-Ball has done with his gallery in town here. After my sister-in law's memorial service on Saturday, which was lovely, by the way, we were back at my brother's house and sitting around shootin' the shit, and I looked up Reversible Eye Gallery to see if we could go over there sometime. There was a phone number listed and I called it and Loto-Ball picked it right up! I said, drunkenly, hey! I'm in town, and he said you're coming to the show tomorrow, right? I said what show? He said it's sold out but you're coming and then gave me his cell number. Wooo-hoo! Little did I know that it was this: Quintron and Miss Pussycat and I tellya, it was a blast. I arrived carrying a big vase full of flowers because after the service, we had them all over the house, so I brought one of them. I was standing in line behind a few people so Elena, who was working the door, didn't see me until the guy in front of me moved and then she was shocked and happy. She yelled What are you doing here? and I put the flowers right next to her at the front. The gallery itself is pretty spacious and has a good sized stage and with a huge back yard where people were milling about talking. We immediately met some cool folks who we bummed cigs offa, and I talked with Greg who is in The Loto-Ball Show, and he said the Man was upstairs, so I slide up these stairs that go all the way up and walk into the kitchen and there he is ! cooking dinner. We chat for a while and then he says time to start the movie, so we go down and what begins is a delightful movie done with puppets called Trixie and the Tree Trunks about a rock band getting started and it was hilarious. Then the music played, and I ended up in one of the best pits in years. I didn't get to speak with them afterwards because Paul wanted to go; he had lost his cell phone and wanted to go back to the spot we were at before to look for it, and I was feeling a little woozy from the combo of champagne, whiskey and beer plus that 1/2 a Perc thrown in, but suffice it to say it was a very successful evening and I recommmend ANYONE in the Chicago area, or even a state over, to make the effort to see shows at this venue. Open Letter...
... To HotJobs, Monster, CareerBuilder, etc... FUCK YOU. I spent the last five fucking years floating my resumes through your systems and what did I get... A bunch of go-no-where shit labor jobs mined by the likes of the wireless sales community, job offers from penal correctional institutes, hundreds of hours of SPAM, Headhunters with their heads up their asses, Offers to attend on-line college classes, offers to join the fucking military and support the war in Iraq, countless offers to sell insurance like a dead stale husk, and additions into "personal groups" like "Horny Bikers want Buddies" or weird offers to stuff envelopes like some shit worker in India or Cambodia (with no hate meant toward my brown brothers in the Customer Service industry)... Fuck all you websites that drew web hits off of my resume. Fuck all you headhunters who would send me an email, and not pick up my calls. Fuck all the soul-less corporations who work on some sort of survey-generated "trustworthiness" algorithm. And most of all... Fuck me. Fuck me for giving in to the hype. I always knew it was a crap shoot. i really did. But when it comes down to it, I can only hope that all the dollars generated by your resource managers, traffic generated by the endless search advertising, and ridiculous banner ads will end up with all you fuckers going downhill. Feel free to post this message anywhere where it will get attention. Link it to yourself. Use the keyword metatag "motherfucker" if you want, for more search-ability. | | Thursday, June 21st, 2007 | 2:33 pm [atakra]
