Issue 33 review

The nice folk over at The Fix Online have reviewed ASIM 33. Why yes, it IS out - didn't you know? Issue 34 too. Oh, sorry, did we forget to mention? Ooops...

Stayed tuned for the official issue 33 and 34 press release/s - aliens have been randomly abducting Co-op members leading to miscellaneous breakdowns in the usually very streamlined process of issue releases! For now, you can check the new mags out in print and PDF over at Andromeda Spaceways!

New Zealand authors

Via Simon Litten ( littenz):

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Association of New Zealand (SFFANZ) has
started a project to collate and list as much science
fiction/fantasy/horror works by New Zealanders as it can trace.

The best way to achieve this is for those New Zealanders who produce
these sorts of works to provide SFFANZ with the appropriate listing
material themselves. After all, who else knows better when and where a
work was published.

For the moment the listing of works (for want of a better name) is
being managed by Alan Robson.

The current listing of works can be viewed at www.sffanz.org.nz - I
hope the trail to the listings is obvious.

I would be most pleased if you passed on this informal announcement to
them and other Kiwis you know who have written professionally.

See you at Swancon!

Before you all pack your suitcasies and go get on your planes, I must remind you to leave a bit of spare space in your carryons for all the carry homes you'll pick up if you visit the Small Press table at Swancon. We're far too big to be contained just to the market day, so instead we've arranged a full time table where you'll be able to pick up, at any time (during the day) during Swancon:

* all the ASIM you want;
* 2012;
* The Workers Paradise;
* Fantastic Wonder Stories;
* Daikaiju 3, Shadowplays;
* Shiny 2007 Trio;
* Magic Dirt;
* C0ck;
* Borderlands 9; and
* a whole tonne of Mirrordanse books - including a special deal for the first 3 volumes of the Aust Best Of Series.

You might also find other bits and pieces like jewellery and ASIM merchandise that you just can't miss out on!

Congratulations to Chris Barnes and Marissa Lingen whose stories in ASIM issue 28 have been recognised on Dave Truesdale's Recommended Reading List for 2007!

http://www.blackgate.com/articles/years_best_2007.htm

Interestingly, the ASIM cover right at the TOP of the page is actually the issue 29 cover (which has issue 28 written on it!) :)

Ditmar Voting

This is a special notice for anyone who is eligible to vote for the Ditmars this year (ie: members and supporting members of Convergence 2007 and Swancon 2008). Don't vote yet!

</a></b></a>girliejones and I (asimmum ) are pulling together a package of all shortlisted materials, as best that we can manage, including links to online material/websites of nominated works, and full copy of art and story material, which we will then make available to ALL voting members. Lots of people don't get the opportunity to see a lot of the works on the shortlist, so we're trying to help make that informed choice a bit easier for folks!

So keep an eye on your inbox in the next few days, as the package will be winging its way out as soon as we can get it all together!

Now's your chance to participate in the process of change!

via </a></font></b></a>punkrocker1991

Recent discussions have made it completely obvious that people think that there are many problems with the current Ditmar guidelines.

To promote discussion, I've created a googlegroup where interested parties can request membership (membership only denied if you're an evil spammer) and debate these in a fairly relaxed forum that will hopefully avoid the misunderstandings that can come from public debate.

I would like to state that I'm not intending to use this to force, push or promote any agendas I may have, but to be a fairly neutral host and moderate thoughtful discussion among others who do have definite ideas and opinions on these awards.

I will moderate this where necessary, but my goal is to promote constructive debate. For more info go here:

http://groups.google.com/group/ditmar-amendments2008?hl=en

Russell B Farr

Andromeda Spaceways is re-open for submissions! The annual hiatus when we permit out slushreaders to go forth and graze peacefully of the reading material in the world in order to refresh themselves for the gruelling year of slush reading ahead is over!

You may have noticed a discrepancy on the ASIM website regarding the re-opening date - we have now spoken sternly with the gremlins on the webpage, and do ask that any stories submitted between January 15 and January 31 PLEASE BE RESUBMITTED!

Remember, if you don't receive a tracking number in a timely manner, it's likely we didn't receive your submission.

Tehani is a founding member of ASIM, edited two issue in 2007 and compiled the three Best Of Anthologies). So could our authors
Matthew Churlew and JJ (JESS) Irwin.

Might I also recommend nominating the Andromeda Spaceways Publishing Co-operative Ltd for the Best Professional Achievement Award (issues 27-31 in 2007, three electronic Best Of anthologies, publication of one and quarter million words of fiction since 2002).

We have five issues eligible for the Collected Work, but it could be done as ONE nomination - Andromeda Spaceways Inflight
Magazine issue 27 to 31.

Being totally immodest you might also consider nominating Tehani Wessely for Best Fan Achievement for work with ASIM.

Ian Nichols is eligible for the William Atheling award (30 years of reviewing and criticism).

Please note - this post is simply to let you know what ASIM is eligible for. There are many other worthy nominees in the Australian SF scene and we ask you to consider your nominations carefully as a whole.

RARE opportunity for back issues!

Archaeologists recently unearthed some RARE back issue copies of Andromeda Spaceways. Included among them was one solitary copy of the launch issue, ASIM #1. This is now up for auction at eBay, so if you are missing issue 1 from your collection, this may be your last chance to fill in the blanks!

Also coming up are copies of issues 10, 11, 12, 17 and 20, all previously thought to be sold out. Issues 11 and 17 in particular are multi award winners, so if you’re missing them, don’t miss out here!

Issue #1 is on auction NOW at eBay, Item number: 130188135753

Awards and things

The Preditors and Editors Reader's Poll is now open for nominating/voting. ASIM has a few nominations in, and some ASIM friends too, so why not pop on over and have a browse?

http://www.critters.org/predpoll/

Also, the Sir Julius Vogel award nominations close real soon. These are for eligible NZ citizens of the speculative fiction persuasion for works released in 2007. Nominations close (somewhat ironically for an New Zealand award) on Australia Day, January 26.

http://sffanz.sf.org.nz/sjv/sjvAwards.shtml

The awards season for 2008 has now begun!
