So, I made a goal to watch 100 movies this year. You know, for fun. This is the list so far, and as you can see, I still have a little ways to go. Hopefully I'll reach my goal.

The cool thing about this was that I watched a lot of films that I never would have otherwise, and I'm really glad of that. I discovered some amazing gems in there.

So, to celebrate my year of 100 films, a picspam!

picspam: gauri in lagaan: once upon a time in india
for challenge #12 @ [info]picspammy: color focus

What is Lagaan? It's a charming (and charmingly long) Bollywood film that came out in 2001. You can read more about it here. I saw this film as part of a European Studies class (... don't ask), and I was struck by the beauty and scope of the film.

The offical description of the film is as follows:

The movie is set in the Victorian period of the British Raj and revolves around the peasants from a barren village who are oppressed by high taxes imposed by the British. When the peasants attempt to persuade the officers to reduce the taxes, the officers put forth a proposition to the peasants. One senior officer offers to cancel their taxes for three years if their village team beats him at cricket. After accepting his proposition, the villagers face the arduous task of learning the game and playing for a result that will change their village's destiny.

I would totally encourage you to find and watch this movie if you are at all interested in seeing a fun and entertaining movie. And if you need more reasons: 1. The music for this film was done by A.H. Rahman, who did the music a=fro Slumdog Millionaire; 2. One of the British characters is played by Paul Blackthorne of The Dresden Files. And it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

I chose to picspam the character of Gauri, played by Gracy Singh. While nearly all the female characters wear bright colorful outfits, Gauri's left the greatest impression on me. And the film nerd in me compares her bright and vibrant outfits to the drab and colorless outfits of her sometimes-rival.

There are what might be construed as some general spoilers in this spam. Nothing film ruining, but just know that the spam covers the whole film, so if you're super-sensitive...

Alright, introduction over. Picspam time now!

picspam: yellow/orange.sunlight and penelope in "the brothers bloom"
for challenge #12 @ [info]picspammy

As soon as I read the new challenge at picspammy, a gazillion ideas popped into my head. Taking Fil Lit was a blessing and a curse. I may have to do red in American Beauty or the color in Schindler's List, and I'll definately do one with Ilsa and her costumes in Casablanca.

But the other one I thought of was The Brothers Bloom. This movie is pretty much perfect, as it has a fun, engaging and interesting plot, amazig actors and brilliant writing. In addition, Rian Johnson, the writer and director of the film had a very specific vision and it is executed perfectly.

Johnson did this really awesome podcast/commentary to encourage people to see the film again in theaters and listen to the commentary on their mp3 players while watching. He calls it the film nerd version, because he talks more about the influences of the story and the colors and camera angles and fun things like that.

One of the things that's really emphasized in the film (especially after you hear Johnson mention all of the moments) in the use of the colors yellow and orange and sunlight in connection to the character of Penelope. This connects with her namesake Penelope of The Odyssey. In addition, there are connections in the movie/characters to the myth of Daedalus and Icarus, which also heavily fetures the sun.

Seriously, check out the commentary if you get the chance. Hopefully it will be featured on the DVD release; it's totally insightful.

Anyway, I chose to picspam Penelope (Rachel Weisz) and her visual connection to light, the sun and the colors yellow and orange.

Note: there are some vauge visual spoilers for the film. If you are super sensitive to that kind of thing, please wait until after you've seen the film.

Yay! Pretty! Comment if you liked it, or if you want to chat about how amazing/beautiful this film is.

Picspam: "Creation" Trailer
for [info]picspammy's Challenge #11: Short Form

I just saw this trailer the other day, and it hit all of my criteria for an awesome trailer. It highlights the beautiful cinematography, shows off the awesome actors in it, and is edited in such a way that not only is the conflict of the film conveyed, one even invests emotionall in the less than two minutes of footage presented. (Also, married actors in films together makes me happy).

