Summary: Real!Jack looks back on his life as it is about to end.

His plane was on fire. He had engaged the enemy, led them away and ordered his men to fly back. He'd flown until he was sure all of his men were in safety. Only when he was certain of that he allowed himself to think of bailing. And found he couldn't. A few more frantic attempts, but the mechanism was stuck, wouldn't give. The plane was on fire and he couldn't get out. Panic rising he fumbled for the release of the hatch. No movement there either. The heat had deformed the material too much already.

He closed his eyes. Was this it? But weren't you supposed to see your life go by in a flash before you died? He tried to remember what was important to him, to distract himself from the heat and pain and to still his panic. But the images that rose in his mind weren't only the most significant moments of his life, nor were they ordered. He saw himself...

The day he enlisted in the army together with two school friends.

Smoking behind the gardener's shed on the school grounds aged fourteen.

Getting spanked for playing with his mother's lipstick.

The first boy he fancied.

The first girl that fancied him.

Fumbling when he could have made a touchdown.

Playing with his beloved dog.

Burying his dog, crying incosolably in his mother's arms.

Standing puzzled at his grandfather's grave with his family, too young to understand.

Flying into a clear blue sky, reveling in the beauty and freedom.

Eating hot dogs at a rodeo with his father and brother.

Getting into a fight on his twenty first birthday defending his brother.

Kissing Gus whom he hadn't even liked all that much.

Dancing with James, oblivious of his surroundings.

Holding James.

Kissing James.

He lingered there at the memory of this kiss he had shared only hours earlier with a man he had just met that night. It calmed him, comforted him through the unbearable pain and growing certainty of his death as if the other Captain was here with him now. Yes, he thought he could feel him sitting next to him, holding his hand, speaking quietly, soothingly.

He was going to die. But he was not alone.

Not beta-read because it was spontaneous. It took shape in my head while I was doing the stocktaking at work yesterday (and kept me from going mad out of sheer boredom).

I seem to have a writing block atm, so here's another artwork instead.

For the Weekly Challenge #48: The Life and Death of Captain Jack

It's a manip sized 1280x800, so if anyone likes it enough to want it as wallpaper, it fits widescreen.

It's the longest I've ever worked on a manip. Not sure if this is just a phase or if it means I'm getting my attention span back. ;-)

I'm currently working on something big and complicated that would fit the challenge too, but since it'll probably take longer than a week to finish, this is a sort-of place holder.

Summary: Sorry, this just sprang to my mind, even if somewhat late. ;) Owen makes a fool of himself, again.

The Torchwood staff was gathered around their big table, more or less finished with their takeaway meals and Ianto was already beginning to gather the discarded containers, reaching across the table. Jack had just left the room when Owen got up, slowly moving around the table so he stood directly across from Toshiko with his back to the door. He bent forward towards her with both hands on the table top and lowered his voice to a conspiratorial murmur: "Spill, Tosh, with how many guys was our Captain flirting while you were back in 1941? Don't spare us the details."

Toshiko gave him a disapproving look. "Even if he had, I wouldn't tell you."

"Don't be so prissy, he constantly does it in front of us, at every possible or impossible opportunity, so it's not like he's keeping his sex drive a secret. He must have at least tried to make out."

Gwen gave him a withering look.

Ianto rolled his eyes. "Drop it, OK?"

Toshiko's voice betrayed her own annoyance, but she tried not to snap at Owen. "He didn't do anything there! Remember, we were trying to get back, and we were in the middle of an air raid."

Owen leaned back with crossed arms, a satisfied smile on his lips. "Now I know you're lying. The words 'not doing anything' and 'Jack' don't figure in the same sentence. Like that guy we saw on the photos of you in the Ritz. You can't tell me he didn't try to chat him up, he's right up his alley! And he probably was too!" Owen laughed at his own joke, expectantly looking at the others to join in.

Silence.

"Come on, 'up his alley'! Don't you get it? That's bloody funny!" he demanded in exasperation, spreading his hands.

Icy silence. Tosh and Gwen exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Owen's face froze, the chuckle died in his throat, realization dawning. "He's standing right behind me, right?"

Four solemn nods.

"O-kay... " Owen slowly turned around to face Jack as four pairs of eyes were shifted to Jack.

Jack had his lips pursed and his arms crossed above his chest, he didn't look amused. "If I hear one more word about this from you," he said with a dangerously quiet voice as his icy gaze swept over his team and finally came to rest on Owen, "I'll have the lot of you retconned. And now I'm sure all of you have something important to look to."

After a short stunned silence everybody scrambled up and meekly filed out past Jack. Toshiko, being the last to leave the room, quickly glanced up at him and he nodded at her approvingly. So he had noticed that she hadn't blabbed she thought with relief.

When everybody was gone Jack shook his head with a wide grin.

There's bound to be a continuity problem in there, and it's unbeta'd, but still... Hope you like, and you know, feedback is love! :)
