How much time can you spend in a public (work) toilet?

At what point can you ask for your co-worker / subordinate to do some work and monitor their bathroom times?

Inspired by my co-worker who wanders off every half an hour, for an hour or more. I watched him walk out of the office at 3pm, its now 3.53 and there is no sign of him. He does not have friends in the building or any legitimate reason to be out of the office what so ever. The printer, fax and phone are all in our office. I am his boss, and he's been doing this for months. Every time I try to call him on it "omg your picking on a disabled person, I only have one hand" I don't care about his arm, there is nothing wrong with his mind.

What are some of the most powerful or moving photographs you've ever seen in your life? Pictures are supposed to be worth 1000 words, so there has to be some out there somewhere.

Cry Baby 2009-07-15 23:31:00
This question was inspired by a previous post.

I'm currently expecting (due in five weeks).  And I've been getting tons of advice, as this is my first baby.  My grandmother says that it's important to let a baby cry so that it's lungs will properly develop.

Sounds like BS to me - but frankly, I've got no experience.

So - what do you guys think?  Is there any truth to the idea?

TIA!

Take a sad song and make it better 2009-07-16 05:05:00
I'm looking for a certain type of a song and while my friendslist has been incredibly helpful I still need more suggestions.

I need a song with female vocals, a theme of loss (and possibly a tragedy in the past) but nothing to do with romance.

What song would you suggest?

(ps: please don't only post youtube links, I tend to not be able to open those and instead get this little gem of a message: "This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions." Bah! -_-)

So which camp are you in?

It's better to let a baby cry until it stops, so it learns to comfort itself.

It's better to pick up the baby and soothe it, because needing physical contact is a valid want, and is important to development.

If you get a soundproof, metal baby safe, it's not an issue.

This is not a poll for a reason, you silly pudding butts. :D (The truth is delicious.)

Etsy question 2009-07-15 23:03:00
I just started an Etsy account a few days ago, and I realized I don't know how to find out where to ship my orders. That is, if someone orders something, how do I find out what their address is? Do I just have to contact them? Sorry if this is stupid or obvious, but I am stumped.

novel writing site? 2009-07-15 20:22:00
I'm trying to write a novel, but my writing style sucks.  I'm not trying to make a masterpiece or anything, just something that isn't awful.  At the moment, it's all like "she said this, he said that", so it's very boring.  Do you know of any websites for first-time novelists, with tips for how to make your novel better?  Thanks!

Are you good with children? Does interacting with them feel natural and happy for you or would you prefer not to, if you had a choice?

If you have kids: were you always good with children before you had one of your own? If not, do you feel that you've become generally good with kids now after having them?

Backpacks! 2009-07-15 22:13:00
I haven't bought a backpack since I was, maybe, in 5th grade, generally talking solace in messenger bags and shoulder bags.

I'm studying abroad this fall and will need a backpack for general backpack/school needs as well as one that will suffice for hiking and trips that will last approx. 4 days (meaning it would need to be spacious enough to contain 4 days worth of clothes plus other things).

What are some backpacks you would recommend? What are some good brands to look for?
I'm looking for anything around $50 but probably nothing more than that.

I know, see a doctor, right? 2009-07-15 19:52:00
I get this summer/flu cold thing several times a summer. It's usually just a sore throat, sore muscles and a general malaise. When I sneeze a powerful ache goes through my body and my biceps/triceps/pectorals feel like they're pulling off the bone. Does anybody else get this? How long does it last with you?

I am seeing the doctor tomorrow.

Do you think parents should help pay for their child's college education, to the best of their abilities? This is assuming the child in question wants to go to college. Why or why not?

ETA: To clarify, by help I do not mean pay for the entirety of tuition necessarily. I was going for: should parents pay for at least a small part of their child's college education, assuming the child wants to go to college?

Last night at dinner, aunt asked me whether we would use paper towels or a "community rag" for napkins.

Have any of you ever used a community rag in place of napkins with your family or friends? It's  a small towel or rag that you pass around the table during meals to whoever needs to wipe their hands or face.

