| The 8 Limbs of Yoga |

source: http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/yoga-and-health/yoga-lifestyle.asp
lisa's note: this isn't necessarily a part of a pagan's practice, but due to the simple fact that i am influenced by yoga, hinduism & eastern spiritualities, i am including this in my grimoire.
The practice of Yoga does not only focus on physical postures to improve the body, but deals with all the aspects of our being and our lives. C.E., Patanjali who is considered the father of Modern Yoga compiled 195 aphorisms which are called the Yoga Sutra. In the Yoga Sutra, he described the eight aspects of a Yogic Lifestyle and called it the Eight Limbs of Yoga. The limbs are practical guides to a person's personal development to achieve the harmony of the mind, the body and the spirit which leads to Samadhi or enlightenment.
Yamas: Your attitude towards others and the world around you. There are five Yamas:
1. Ahimsa or non-violence. This Yama does not only mean not doing harm to others in thought and in deed, but also to practice acts of kindness to other creatures and to one's own self.
2. Satya or truthfulness. Satya is the Yama that is about living a truthful life without doing harm to others. To practice Satya, one must think before he speaks and consider the consequence of his action. If the truth could harm others, it might be better to keep silent.
3. Asteya or non-stealing. This Yama is not only concerned about the non-stealing of material objects but also the stealing of other's ideas and other forms of possession. Using power for selfish motives or telling someone else about confidential information you had been entrusted with is against Asteya.
4. Bramacharya or non-lust. Bramacharya means to move toward the essential truth or to achieve self-control, abstinence or moderation especially regarding to sexual activity. It is about not giving in to our ego's excessive desires or taking nothing in excess.
5. Aparigraha or non-possessiveness. This Yama is about living a life free from greed or taking only what is necessary and do not take advantage of someone or of a situation. It is about using our powers correctly and appropriately and not exploiting others.
Niyamas: How you treat yourself or your attitude towards yourself. The following are the five Niyamas:
1. Sauca or cleanliness. This Niyama is concerned on both the outer and inner cleanliness. The practice of pranayamas, asanas and Yogic cleansing practices to detoxify and cleanse the physical body are necessary to achieve inner cleanliness. The mind must also be kept clean or pure. Outer cleanliness, on the other hand, means to keep an clean environment or surroundings.
2. Santosha or contentment. Santosha is to practice humility, modesty and finding contentment with what you have and who you are.
3. Tapas or austerity. This Niyama refers to keeping the body in good condition. Tapas is practiced through disciplining the body, speech and mind like eating only when hungry and maintaining a good posture.
4. Svadhyaya or study of the sacred text and of one's self. This involved studying one's self, self-inquiry and self-examination and other things that can help you get to know yourself more. As your knowledge about yourself grows deeper, so is your connection to the higher power and your union with all things.
5. Isvarapranidhama or living with an awareness of the Divine. This Niyama encourages us to let go of our false sense of control and to connect to the Divine or that which gives us the sense of wholeness and sacredness.
Asanas or Physical Poses The Asanas are designed to free our mind and body from tension and stress. It relaxes, rejuvenates, and energizes the body and aims to bring the body and the mind into a harmonious union. Asanas should be done with comfort, ease, alertness and steadiness, achieving a balance between ease and effort.
Pranayama or Breathing Exercises Pranayama is the control of breath. The breath is regulated and controlled through the practice of breathing exercises. The duration of inhalation, retention, and exhalation of breath is regulated with the aim of strengthening and cleansing the nervous system and increasing a person's source of life energy. Pranayama practice also makes the mind calmer and more focused.
Prathayara or Withdrawal of the Senses This occurs during meditation, pranayama or asana wherein you are so focused and immersed on your Yoga, Meditation or Breathing Pose that you become unaware of outside situations. Your focus becomes inward and you are no longer distracted by outside events.
Dharana or Concentration Dharana is training the mind to focus without any distraction. To achieve this, you can focus your mind into an object at a time. This can also serve as a preparation for meditation.
Dhyana or Meditation Meditation is the practice by which there is constant observation of the mind. It means focusing the mind on one point, stilling the mind in order to perceive the Self. It is an uninterrupted flow of concentration aimed to heighten one's awareness and oneness with the universe. It is also an important tool to achieve mental clarity and Health.
Samadhi or Enlightenment This is the ultimate goal of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. It is characterized by the state of ecstasy and the feeling that you and the universe are one. It is a state of peace and completion, awareness and compassion with detachment.
The practice of Yoga does not only deal with developing the body but also covers all the aspect of a person's life as stated in the Eight Limbs of Yoga. It is concerned about the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of an individual as well as his environment and relationship with other creatures. Real practice of these eight principles leads to deeper self-knowledge, love and respect towards other people and creatures, cleaner environment, healthy diet, and union with the Divine. |

