question about social-ness at RISD [May. 11th, 2009|05:47 pm]

lufiamanaelf
So, I'm a highschool junior, starting to look at schools. I visited RISD on Saturday and I LOVED it. Everything about it seemed awesome. I'm just really really worried about one thing. What are the people like?
I'm very social, and I like talking to all sorts of people. Is it super clique-y to the point where it's not like that? Also, as a girl, I never hang out with other girls. Are there enough (straight) guys at the school for me to hang out with or date or anything? And what kind of you know, "high school stereotype" do most people fit?
To me, the social part of college is a big deal, almost as much as the school part, and even though I love everything about the school, I don't wanna go if I wouldn't have friends. And it seems shallow, but I really want to go somewhere where I can have friends who are like me.

I'm not sure where I want to go to school yet, but I'm thinking California college of art. I want to major in creative writing. I'm going to a community college for a year. I'm confused on the whole transfer credit thing. Like how many courses do I need to take for 60 hours? Will classes like english 101 and 102 count as credits? Its confusing. I'd appreciate it if someone would clear this up for me.

I got into School of Museum of Fine Arts/Tufts but its close to 40,000 a year and I'd need to get my BFA and then keep going into grad school to be able to do art therapy.

I also got into Art Institute of Boston/Lesley, with 7,500 scholarship renewed every year.

My question is, I know a degree for art therapy from Tufts would help me, but how importent is that in art therapy?  I know the first few years are tough but is it worth 100,000+ in student loans?

Anyone know of any art colleges that would offer Game Art/Design programs? I know of a few, but I'm wondering which ones you would recommend. I would love a school on the east coast (or close to it) but I'm open to anything in the US, pretty much. Thanks in advance!

What are the best schools for an illustration major? I recently attended CCA for a semester, but left due to personal reasons.

I am considering Art Center, SVA, and MICA....but right now everything sort of sounds the same when I look through their websites. I wish I knew what was unique about each school.

transfer help [Jan. 29th, 2009|09:35 pm]

i am currently a sophomore in nyu's studio art program, and while it's a nice cozy art program, i feel pretty constricted by the traditional focus of study- i have a choice of concentrating in drawing and painting, sculpture, or video. also, there are very few classes offered each semester because the program is so small.
i know i want to switch to a real art school, and one with a more interdisciplinary focus. my main interests lie in installation, sound, and multimedia art. i've got good grades and nyu's liberal arts background + a foundation year.

the first schools that came to mind to apply to were saic and smfa. any other suggestions? i am pretty open to moving anywhere, haha. thankssss

So I've applied to:
Massachusetts College of art
Art Institute of Boston
School of Museum of Fine Arts (bleh)

Anyone that has gone to these schools/has had a "real" tour, (Ive just wondered around/have visited my friends after classes ect.) What are the dorms like??  I've been living by myself in Boston for quite some time and have finally decided that my year off has lasted long enough.  I figured living in a dorm would make it much much easier for me to focus on School, not my job.  The only way I could really do that though is if I could get a singal room because I would go totally Insane with sharing a room haha.

Thanks!

Fashion design schools near NC? [Jan. 8th, 2009|09:02 pm]

lake_fairy
Hey everyone, I just stumbled upon this community in my search for fashion design schools and thought maybe someone here could help me.

I went to Appalachian State for three semesters for their Art department, but decided that it just wasn't for me, I had a hard time making art for other people, so I transferred to a local community college and am two semesters away from graduating with an associates in Baking and Pastry arts.

I am looking for a college (university, community college etc...) that has a two year degree in Fashion Design or Apparel Development. I am far more interested in the technical side of the degree (actually making garments and learning how to pattern...) than I am in the management/business side of it. I live in North Carolina and was hoping to find a college here that offers that program with a focus on the technical side of the degree, more than the business, but despite several hours of scouring the internet, I cannot seem to find one.

TLDR: Can anyone give me a suggestion for a school that offers this program in (or near) NC? I'd like to stay close enough to visit my family in Boone if at all possible.

Thank you all for your help :)

Housing [Dec. 21st, 2008|04:34 pm]

I'm Lauren and I just got accepted to SVA for photography. Now the question is, where do I live? I'd love to have access to Gramercy Park, but does the women's residence allow for gentlemen callers (like a friend from out of town needing a place to crash)?

I'd rather not have more than 1 roommate and I'm going to be at the e 21st building a lot. Any advice?

Hi, I'm a senior in high school and I plan to go into film. I'm really skeptical right now about SVA, SCAD, and Columbia College Chicago and how legit their programs are. They all seem impressive but are which school is the best for film (cinematography), good internships, and later on getting a good job?

Photo MFA [Nov. 3rd, 2008|08:58 pm]

_pianississimo
Hey all -

I'm beginning to look at MFA programs (photography). I know I want to stay in Chicago, so I'm pretty much between SAIC and Columbia. I guess I'd like some opinions on both programs. I'm just beginning the search (I've been changing my mind a lot about grad school over the past few years, from creative writing to film to photography), so right now I know basically nothing. I know SAIC is highly regarded, which might be helpful in the whole get-a-job-teaching-post-secondary thing, but besides that, I guess I'd just like to know what you guys consider to be pros-cons of the programs. I'll think of more specific questions later. I just wanted to throw this out there..

