hello crafters!!!

it's time to meet for ACK again!

join us tomorrow, Thursday October 11, 2007 at about 8pm ish at Freeze Peach (www.freezepeach.org) for
another evening of crafting!

feel free to bring your current work in progress, or anything that you have finished recently-- we'd love
to check it out!

and be sure to post anything you'd love to show off and brag about on our blog :)

also-- i've updated the blog with our pumpkin picking extravaganza at the queens farm.

so, we were thinking-- let's carve pumpkins on October 21st, 2007 at my place-- time to be announced. if you
would like to attend, please respond so that i can notify you all of more details (such as my address)
and what to bring with you, etc.

if you did not pick pumpkins with us, you can still carve pumpkins with us! just pick your own pumpkin at
your favorite pumpkin patch, or a local supermarket  (i've seen a lot of nice pumpkins around....)

also, someone posted on our blog about an event that will be going on this weekend where you can pick
pumpkins:

"I am on the board of the Sunnyside Gardens Park located at 48-21 39th Avenue - just up from the Old
Navy and Toys R Us on Northern Blvd. We are a historical landmark 3 acre usually private member run
park. On Saturday 10/13 from noon until dark, we are turning the park into a PUMPKIN PATCH and hold an
Oktoberfest. We are open to the public this day and welcome all. This is a great family day and we will
have hundreds of pumpkins and plenty of fresh air. We're also having greenmarket vendors and arts and
crafts for the children. Pumpkin painting is free if you buy from the patch. I hope to meet plenty of my Astoria neighbors! "

*if you would like to learn how to knit or crochet, please bring your own materials (yarn, appropriate knitting needles, appropriate crochet hook) and someone in the group is bound to help you learn a new craft. if you do other crafts, please bring them along, we'd love to see what you are working on! If you would like to be put on the mailing list, please private message me with your email. thanks!*

hope to see you all tomorrow night!

are some pictures from spin out new york 2007 in central park, September 29, 2007 11am to 5pm ( http://www.spin-out.org )

table at Spin Out New York with pins, post cards, and handspun wool!

i went to this event with fellow ACK member Kim [info]crazykimmy

this was a really nice event. everyone gathered together at cherry tree hill in central park (near west 72nd street). when we got there, there were already dozens of people spinning with drop spindles, spinning on all sorts of spinning wheels, and spinning with all types of fibers, even yak. (yak! like that big huge animal who lives in the forest or something...) and of course, everyone was buzzing about their latest hand spun fiber, their wheels, their techniques, what's new... and on and on.

what really stuck out for me is that almost everyone there was very friendly and very eager to show us this hobby (addiction).

kim brought her cd drop spindle and was able to get a lot of help from several people who attended the event, here is ellen sullivan of Long Island

Ellen Sullivan is actually part of the Long Island Spinning Guild ( http://www.lispinning.com ) in Setauket, New York. Ellen was showing us how to get the hang of spinning with a drop spindle.

i ended up sitting next to Kim and next to a family of spinners. Robin and her daughter Lucy. Robin brought her own hand dyed wool and was carding it herself right in front of our eyes! while her 8 year old daughter was calmly spinning on the spinning wheel. maybe robin felt bad that i had nothing to work on... but she insisted that i practice on her drop spindle while she hand carded some of her wool for me! that was awfully nice of her! :)

here are kim and i practicing our drop spindling

after getting a hang of drop spindling, i asked Robin if i would be able to try spinning on her spinning wheel. Robin graciouslly allowed me on her spinning wheel. and she patiently showed me how to use her wheel. it was very different trying this... i had to use both my feet and control drafting the fiber... but i think i could get a hang of it. (this addiction is really getting stronger...)

here is Robin on her spinning wheel

Robin lives in Sunnyside, Queens.
here is her blog:

overall i twas a gorgeous day and i had a really good time chatting and spinning with other experienced spinners. we all should get together and do this again! :)
