| Auction News |
[Aug. 29th, 2008|12:21 pm] |
Hi all,
A few people have been asking around the traps, so here's the news: our official tally of bids is $4215. Now this may change slightly, or indeed be inaccurate (some of us were up very LATE last night tidying up loose ends) but that's what we think it is. All in all, over 90 separate items sold, which is BEYOND AWESOME.
Assuming all bids are paid, that puts the Cancer is a Cunt fundraiser for paulhaines over the 20,000 goal we wanted to pay for his Avastin treatments. As said elsewhere, this means we can contribute a bit extra to Paul and his family to help them with their other expenses during this difficult time.
If you are paying for a winning item, please send your donation to the Paul Haines Paypal fund via a donate button and email artscaresyou@gmail.com with a copy of your receipt, your postal address and reference to which item you are paying for. The Paypal does not allow you to make any extra comments, which means that unless you email us, we might not know if your donation is connected to the auction.
Donators, hold tight - we'll try to let you know who has paid for their items by the end of the weekend so you can have a frenzy of posting things out next week. We'll contact you with addresses, etc. We have many, many people to contact, so please be patient with us.
This has been a brilliant project to be part of, and I think you'll all have to agree it was a very fun way to raise some money! We even got a few last minute bidding wars happening in the last ten minutes which was very exciting.
I hope you all enjoy your gorgeous new acquisitions!

| ITEM - 'Ganesh' pastel drawing by Talie Helene |
[Aug. 24th, 2008|11:55 pm] |
TITLE: 'Ganesh' MEDIA: Dry pastels and charcoal.
DESCRIPTION:
Subject is LORD GANESHA the dancing Elephant God from Hindu Mythology, with his headress of orchids and a human skull. The remover of obstacles, god of writing and travel - seemed appropriate for ArtScaresYou.
This modest little drawing is monochrome dry pastels (black, white, shades of grey), with some charcoal pencil detail. The paper has a 'marble' texture to it. The original is 14.5cm X 21cm. The drawing is mounted (not shown).
Originally created to accompany a poem in a small poetry anthology produced as coursework. This piece received some nice feedback over at Elfwood, with just a hint of grim perspective. (Note: Copyright statement on image is only on the digital version lifted from Elfwood Gallery - it doesn't deface the original).
If anyone would like to bid for a pastel drawing of Kali - given the Paul Haines focus of our scary art auction - such a commission for this auction would be willingly undertaken. Make an offer, if interested.

| ITEM- 'Living Shroud' felt wall hanging by Rachel Holkner |
[Aug. 21st, 2008|02:28 pm] |
TITLE: "The dark forest moon rising in the last misty evening before the living shroud walks. With cobwebs." Felt Wall Hanging. MEDIA: Merino and Leicester wool, silk threads and fabric, soy fibres. Cotton backing. DESCRIPTION: A wall hanging handmade using a wet felt method. Wet felting involves the agitation of raw fibres using soap and water until they bind together into a single piece of fabric. Other than the cotton backing, no sewing or glues were used in the formation of this panel. Due to its somewhat random and unpredictable nature, wet felting results in entirely unique pieces. This panel shows a dead tree with a full moon rising behind. The white foreground 'cobweb' hangs free, giving extra dimension to the work. Silk threads (some of it reclaimed sari fibres) give a sheen and a hint of colour. See here for more detailed images. Please ask in the comments if you have any questions about the hanging's construction. The panel measures 40cm (15.5 inches) wide and 38cm (15 inches) high. A pocket in the back allows insertion of a rod (dowel or stick) for hanging, as seen in the photo. For ease of delivery a hanging rod is not included, however coordinating yarn will be, if you wish to copy the hanging method shown. Alternatively the panel could be framed by someone familiar with textile arts. DONATED BY: Rachel Holkner MINIMUM BID: $AU100 WILL POST TO: Worldwide

| ITEM - Fivefold, by Nathan Burrage (signed) |
[Aug. 21st, 2008|02:30 pm] |
TITLE: FIVEFOLD MEDIA: Book - signed copy. DESCRIPTION: Signed copy of FIVEFOLD - a contemporary mystic thriller that fuses the ancient mystic traditions of the Kabbalah (which purports to hold the key to a hidden meaning within the first five books of the Bible) with the future of five friends in modern-day UK. Published by Random House Australia. As I read this novel I was reminded of two very different artistic items: the film Raiders of the Lost Ark and the novel Black Easter by James Blish. This novel is something of a cross between the two: mixing some of the adventure of the Spielberg/Lucas film with the arcane demonology of Blish's book. ... There is a lot of talent at work here. This is the author's first novel, and, on this evidence, he's going to be one to watch. DONATED BY: Nathan Burrage MINIMUM BID: AUD$10 WILL POST TO (Australia/worldwide): Worldwide

