Your result for The Steampunk Archetype Test... The Crazy Clockwork Tinkerer
What is life? If something simulates life so well that no one knows that it is simulated and treats it like it were alive, would that be just like life? And if you were the one to create this simulated life, would that make you a god of some sort? Quite possibly, and that may be one of the many motivations behind your projects. Your clockwork mechanisms started off simple and cute, but as you attempted to replicate life in your machines, you created bigger mechanisms, golems of gears, that do your bidding. You are a genius, but a crazy genius. Take The Steampunk Archetype Test at HelloQuizzy |

THIS is what Joss Wheadon's doing right now. Stars Neal Patrick Harris as an up-and-coming Mad Scientist, and Nathan Fillion as his Superhero rival.
And it's a Musical!
You must Must MUST Watch this.
Oh, and you must Watch this before all three parts go away forever at Midnight on Sunday (Well, to reappear on iTunes or eventually a DVD. But that will cost some money.) |

Jesse Jackson. Again.
*facepalm*
I don't care if you use the word "nigger," Jesse, but there's a weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee bit of cognitive dissonance when you use it more or less in the same breath as you do putting down Barack Obama for talking down to Black people.
Sit down and shut up already, Jesse. Yes, you are no longer the Important Black Man. Your sour grapes are showing along with your ass, so kindly put both of them away, because they are unseemly.
...and honestly, Jesse. You say this on Fox of all places?! That's just special right there. |

A very disappointed tool review
I might have mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I bought a replacement for my Porter Cable VS333 Random Orbital Sander. I might have also mentioned that the new model, the 343 was different. And not necessarily in a good way.
Well, this weekend I found out just how not good. I recall expressing some doubts because a certain part was plastic in the new model. Those doubts were well founded, because within 15 minutes of use, somehow the pad or the bearing became so hot, the screws melted out of the plastic "Bell" and the pad fell off.
There was no point in trying to swap parts with the 333, they weren't compatible. Instead, and ran it back to Lowes and bought the DeWalt, which LOOKS almost identical, but definitely has some different internals, including a metal "Bell", and improved dust collection (Well, it would be improved, but I don't have a 5 hole pad any more thanks to the 343.) It also seems to run a bit smoother.
Porter Cable has a great reputation for certain tools, like their Routers and their Biscuit Joiner. And the Random Orbit Sander USED to be on that list. But not any more.
We'll just have to see how the DeWalt holds up. |

[Jul. 15th, 2008|06:02 pm] |
Here are my favorite tanka from the examples we read in class from Machi Tawara's Salad Anniversary. After the first two, the English translations aren't given, so they are my own translations. ^^ I'll try to keep it as accurate and poetic as possible. Forgive me when they're not as Lyrical as the original tanka is, though.
「この味がいいね」と君が言ったから 七月六日はサラダ記念日 ”This tastes great," you said、 and so The sixth of July is our Salad Anniversary
Writing on the blackboard, I pause to rest my hand-- in those seconds think meltingly of you.
Arriving at the train station one minute early Is one minute thinking of you.
It is becoming that type of winter In which I put on a green sweater That feels like your clinging embrace
It's cold, isn't it?" There is much warmth in the one who answers, ”Yes, it is cold."
Is it really alright to say, ”Be my wife," After drinking two cans of beer?
Like the last graceful movements of the retreating waves, Always alright to say, "Goodbye". |

[Jul. 15th, 2008|05:27 pm] |
This is continuing from my last entry, in which I mentioned learning about tanka from the Hyakunin Isshu and Salad Anniversary collections, and I wanted to share with you my favorite tankas that we read in class. I often picked them because they made me think of Daniel, and I wanted to share these with him for our anniversary. If we have any tanka/ poetry fans here, you can share your thoughts on these!
The following are from the Hyakunin Isshu:
花のいろはうつりにけりないたづらにわが身世にふるなかめせしまに小野小町 Cherry blossoms pale after long rain, beauty useless; I live in a world drained of color without you.Ono no Komachi
People may change, I suppose, but in my home town The flowers are bright as ever, their fragrance as sweetKi no Tsurayuki
I try but I can't quite hide how I feel、 Everyone asks me, Are you in love?Taira no Kanemori
I tried to hide by heart but the word is out: Too early love has lost the cover of silence.Mibu no Tadami
Before we loved and met, my life was less Lost in sad thoughts, my heart less torn by longingMiddle Counselor Fujiwara no Atsutada
Back when I longed for you, my life meant nothing. Now that we've met, I wish for long life in love.Fujiwara no Yoshitaka |

| Tanka
[Jul. 15th, 2008|04:59 pm] |
Today we have begun our second term, in which we will be studying classic Japanese poetry and literature <3 We started by being introduced to the 百人一首、Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of 100 poems by 100 famous poets from the 6c. - 13c. 700 year span, all of these selected by famous poet Fujiwara no Sadaie, also known as Teika. I noticed that how the poets are named are like "___ no ___", just as Fujiwara no Sadaie is. Also, a lot of the poets are other Fujiwaras, Emporers and Empresses, and other shared names as well such as several Ki no's, Mibu no's, and Abe no's.
I've heard of this Hyakunin Isshu before. It was made into a memorization card game (often played during New Year's) that every Japanese person is made to memorize since their elementary school. In high school, there are major comptetitions that go up to the national level, and it is taken very seriously. There are also fancier versions of the cards, such as the tankas being written on big, glossy seashells. I think eventually, I will have me a set of these cards <3
Since the kanji for tanka goes like this: 短歌, you may notice that the second character is that of "song". Sensei gave us an example of how a tanka was supposed to be sung, in an almost chantlike manner that emphasizes the 5-7-5-7-7 syllabic rhythm and musicality revered in traditional tanka. It was very interesting to listen to!
With this background, we were also introduced to the contemporary works of poet Machi Tawara who made a name for herself in the 80's (she was 26) with her all-time bestselling books of tanka poetry, often using contemporary themes and situations that many can relate to, while at the same time preserving many traditional tanka aspects such as old-timey words and connectors. Her most famous book Salad Anniversary, created a nationwide "Salad Phenomenon" in which thousands of people got into writing their own tanka poetry, often sending them to Ms. Tawara in letters. We read and discussed some examples of her tanka in class, as well as some of the Hyakunin Isshu ones, and we picked some of our favorites. I think, in a following entry, I will share of my favorite tankas, and perhaps be inspired to write my own. I very well should, though, because our assignment is to write two tanka by tomorrow XD |

[Jul. 15th, 2008|02:44 pm] |
ain't it?
it's so hard to describe what state i am in right now. it's all a big blob of confusion, boredom, curiosity, anxiety, depression, optimism, pessimism, and hopelessness all wrapped in a big towel of anger. i feel like i am the epitome of teenage angst right now.
i never do what i intend to do, or do as what i have said to do. i can and should, but i have not and will not; no motivation.
a couple of new friends have entered the picture which is nice, but then again a few have also disappeared. it takes me time to trust and get comfortable with people, so new ones never do make up for the old ones. it's very sad how sometimes people drift apart no matter how hard you try to stay in sync. |

I have the new Squeenix horror game for the DS, "Nanashi no geemu." And all I have to say is this.
OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!! *hides*
I'm only about 30 minutes in and this thing in managing to scare the shit out of me. It's the little, creepy-ass touches. Like when the game-within-a-game loses its sound and goes dead silent instead of cheesy midi. It may sound like nothing, but trust me, GAH!
God, I love Japanese horror.
...bed now. |
