| About: | Welcome to Asian_Fetish. It's NOT what you think. In fact, it's probably the opposite. The idea here is to get past the stereotypes of lonely old men sending away for an Asian Mail Order Bride, or the geeky anime fanboy who wants a Japanese girlfriend who can translate for him, and get to the reality. These stereotypes need to be examined, and deconstructed, and eventually set aside - including the stereotype that such relationships are ONLY between Caucasian men and Asian women. Non-asians who express an interest in having relationships with Asians are sometimes unfairly accused of having a "Fetish" for them, where the person is more interested in the other person's "Asianness" or imagined universal traits than in the actual person as a person. (Alas, some people ARE fairly accused of this. Hopefully, with a dose of reality, we can help them.) There are much more healthy ways for two different people to get together. There are lots of communities on LiveJournal concerned with interracial relationships, this one is concerned with those between asians and non-asians of all kinds It is hoped that this Community can help BOTH sides gain a better understanding. That Asians can come to see that not everyone who expresses an interest in them is some kind of Fetishist, and that Non-asians can better understand the issues around dating Asians. As with any discussion of racial issues, it's understandable that debates can become heated, and tempers can flare. Everyone can have an occasional lapse, but it's usually counterproductive. Someone who is serially nasty might force the moderator to have to do actual work. One additional point. Experience has shown that it is very important to distinguish between physical/genetic characteristics of race (Call it Phenotype) and culture. To avoid misunderstanding when referring to this, be careful to make clear that you are talking about one or the other, and don't confuse the two. | |