[Aug. 19th, 2008|11:47 am] |
MEDIA: Steel, brass, base metal, chain, sterling silver (small spider), clock watch parts, gears
DESCRIPTION: This Steampunk necklace was specially designed by "Clockwork Zero" for this fundraiser. There are two little spiders here - the smaller one is made of silver. It hangs off a very lovely gear that was part of a timer. There is a wonderful clock-winding key "size 8", made of steel and brass. The main body of the piece is stainless steel, and it is around 2 inches wide. You can see the "Slow / Fast" (S F) and move the small brass hand which was used to get the clock to run faster or slower. The design concept for this piece of steampunk jewelry is about how we can discover ways to confront our fears – for me personally it has to do with my fear of spiders. The piece is on a simple double-linked chain. Any questions - please feel free to ask here or at my Livejournal. DONATED BY: clockworkzero (C.A. Manestar) MINIMUM BID: $25 WILL POST TO: worldwide

| ITEM - Three Guitar Lessons with Scott Young |
[Aug. 19th, 2008|09:48 am] |
TITLE: 3 Guitar Lessons with Scott Young MEDIA: Music Instruction DESCRIPTION:
3 Guitar Lessons with Scott Young
About Scott
Best known for his years with Australia's premier technical fusion-metal band Alarum; a career which included winning Best Band and Best Album (for Eventuality, Willowtip Records) in the 2004 Kerrang! Metal For The Brain Heavy Metal Awards. (Those unfamiliar with Alarum's music might wish to check out the embedded Velocity clip [Scott plays lead solo], or swing by the band MySpace or Scott's solo page and have a listen.)
Experience includes eighteen years playing, thirteen of those seriously gigging, recording three full-length studio albums, and touring internationally - playing on the Carving Up North America Tour, as well as dates in the UK. With his more recent band, gothic metallers Darkest Dawn, Scott has a track Judging The Fall forthcoming on the soundtrack of the Australian horror film Prey. (Again, sample songs are available for listening at the band MySpace.)
With a background in rock and metal, with a healthy dash of ambient music thrown in, Scott is not a formal, theorized teacher, but rather has a fun, relaxed approach to the guitar. Lessons are focused on expressive playing, tone, and creativity.

| ITEM - Scoring & Sound Design for Audio Art or Short Film [AUCTION CLOSED] |
[Aug. 19th, 2008|12:38 am] |
CT TITLE: Scoring & Sound Design for Audio Art or Short Film MEDIA: Music Composition & Audio Production DESCRIPTION:
This item is a service pledge.
What do you get?
Thematic and underscore composition, for one short film or one audio art piece (short story, poem, or "radio" drama). In addition, Sound Design (Atmos, Foley, Special FX), to support storytelling or poetics as required in that piece.
If you already have an audio recording, work will be tailored to fit your existing audio. If you would like to record an audio arts piece from scratch, the vocal recording of story, poem or drama voice over and dialogue is included in the package. (If you are located afar, we will work within those limitations - you can expect no lesser quality than the Writing Show's Halloween Special). The finished piece must be no longer than ten minutes in length (strict). Film-makers must have a film at a rough edit stage suitable for spotting.
What don't you get?
You don't get -- A full Hollywood-style orchestral score, live kit drums, multi-million dollar effects, or a rush job. Be realistic, this is a "no budget job" delivered by a developing artist and student.
You don't get -- A rock opera. The focus is underscoring and FX to support a text-based audio work.
You don't get -- exclusive copyright to the music. Rights revert to the composer, just like an authors rights after anthology publication - but you will have the right to broadcast and display the integrated piece (including online), submit it to markets, and include it in your funding packages to arts councils. (The copyright of your words and performance remain your own.)
You don't get -- Vocal talent. This item does not include a theatre company in a box. Ideally, the audio arts piece should be an author reading, or the vocal talent must be sourced by the writer or director.
You don't get -- ADR for film - filmmakers will need to complete their own ADR with a technician devoted to that craft, using their own actors.
You don't get -- 5.1 mix. The studio is not yet set up for serious 5.1.
Who would this suit?
Student or underground filmmakers, or writers looking to expand their credits to include podcasting (think Broken Sea Audio), web-streaming for promotion (think vibing up your MySpace page with your own story), or submission to audio arts literary markets (think Going Down Swinging).
Who is going to do this sound music thingywhatsit?
Talie Helene has a Certificate IV in Music Industry Technical Production, and is a current student in the Diploma of Music Industry Technical Production at RMIT, where she's learning various aspects of audio for media. She has studied filmscoring for two years with composer Brett Rosenberg (best known for scoring the film Half Light, starring Demi Moore), and has been training her ear for orchestration playing double bass with Maroondah Symphony and Saba Persian Orchestra. She is also trudging through a Diploma of Arts in Professional Writing and Editing, and is aware of text-based artistic considerations from a writers perspective. She will listen to what you want to achieve. You can hear some of Talie's music at her MySpace, and on the Black Box e-anthology (a fundraiser for the AHWA). She operates a home studio with Protools, Logic Studio, and Sibelius5, which is where this project would be developed.
DONATED BY: Talie Helene MINIMUM BID: $100.00 BUY IT NOW PRICE: $300.00 WILL POST TO (Australia/worldwide/other): Final audio stereo mix can be delivered local or international.
Don't know how to bid in the auction? Check out the handy 'How To Bid' Guide.