| | calm | ] | Oooh, I found a clip of "Libiamo" from the Detroit Opera House production of 'La Traviata' I went to (for free!) with Matt back in May or whenever the heck that was...
Btw, since today is payday I splurged on one thing - a $25 ticket to the Broadway Sings the 80's event at Joe's Pub the Sunday after I arrive in NYC, August 10th! :D It's gonna be peeps like Anthony Rapp, Eden Espinosa and such, and I figured there's no better way to celebrate my arrival in NYC than Broadway stars singing 80's music! ( charmedgirl, I think I saw that you might be going too??) I've always read about all these Joe's Pub events for YEARS and wanted to go, and now I finally can! I totally have to see the free Shakespeare In The Park prod. of "Hair" too, fo' shizzle... |

| | geeky | ] | I just remembered that today is the debut of Act 2 of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," yes!! :) Watching it now...and loving it even more than the first, I think...and Joss is actually a pretty damn good songwriter imho, by the way. (Although I guess we knew that from "Once More, With Feeling"!)
I have real life stuff I could post about (although nothing earth-shattering, I guess), but for some reason I don't really feel like it right now. Dunno why... *shrug* I'm not in a bad mood or anything, quite the opposite actually! :D
Part of me is starting to feel really sad about people and things I'm going to leave behind here though, even though I'm so alone here...I guess I'm not totally friendless after all. So now I feel this desperate need/urge to spend time with and connect with all the people here that I do like...and it's too sad and weird to think of not seeing any of them again. (Unless they come visit me in the Big Apple, of course!!) And today as I walked through the Art Fair, it felt so strange to think that this will be my last Art Fair, as a local certainly. And I don't even really like Art Fair much anymore, lol! But I still feel nostalgic for it now, and I will miss it.
P.S. I went to Arbor Opera's free recital tonight, and it was absolutely fantastic. (Our gay Nanki-Poo from Mikado, Nick, even did a solo and a duet, the duet being "Libiamo" from La Traviata no less! Apparently he was in their production of LT last year, too.) When I live in NYC, I am soo going to go see operas at the Met all the time; it is decided. :) (Well, if I can ever manage to afford them, anyway...) I actually applied for an admin assistant job there, but I'm sure I have no chance in hell, even with my friend/ex-UMGASS-director Emily as a reference; she works there. I'm betting a zillion people have applied, ditto for the receptionist job I also applied for at the New York Theatre Workshop (where "Rent" originated)...I did get an answering machine message from someone about the admin job at the Actors' Center, but when I called her back I got her voicemail too, ack! Haven't heard back again yet...in the message she just said she was just screening people, trying to put together a group of candidates she can submit to the head honcho guy or whatever...also probably a long shot, but please keep your fingers crossed for me! (And for my NYC job hunt in general!)
P.P.S. Tomorrow is the damn annual Wu Center picnic that I have to singlehandedly plan, organize and run (with little to no thanks, naturally :P ) every year, and I gotta say I'm glad this will be my last of those! I just hope we don't all melt in the heat out at Gallup Park.
P.P.P.S. Okay, so I guess I couldn't resist writing about a little life stuff. But now, time to finally un-pause and return to "Dr. Horrible", yay!!
ETA: As a self-respecting Abbagirl I MUST see the movie of "Mamma Mia" sometime this weekend, ahhh!! But so far I got no-one to go with, sigh...anyone, anyone? Bueller? (One person already turned me down, even. *sniff*) |

