New Zealand authors

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Association of New Zealand (SFFANZ) has
started a project to collate and list as much science
fiction/fantasy/horror works by New Zealanders as it can trace.

The best way to achieve this is for those New Zealanders who produce
these sorts of works to provide SFFANZ with the appropriate listing
material themselves. After all, who else knows better when and where a
work was published.

For the moment the listing of works (for want of a better name) is
being managed by Alan Robson.

The current listing of works can be viewed at www.sffanz.org.nz - I
hope the trail to the listings is obvious.

I would be most pleased if you passed on this informal announcement to
them and other Kiwis you know who have written professionally.

Tin Ducks open for voting!

Voting for the 2008 Tin Ducks is now Open!

Ballot forms can be downloaded from www.swancon.com/tinducks.

The awards ceremony for the presentation of the Tin Ducks (as well as the Ditmars and WASFF awards) is to be held on the Sunday evening of Swancon (March 23). Exact time has yet to be confirmed.

Any queries on the ceremony or the Tin Ducks can be directed to Ju (</a></a>mynxii).

Completed ballots may be emailed to tinducks@swancon.com, or mailed to Tin Ducks Awards Committee, PO Box 555, Inglewood WA 6932.

Posted ballots need to be postmarked no later than 17th March 2008. Alternatively, completed ballots may be placed in the ballot box in the Registration Area of the Convention before 5pm, Saturday 22nd March 2008. Voting is open to full and supporting members of Swancon.

Voting is by Optional Preferential Voting.

Mark as many boxes, as you wish in each category, in the order of your preference, 1 being your first choice. You do not have to number every box. The Tin Duck Committee reserves the right to make further decision on the validity of nominees. Ballot form must be clearly signed by the voter. Unsigned forms will not be counted! Only one ballot form per person.

Recent discussions have made it completely obvious that people think that there are many problems with the current Ditmar guidelines.

To promote discussion, I've created a googlegroup where interested parties can request membership (membership only denied if you're an evil spammer) and debate these in a fairly relaxed forum that will hopefully avoid the misunderstandings that can come from public debate.

I would like to state that I'm not intending to use this to force, push or promote any agendas I may have, but to be a fairly neutral host and moderate thoughtful discussion among others who do have definite ideas and opinions on these awards.

Andromeda Spaceways is re-open for submissions! The annual hiatus when we permit out slushreaders to go forth and graze peacefully of the reading material in the world in order to refresh themselves for the gruelling year of slush reading ahead is over!

You may have noticed a discrepancy on the ASIM website regarding the re-opening date - we have now spoken sternly with the gremlins on the webpage, and do ask that any stories submitted between January 15 and January 31 PLEASE BE RESUBMITTED!

Remember, if you don't receive a tracking number in a timely manner, it's likely we didn't receive your submission.

Andromeda Spaceways Co-op members Simon Petrie and Tehani Wessely could be considered eligible in Best New Talent category this year (Simon has had many fiction pieces published, and a number of reviews in various places. Tehani is a founding member of ASIM, edited two issue in 2007 and compiled the three Best Of Anthologies). So could our authors
Matthew Churlew and JJ (JESS) Irwin.

Might I also recommend nominating the Andromeda Spaceways Publishing Co-operative Ltd for the Best Professional Achievement Award (issues 27-31 in 2007, three electronic Best Of anthologies, publication of one and quarter million words of fiction since 2002).

We have five issues eligible for the Collected Work, but it could be done as ONE nomination - Andromeda Spaceways Inflight
Magazine issue 27 to 31.

Being totally immodest you might also consider nominating Tehani Wessely for Best Fan Achievement for work with ASIM.

Ian Nichols is eligible for the William Atheling award (30 years of reviewing and criticism).

RARE opportunity for back issues!

Archaeologists recently unearthed some RARE back issue copies of Andromeda Spaceways. Included among them was one solitary copy of the launch issue, ASIM #1. This is now up for auction at eBay, so if you are missing issue 1 from your collection, this may be your last chance to fill in the blanks!

Also coming up are copies of issues 10, 11, 12, 17 and 20, all previously thought to be sold out. Issues 11 and 17 in particular are multi award winners, so if you’re missing them, don’t miss out here!

Also, the Sir Julius Vogel award nominations close real soon. These are for eligible NZ citizens of the speculative fiction persuasion for works released in 2007. Nominations close (somewhat ironically for an New Zealand award) on Australia Day, January 26.
