YouTube Autism Video
I am honestly suprised that this has not been posted yet, unless I missed it, but the following youtube video is very interesting and I feel that everyone here will have thoughts on it:

To me, I feel that posting this video on youtube is good in that it reaches the masses. (who is more neurotypical than a NT Teenager really?) and educates them and makes them aware that simply because someone is rocking back and forth and stimming in 'odd' ways it does not mean they are not intelligent.

What he said is beyond the comprehension of NT teens.

She. A.M. Baggs is a she.

And I know several NT teens who would get it. They're not all jerks.

And she's a member of this community! Did she not post it to the community herself because she's modest? Because there's no sense in preaching to the choir? I'm certainly not going to second-guess her, but it's definitely a great video.

She posted it in her regular blog.

You can get the feed [info]ballastexistenz and keep up with her that way if you like.

Much appreciated. I prefer to go directly to people's blog/journal and read in the format they presented it in, but right now, anything that makes my use of computer time more efficient is very much appreciated, and that feed is definitely in that category.

I use the feeds to let me know when there are new blog entries, so I don't have to think about going anywhere but LJ. :) Saves on volition, which I really need for other things.

I didn't post it because I honestly didn't realize there was going to be a giant fuss about it, and because after the giant fuss began, I became quite self-conscious and wanted to mostly hide.

I'm not at all surprised. What can I say? You're a celebrity!— a hero! I know that that part of what you do doesn't feel right to you, but it follows inevitably from doing the rest so well.

I know I'm a cynic, but I have to agree with [info]samcurt. It seems that even the most empathetic teenagers would find this something to laugh over rather than take seriously. My younger sister is 17 and while she is an 'average' NT, she's actually a pretty good person. Yet I know this is the sort of thing she and her dumbass friends would laugh about...

I think the laughter - as an expression of discomfort and puzzlement - would come in the first half of the video when there's no speech or conventional meaning to what's happening. As soon as she starts explaining what's going on, my goodness this woman is impressive.

I've watched a few of her Youtube videos just now and it's given me a little idea of how my severely autistic niece might be seeing the world. She is also virtually speech-free.

My response on YouTube to the author.

Thank you for posting this. The video raised meaningful questions about how people define communication. I believe that the meaning of communication is the response the sender gets from making the communication. So I guess if the meaning you get from interacting with the water is the response of the water, then the response of the water is the meaning of your interaction with it. But my understanding of communication is different from my understanding of language. If I knock down a tree in the middle of the forest, I have communicated with the tree, but is knocking down a tree an act of language? I would have to be able to ask the tree.

Wow. That was awesome. I kept feeling myself getting drawn into rocking and singing along with and feeling things and wanting to be there again. I was there when I was a kid. Before they took my soul and told me I couldn't be that. Before I was taught it was defective to be that. To be me.

Amen.

I had sensory issues with some of the sounds at the beginning (metal scraping together can drive me to distraction), but the singing got more and more comforting as the video went on, and I found myself trying to rock (can't due to back problems:-( ) and starting to do my own singing, trilling, in response.

Conversely, my mostly NT nephew was instantly agitated by what he heard and got worse until it stopped and the words started.

The singing bothered me, too...but I am bothered whenever people hum or whistle without an obvious tune (or sometimes even when they have one). But the sensory things I could actually relate to somewhat.

There was a very good point about how it's silly to think of someone as retreating into their own world when they are manifestly interacting with the world all of the time (by touching, smelling, tasting it, etc.)-- obviously when someone makes such a comment, they really mean the very specific NT social world.

I think that there are so many reasons that a person could be unwilling or unable to speak, prone to rocking and other strange movements, etc. that people who aren't informed simply don't know what to expect about the mind of the person doing it. So the video is a strong reminder against assuming that people who don't talk, don't think. I'm passing it on.

I've passed it on as well, to the mother of my severely autistic (non-speech) niece in New Zealand. I hope she doesn't think I'm suggesting that my niece could hugely benefit from learning to type and communicate through artificial speech - that would be a very patronising act on my part - but I think the video is enormously valuable.
I liked the singing as soon as I realised it was purposeful rather than simply one or two notes.

Responding half a year later:

I loved the singing. It reminded me a lot of the Cherubic Hymn. This is sung in my church every Sunday (and every Orthodox church around the world) and is one of my favorite parts of the liturgy.

bmen.
that's amen part 2
thanks a ton for making this video, A.M.
my NT boss said it raised questions about what communication and language are
it did not do this for me
those terms should mean whatever the person using them wants them to mean
someone on the youtube comments thing asked how financially independent you are
this made my endless struggle with understanding where we fit in the world come to one question:
is it better to help someone be able to take care of him or herself (in all ways), or to let that person's personality remain entirely intact at all costs?
obviously my instinct is the latter
unfortunately, the world has a limited amount of financial resources
i am not going to ask whether you are financially independent, as i can probably find that out elsewhere
this also makes me wonder how prevalent your experience of the world is
a lot of people in this community have often said "help low functioning autistics as much as possible, but leave the aspies alone"
and i always took issue with that
because our comprehension of LFA is probably as poor as NTs comprehension of HFA
so i'm in no position to judge
anyway
thank you again
i had forgotten what life is like

I'm sorry, but I thought this video clip was hilarious. I laughed, and I don't laugh at much. I really am not a horribly insensitive person, but sometimes people aren't helping their cause when they make such a fool of themselves.

Yes, it means you are a chrome plated insensitive judgmental jerk, frankly. No better than some sheltered little republican NT child who thinks the world and everything should conform to their expectations. If you see Amanda as "making a fool of herself" by BEING herself, how does that make you different from all the right-wing ABA curebie fanatics, who would reather have a soul-dead (or institutionalized or really dead) child than an embarrassing one?