| welcome! bienvenue! |
[Jul. 17th, 2008|06:09 pm] |

oh, hai! welcome to my book of shadows - why don't you sit for a spell?? :)
just a quick intro, as i am trying to get this up & going ... joining groups and such. as i state in my userinfo, this account is being used for my book of shadows that i will share with everyone. there won't be many personal or other entries, since my main blog is here. i also have a link to it in my userinfo, as well as other ways to get a hold of my slippery self!
as a forewarning, i worship the Divine as a female - NOT a male. i don't recognize any male deities - hence the influence of Dianic/Feminist Wicca. any posts will be female centered, and if you don't share my views of the Divine being solely female - you can take my entries and tweak 'em so they fit your method of worship. just do me a favor, mmmkay? just give me a credit along the lines of "tweaked from original posting by lis" ... or something. just acknowledge that you swiped my stuff & just tweaked it.
example? at Yule, a good portion of Pagan paths celebrate the rebirth of the Sun God. NOT MOI. since i don't recognize any male deities, i celebrate the rebirth of the Sun Goddess - ie, Lucina. so, if i post something relating to Yule/ Winter Solstice, you may have to tweaky-tweaky.
OH. one more thing - i have my own language. *pause* okay, well, not LITERALLY. most people that have known me over the years know i tend to word things quite uniquely that most, if not all, people who not use. in high school & college, they called these "mittsie-isms" ... mittsie being an old nickname. so if i word something in a way you don't understand, by all means - ASK. there are no stupid questions - only stupid answers ;)

| | open minded | ] | I just learned from a post by the ever interesting unblinkered that Sting made a recording of John Dowland songs. WTF were the very first letters that came to mind.
I hied me hence forthwith to YouTube and checkéd it out. Erm..well.. I found his lute playing not too hard on the ears. His singing? I started the video of 'Come Again' and..oh dear..no..nonono.
He has no sustain at all and the effects of fifty or so years of chain smoking seem apparent. If they hadn't given him some kind of resonating amplifying karaoke microphone treament he'd have been lost altogether. Now that my expectations we're appropriately low, I found his 'Weep You No More Sad Fountains' slightly less painful(except for his diction). If it was some friend of mine , in some community college voice class, I'd say he was soso. I wouldn't encourage him to post his efforts to youtube if he was at all sensitive to criticism though. But here's the good thing. The Youtube video I found is a sing-along. I really didn't pay that much attention to Sting because I was trying to hit that G without having used it in several years. Really rather than cringing and saying Oh God no, Sting, please don't do that. I'm glad he's experimenting and just giving it a go because I hope that gives more people permission to get together and sing something , maybe even something not usually found in a karaoke bar, or play an instrument that isn't really just a fancy video game interface , even if they're just tolerably average (if they're genuinely awful, they should shut up and make themselves useful by turning pages ...no, just kidding, they can sing if they want to ;)
So, my entry in the 'don't you wish we all entertained each other like the do in Jane Austen novels' category: Sing Along with Sting. Go ahead. (lower voice types (I mean like Basses, not rock stars ;)..you go play Whist or something, you'll get a turn later)

A couple of years ago, what triggered symptoms of an anxiety attack for me was carbon monoxide all over the city because of the generators because of the blackout because of Typhoon Milenyo. Recently, I was wondering why I was manifesting mild symptoms of anxiety again. Then, the solvents used for oil painting flashed like images of Psycho in my mind. Just when I was starting to enjoy this newly rediscovered passion, here comes a damper. I guess I would have to embark on a quest for a good replacement for thinner and turpentine. Baket, oh, baket?
Sabagay. I've always known that toxic odors and fumes as my enemy. I used to raise hell at the whiff of cigarette smoke in shoots. I've been googling. My alternatives citrus solvents. Leo and Jay suggested this thing called Grumtine from Grumbacher, na wala sa National or Sketchbooks or that art supply shop near my area. Grrr. I actually got a small bottle of Low Odor Thinner, but Leo told me that thinner would cause my brushes to deteriorate fast. Well, it's either my brushes or my health. The warning on the label says it causes lung damage when swallowed, and constant exposure leads to dry, cracked skin. It also affects the nerves. Accckkk. Was this how Van Gogh went crazy and got depressed and tore off a part his ear and eventually killed himself? Or maybe, the worry about solvents was the one that did him in. Wala akong balak maging tragic artist.
I would have to stay away from painting for the meantime. My throat feels a bit sore and I'm supposing it's from the fumes. I need to find a way to get around this. Any suggestions besides moving to the roof? |

| День первый. Окончание. |
[Jul. 16th, 2008|07:23 pm] |