This picspam is kind of large, because I wasn't happy with how the beautiful images were looking when I sized them down. Trailer is embedded at the end.

Teaser:

My title will be: On The Origin of Species. )

Picspam: Hardly Working "Airplane"
for [info]picspammy's Challenge #11: Short Form

Hardly Working is a online sketch comedy show made by the staff of the College Humor website. The College Humor Show on MTV is pretty similar to Hardly Working. In fact, some of the human resource case files were originally Hardly Working webisodes.

This was the first episode of Hardly Working I ever watched. It was awesome and random and then I had to watch all the rest of the webisodes.

Picspam is under the cut, along with dialog and the video embedded at the end.

God help you, Flight 492 )

What is Mad Max? It's a mockumentary I made for my Cinema as Literature final project. I spent a lot of time on this baby and I'm really proud of it. Unfortunately, my teacher was gunshy about showing it in class, since it contained people from the class and she didn't think veryone would get the satire. Anyway, I want to release it into the world so other people can see it. Plus, I would love to hear what people think of it! Please let me know!

Film: Mad Max
By: Laura Stewart
Starring: Laura stewart, Evan Marshall, Brett Gray, Crason Hockley, Elliott Bourgeois, Lisa Ding, Erika Beiderbeck, Sam Gerendasy, Tali Reed, Emily Ramberg, Stacey Stiffler-Armstrong, Nainoa Wilmes and Max Rabe as Mad Max.
Genre: Mockumentary, Short Film
Summary: How would you describe the wierdest person you know? In Mad Max, the question of how a crazy person came to be is analyzed. Through personal interviews and analysis, this short film looks at the nature of crazy: is it really crazy, or is it just different?
Notes: See above.
Trivia: Written, filmed and edited in approximately 3 weeks. The first 20 seconds of the opening credits contain footage from Max's own short film.

For [info]picspammy's Challenge #9: Scenes and Sequences.

To be honest, I don't love Garden State. I think it's one of those that you have to be in a very specific mood and mindset to actually enjoy. But, there is one scene that I can watch over and over, no matter when.

It's the one point inthe movie where I feel completely and totally with the characters and I just want to open my heart to them. It's also just beautifully shot and written. So yay! Picspam time!

I have to believe in a world outside my own mind. I have to believe that my actions still have meaning, even if I can't remember them. I have to believe that when my eyes are closed, the world's still there. Do I believe the world's still there? Is it still out there?... Yeah. We all need mirrors to remind ourselves who we are. I'm no different.

i know it’s possible to make things up, to hallucinate and imagine things that aren’t really there. but do you think it’s possible to invent an entire relationship? to have specific memories of moments in your mind, to have physical souvenirs of those memories, and to know in your heart that these events occurred, but what if they didn’t?

ff the other person has no recollection of what has occurred, does it mean it didn’t? if the truth is rewritten, do you follow your heart and what’s in your head and the pieces of what was left, or do those things that you swear you remember just become less true? does it matter?

is it necessary to hold on to things to justify our own sense of reality? it isn’t truth, because we cannot comprehend truth, because we are tainted by everything that has previously happened to us. But these articles of our personal reality, they are necessary. it’s the anchor that keeps us sane, the rope that ties us to the dock of consciousness. without our concepts we would be floating in the realm of the spirits.

that’s why it’s still truth, even if no one else sees it, remembers it. even if someone tells you these events are a lie, faith in what you know to be your reality is what keeps you tied to the dock, just like gravity keeps you from lifting off from solid ground.

2008 Review: Movies

2008 was an excellent year for moving watching, for me. I got a new, super fast internet connection that made it a reality for me to see movies that way, especially smaller indie films that don’t have a wide release. Also, I’m currently taking a class called Cinema as Literature where I’ve gotten to see a lot of amazing movies (Casablanca, Saving Private Ryan, The Deer Hunter, The Insider, L.A. Confidential) and it’s making me an even bigger film geek. I love it.
