I'm moving into an apartment around January 28th-ish, but between December 20th and then, the apartment is going to be pretty much empty. My friend who has the apartment now is going back home right after graduating, and I'll be pretty much in charge of this place during the month it's empty. My plan is to drop by about once a week to check up on the place until I'm ready to move in (its a much shorter drive for me than for my friend). This has all been agreed upon, and the landlord is fine with it.
In all of my previous apartments, it's been included in the lease that you are required to keep the apartment at a certain temperature during winter, to avoid freezing pipes and the like. However, my friend has informed me that the apartment is really bad at retaining heat. Even with plastic over the windows, the heater (electric baseboard if I recall correctly) heats barely more than the corner under the window, and with the thermostat at 60* the heater is constantly running.
I know about running a trickle of water to keep the pipes from freezing, but the landlord pays the water bill and I fear that if theydrop by to check on the place (they only need to put a note on the door for their 24-hour notice, and I won't be there to see it), they might see the running water and they'll turn it off.
Can you, the wise people of AMA, give me any better ideas on how to keep the apartment at a non-frozen temperature without breaking my wallet before I even move in? Thanks <3

Does anyone here have experience on designing a stage / set? How does one go about it?
A couple of friends and I have been assigned to come up with a design proposal for a festival next month. While I can visualize in my head, we do need to present something... so, do we make a model, or do we make a sketch? We are completely clueless on the technicalities, so any input would be great!

SIL informed me of a proposition she had for me.
She returns to work Monday. She needs someone to watch one of her children for two days a week, and get the older one off to school, and back from school those same two days. Youngest is 5, oldest is 7.
I would be able to take the youngest with me to do errands/etc. Currently, I do not have a drivers license. With my next check I will be able to pay off my debt, and get it back. I would have to take the youngest to my house, which isnt kid friendly (four dogs, too much clutter, no kids toys/movies, nowhere for kid to play outside). She is willing to pay me $125 a week for these two days.
I know the kids fairly well, and have watched them several times, but only for about 3 hours at a time. I have never babysat before this, I do not know CPR, I do not even know how to discipline children. Oh, heres the kicker, I am 36 weeks pregnant. I am dog tired after 12pm, my back hurts, I get emotional/anxious/frustrated way too easily...I will not be able to do this after the baby is born, not even after 6 weeks. I just dont want to devote my time or energy to anything else besides my son. So the longest I would be able to watch her kids is ... 6 weeks
I have pretty much made my mind up that I wont be able to watch them. Would you? Also, how can I tell her? She is a great person, but is very unorganized. Had she asked me this a month or two ago, there is a possibility I would have said yes.

How would you react if your government instigated a one-child policy?
By that I mean a one-birth-child. You can adopt as many as you like.
ETA: The reasons for implementing the scheme are to reduce the population. Say it occurs 50 years in the future when demand for food and water has out-grown supply.

Starting tomorrow, there's almost no gravity on Earth. The Earth will still orbit the Sun as usual, don't worry. I don't know how it works either: don't ask questions. There's just enough gravity to keep people from accidentally floating out into space, but gravity is virtually zero. People can now effortlessly jump from place to place and the game of basketball looks more like Quidditch.
10 or 20 years from now when you're telling stories to your young child (or grandchild (or great-grandchild)), how will you explain what it was like to live under constant gravity? What will be your most amusing gravity-related story that'll make them say "no way! You made that up!"? How would you respond when they say "how did people get around? That must have been such a drag!"?

I accidentally deleted all the photos off my SDHC card earlier today. I was able to get all the pictures off and save them to my laptop, but now I'd like to put them back on the card. When you were a kid and played pretend games based on existing media, did you always play the roles that corrisponded with your gender? Did it matter whether the group was all the same gender or a mixed batch? Are you a guy or a girl (whatever you identified as or were seen as as a kid, really)?
My answer: I really only played with boys and I always had to play some stupid girl character. If it was Ninja Turtles, I was April, if it was Ghost Busters I was that chick from the movies that Peter was banging, if it was wrestling I was some random girl character the boys picked for me. If it was Mario I was Princess Peach/Daisy. The odd thing was that, at one school I went to, I always had to be whatever the love interest was for the character one of the boys played, ha. But yeah, usually I had to be some girl who ended up just sitting around to be rescued because I was called weird if I wanted to play a boy character (and even when I was a superhero, I ended up having to be rescued). When I played with other girls we were all female characters as well, but changed them so that we were the heroes. I want to think this was because we were awesome and self actualized and not because, with the lack of boys, there was no one to rescue us so we couldn't default to those games, but I'm not so sure. At least on the behalf of the other girls. I was playing that way because it was a hell of a lot more fun to be Batgirl who kicks ass over Batgirl who is saved by Robin.

A gay man offers his sperm to a lesbian couple so they can have a baby. The understanding is that the two women are the parents of the baby, while the man will play the role of 'uncle'. Nothing is on paper, it's a verbal agreement.
Unfortunately after a few years (so the man and the child have formed a bond as 'uncle' and 'nephew/niece') the man and the couple argue, they end their friendship on bad terms. The couple wish to move abroad with the child.
Does the man have any rights to see the child?

Does anyone know how they keep the "parts" apart in movie love scenes?
I would expect that if Nichole Kidman or Sharon Stone is in a love scene they aren't actually fucking, but sometimes, there are no sheets or anything covering up the hips, so is there like, a little sack that the dude puts his meat and potatoes in? Or like, what if it comes off because dude gets a stiffy? I mean me personally, I have gotten raging hard ons just watching some love scenes, much less trying to participate in one.