My family never used such a thing, but, as a child, I had meals with families that did. It sounds like my mother's family did that when she was growing up.

It's just so weird to me!

ETA: I think I should have said "community napkin" instead. I don't think my aunt has any understanding of the slang meaning of "rag."

A couple of months ago, NASA announced their 2010 fiscal year budget: $18.69 billion.

Taking the results of the space program in the past fifty-odd years into account, do you think it warrants that kind of expenditure in today's economy? What kind of progress, between research and other space excursions, would you expect in 2010 to justify spending nearly 19 billion dollars?

A friend of mine has been vegan since our junior year of highschool (2002), and is also one of the most strict vegans I've ever met in real life. She went almost every day to hand out leaflets, she put in a thing to go and intern at PETA, she threw a huge vegetarian festival where people from all over the country came to meet up and throw down.

Then yesterday I found out that last week she stopped being vegan. She didn't just go vegetarian, she's back to eating meat as well.

How would you feel towards a friend if they did something like this? I mean I'm not vegan so it's not that she's "against my cause" or something...but I'm really confused by this situation.

Because I can't get over the name of this band I have to ask this question...
At least 3 times a day I hear a commercial advertising certain bands that are coming to this area for concerts. There's one band that the announcer says in the 'serious, "this band rocks"' voice, Chickenfoot, that I can't help but laugh a little at every time I hear it.

SO, what's the funniest band name that you've ever heard of?

Weenie-head! 2009-07-15 15:47:00
One of my friends is in the 'baby name choosing' stage for her soon-to-be birthed fetus.

She mentioned that a few names people suggested might be fodder for namecalling, but I hold to the belief that ANY name can be fodder for namecalling, and if your name doesn't work, there are always the old standbys.

So, what kind of names did you get called as a kid?

Or, alternatively, what names did you call others?

My Answer )

Drawing classes for grownups and making your own talent. 2009-07-15 13:53:00
Do you think that it is possible to create artistic talent? Not nurture already existing talent, but rather built it from the ground up.

And, on that note, do art classes for adults exist? Not talking college level "sketch this naked person" classes, but like elementary level "this is how to draw a cat" kind of classes. Have you ever taken one? Did you find yourself improving or was it a waste of time?

If you had to ditch your entire eye-shadow collection for some reason, then rebuild your collection 1 or 2 colours at a time, what 2 colours would you start with?

I started with lilac and a light copper colour. Had to switch to an organic brand as pretty much everything else gives me an allergic reaction.

Wtf is this on my thumb? 2009-07-15 12:53:00
Wtf is this on my thumb? )
Plz excuse the hair. I just got out of the shower.

It's red and raised and it hurts. My dad says it's a wart, but I've googled it and it's not any kind of wart that I've found. I constantly have to wear a bandaid (I've been rockin' some sexy Transformer ones), because if I don't, the slightest rub against something makes it bleed a lot.

I tried that wart freeze off stuff a week ago, but it really hasn't done anything.

I didn't think it was a big enough deal to call the doctor about, but it's bugging me enough that I might do it anyway. Just thought I'd post here first to see if anyone has any idea what it is.

Hi to all,

my question is actually to gothic people, but anyone can answer.
Why do you call yourselves gothic? Does it have anything to do with the history of the gothics, or the east Germanic tribe that lived in the 2nd century? I'm not a gothic myself. Just an ordinary teen, but for some reason this question popped out of my head and I wont be able to rest until I get an answer. There are gothic people in my country too, I don't think they understand the meaning though. But then again, does it have a certain meaning?! And for some reason, well at least from what I see, they always look angry and never smile. Maybe I'm wrong but this is just from my observation. I think they're pretty cool, and not ordinary and boring like me,  but I don't understand them at all.

Thank you!

It's hot in Georgia, people! 2009-07-15 10:47:00
Do you wear deodorant or antiperspirant on a regular basis? If you answered no, can you explain why and if you use any, what alternative methods against becoming olfactory offensive do you use? I understand the argument about antiperspirants and the possible harm they can do due to the blocking of a natural function of the body, but it seems to me that there are enough "natural" and "herbal" and alternative methods of (offensive) body odor control (which do not block perspiration - only the growth of bacteria which causes the offensive odor) abounding that this argument is rendered null (in my opinion, of course).

