Installing IRAF
I've been trying to get IRAF running on my laptop all day, and it's exactly as much of a headache as my officemates warned me it would be. That said, I've nearly got everything working, but I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice...

IRAF is installed and working more or less as it should be. The only thing I can't get working properly is XGterm (and splot doesn't work properly in any other terminal). I'm running a Mac Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.4 (Tiger). Has anyone else tried installing IRAF on OS X Tiger? Is the X11IRAF 1.3.1 package the latest version out, or is there a newer one with bug fixes out there somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT--
Specifically, I can now open an XGterm window, but can't type anything into it (so can't launch IRAF). On the one or two occasions when this window could be typed into, it closed again due to an error when I tried to plot a spectrum.

Strange.

I've managed it on Tiger without any problem. You've seen http://macsingularity.org/ I assume? It's what was maciraf.net.

Yeah, that's what I've been using as a guide. I have no idea why XGterm isn't working for me...

I'm to the party late, but you could try installing SciSoft from ESO. Their lovely package includes a kick butt easy install of IRAF and I've moved that way for my iMac and my Macbook.

SciSoft... Is that available for download?
I'll have to go and have a look for it, thank you! :D

Yep, the Mac version of SciSoft is available here:
http://web.mac.com/npirzkal/Scisoft/Scisoft.html

That's what I'm currently running on my iMac which runs Tiger as I haven't upgrade to Leopard yet (we have to get our "personal" household IDL license upgraded before I can do that).

bugger. . .and I just remembered- the version of ds9 with SciSoft is a bit old so you will want to grab the new one and shove it into /scisoft/bin once you've got scisoft installed or alias ds9 to wherever you have it installed.

Wonderful! Thank you very much!

(I have what I believe is the most recent version of DS9 already, so that's no problem... :)

It's on my todo list. Now I know where to go for help if it doesn't work.