Thankssss.

RISD Textile Program [Oct. 19th, 2008|09:53 pm]

krysta111

I've been looking into the Textiles Program at RISD and was curious if anybody(current or past students) have any feedback about the program that may be helpful to me?  I have a bachelor's degree in applied design, so I think most of my liberal art credits are transferable.  Is there any advice for my portfolio submission, things to work on and include or not?  I'm trying to visit the campus in November.  I’ve heard that during a certain day in the week there is a gallery/showing of student work.  Is this true?  If so what day is it usually on?

thanks!

Oh thank god. I never thought I'd find a community like this!!

I have a lot  of questions and this is long so bear with me :)

1) I'm a Senior in high school and I plan on definitely applying to the following schools:

The Art Institute of Boston (not to be confused with chain of Art Institutes and the New England Art Institute)
School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston
Massachusetts College of Art and Design

I am also considering:

Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design
MICA
Maine College of Art and Design

Any opinions and/or information on these schools would be great!
Especially the first 3!
I live in Charleston, SC now but I'm originally from Boston
Ideally I want to go homeeee! :)

2) I'm attending the Atlanta Portfolio Day in Nov. but I also want to visit the schools in Boston
because I will be visiting there Dec. 20- January 8 would this be a good time to visit? or no because of the holiday break? It would be far more convenient to do it at this time i'm just not sure if the schools are open for tour or at least an interview...

3) I know that colleges like to see drawings from life and still life etc but that is not my strong point whatsoever. I can get by but it's not what I would like to show off. Do I still have a shot at getting in without a lot of life drawings? I have great abstract art (not just throwing paint etc haha) and photography, would this overrule it?

4) I have no idea what I want to major in. I thought I had it narrowed down. Art. HA! Well clearly that is not the case when attending an art school! I'm definitely interested in Fine Art, Jewelery, and Photography. But what could I do career wise with those majors? Is an Art Teacher my only hope at feeding myself and paying my rent?!

and I'm sure I'll think of more questions. Thanks in advance :)

SCHOOL HELP [Oct. 11th, 2008|06:53 pm]

What do you know about the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI, not to be mistaken as the Art Institute of SF)?

Difficulty of acceptance, finding a career, tuition+living per year, student life(if you are a student).

Thanks, I'm stressed out by all the applications that I have not even started.

NPD [Jul. 11th, 2008|06:23 pm]

j_aime_ceci
Hi, I was wondering about National Portfolio Day. Should I be hoping to get serious advice on which school to attend there? And do all art institutions show up there regardless of state, as in same people will be on Georgia NPD as at Florida NPD?

EDIT:  I live in Florida, and there are two NPD events in Fl this January, but I was wondering if it is worth it/makes sense to fly to Georgia this November for an extra NPD? I am really broke and November is too early, I won't be ready, but should I still try to get to Georgia's NPD or is Miami and Sarasota events in Florida a good enough deal? (And would Florida events be more fruitful since there's an Art Basel here in December?)

Time for an intoduction. [Jul. 7th, 2008|09:45 pm]

Hello all..
My name's Sabrina, currently attending OCAD in Toronto. I'm going into my second year as an illustration major, and am loving it so far. Prior to OCAD I attended an arts specialty high school, so I guess you can say I've always lived in a lovely art school bubble.

I'm looking to study abroad for a semester in third year, any suggestions for good illustration programs in the US/Europe? There's a list of schools we have exchange agreements with; I'm leaning more towards an American school, and the list of available ones is quite extensive. Right now I'm looking into Parsons and RISD, but I don't know how difficult it is to get accepted for exchange there. Has anyone done a semester abroad at either, or anywhere else? I don't really know what to expect in terms of course selection variety or housing arrangements. Thanks :)

Introduction [Jul. 6th, 2008|01:23 am]

insomniacartist
SO. I'm going to community college for a year in Pennsylvania, where I've lived all of my life.

So here's my situation!

I'll be majoring in Fine Arts.

I was originally going to attend the Academy of Arts University in San Francisco for a Photography major.

Now, though, I'm rethinking things. And I was wondering if people could give me information/opinions?

My problem is that I'm really interested in a lot of things.

Originally I was going to be a photojournalist after graduating from AAU. HOWEVERRRR~

Here's what I was thinking:

-I could go to SCAD and major in sequential arts. Manga making! YESSSS. O_O But, it wouldn't really be easy to find a job afterwards, right?
-Or I could go to Tyler School of Art and major in Painting and Drawing. But again, job? D:
-Pratt for either Writing for Publication or Illustration.
But my BIGGEST idea was to perhaps go overseas? I was thinking an art school in England, Ireland, or Italy? Anyone know of any art schools there that would accept international students?

SORRY TO BOTHER PEOPLE! D: I appreciate any opinion and such.