This question came to my mind because my husband was telling me about a co-worker who refuses to do anything about his offensive body odor; please note that they work outdoors on electrical lines in the hot sun (sweat happens!) - often trapped in a confined space together. He won't wear deodorant or antiperspirant of any kind nor will he keep about him any alternative methods of body odor control (such as wet wipes, for instance, for keeping the odor causing bacterial growth to a minimum). Pretty much all of his co-workers have asked him to do something about it but he refuses, stating that "body odor is a naturally occurring thing and if anyone has a problem with it it's because they've been brainwashed by the media into thinking it's not".

Ok, I can sorta see both sides in that he shouldn't be forced into "conformation" of wearing deodorant if that's his choice, but I do also think there's a point at which it becomes more of an imposition upon those who have to endure his smelling "like a bag of rotten onions" all day long. What do you all think?

Do you do things that you don't really care for because it makes your partner happy?

I'm not talking about things you hate with a passion or make you uncomfortable, but rather things like go to a movie they're interested in that you think looks dumb or just generally participating or going to something that they're interested in that just isn't your cup of tea, like a sports game, the symphony/ballet, hobby they enjoy, etc. What is more important: you getting your way and doing what you want, knowing that it will disappoint them or your partner's happiness? (For the purpose of this question, they do the same for you).

My husband and I were thinking of visiting Ocean City, New Jersey before the summer is over.  The thing is, we know nothing about it.  It was just a whim.  We figured we might as well visit since we've never been.

Have any of you been?  Is it fun?  We have an 8 year old daughter.  Is it a fun place for children?  Are there any affordable and clean places to stay that you can recommend?  Would we be better off somewhere else on the Jersey Shore?

Yes, I have googled all of this info, but I'm asking You Guys because I trust what you have to say about things more than random internet people.

I'm acting as the chairperson for a fundraiser being put on by the girls' youth group (age 11-18) that I mentor. They're going to be selling Entertainment Books. They don't know this yet -- the original plan was determined by the adult advisory board. Now, as chairperson, I'm typing up a packet of information for them to have. So far, I have what we're selling, price and expected profit, along with order forms, but this is the first time I've done something like this, and I'm not sure what other information would be helpful for them to have. Any suggestions? Parents with kids who have been asked to do selling fundraisers for school or clubs, what information do you want them to bring home?

Dictate my life, AMA! 2009-07-14 18:14:00
Six years ago, I applied for what looked like the perfect job for me. I had all the skills they asked for in their ad, or at least I thought I did. It turned out, though, that what they hadn't mentioned in their ad was that they wanted someone with management experience, which I didn't have. So I didn't get the job. However, they liked me enough that they kept my résumé, and six months later they called me and asked if I'd cover for another one of their employees who was on maternity leave, and I did so for almost a year. I really liked working for these people, and they gave me a little party on my last day.

Anyway, I'm now job-hunting, and this company is again advertising for help. The ad they posted is almost identical to the ad I answered six years ago. They still don't mention that they want someone with management experience; however, if it's the exact same job that I applied for six years ago, then they will want someone with management experience. I fit almost all of the qualifications; the only skill I don't have, other than the management experience that they don't mention in the ad, is the ability to troubleshoot computer problems and make minor computer repairs.

I'm now really torn about whether I should apply or not. I would love to work for this company again; they're very nice people, the pay is better than most of the other jobs I've applied for, and I already know most of the job, so I wouldn't need much training. However, I still don't have the management experience they asked for last time, and I don't have the technical skills they ask for, either.

Half of me is saying I should apply anyway. If I don't apply, I definitely don't have any chance of getting the job, whereas if I do apply, I at least have a chance, no matter how small. But the other half is saying that I shouldn't apply if I don't have the skills they ask for, and that I don't want to apply, get my hopes up, and be disappointed.

Should I apply, or shouldn't I?
