NASA to Announce Success of Long Galactic Hunt
WASHINGTON -- NASA has scheduled a media teleconference Wednesday, May 14, at 1 p.m. EDT, to announce the discovery of an object in our Galaxy astronomers have been hunting for more than 50 years. This finding was made by combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory with ground-based observations

are they being deliberately tight-lipped about what they've found or are they going to elaborate on something that's already known?

I don't think they're being tight-lipped out of malice, if that's what you're thinking. The press conference is probably timed to coincide with the publication of whatever discovery has been made in one of the big journals. You don't want to preempt them, & when you're going to do something this impressive, you're probably going to make sure that all the i's are dotted & all the t's are crossed.

seems odd to hold off such important news for a week! it better be good whatever it is. i vote for a back hole or little green men; whichever is more probable!

It would be highly improbable to find LGMs with the Chandra, unless they could harness energies at the level of stars.

Yeah, me too :) I blame credit Cosmos for the reason that I'm now studying to get in to uni next year to do a Bachelor of Science majoring in astronomy and astrophysics... >.>

My bet is actual confirmation - and maybe even a picture of the surrounding disc - of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the galaxy. Hurry up, Wednesday!!
