Mark Rothko

The role of the artist, of course, has always been that of image-maker. Different times require different images. Today when our aspirations have been reduced to a desperate attempt to escape from evil, and times are out of joint, our obsessive, subterranean and pictographic images are the expression of the neurosis which is our reality. To my mind certain so-called abstraction is not abstraction at all. On the contrary, it is the realism of our time.End quote.

— Mark Rothko

On writing

I´m thinking of seriously getting into writing, and I thought I´d share my thoughts on it.

With the physical manifestation of a thought in characters, symbols and letters comes its death. That is why I am so scared to write something down, for fear that once it leaves my mind and enters paper that it will be gone for good, that I will only be able to appreciate it posthmously in its grave of script. But I want to feel, I want to unravel what´s been building up inside of me for so long, what´s been screaming for a way out of the confines of me, myself and I. I want the pain, the remorse, the sorrow, and the regret to unravel and shine on all to soak and embrace, so they can feel, so I can feel, so we can feel, while I remain the eternal sacrifice.

Lucian Freud, Brett Whiteley

What do I ask of a painting? I ask it to astonish, disturb,
seduce, convince.
~ Lucian Freud

Art should astonish, transmute, transfix. One must work
at the tissue between truth and paranoia.
~ Brett Whiteley

"What distinguishes the poet or, quite generally, the artist from other human beings, therefore, is not his skill, his mastery, but the intensity of his feeling; and it is this intensity alone which really matters. A work of art produced without feeling, in cold blood, is really a fake; it is dishonest and immoral, for the public is deceived if a poet writes of a love he did not really feel in his heart." - G.
Diablo Cody quotes

Are you surprised by the reaction to your work?
I think people’s reaction to art is more often about themselves than it is about the art. People really project and they find parts of themselves in the things they consume. So its always interesting sometimes the new idea people have on things that I didn’t even intend to put in there. And that’s what's kinda cool.

I guess I would rather fail doing something off the wall, than succeed at something pedestrian. That’s my whole philosophy in life.

But I feel like I have a responsibility to try because there's such a paucity of female directors. There are worse things you can do in life than direct a bad movie.

I always say I'm kind of an emotional scavenger, because everything that I write about is drawn from life, it's drawn from experience that I actually had.

CP: We've all heard the stereotype about Hollywood: the shallowness, the backstabbing—
Cody: It's all true. But one thing that people don't realize is, I have never met people more passionate. Yes, there's a lot of distasteful stuff, but the people who are passionate about their art in Hollywood are more passionate about their art than anyone I've ever met anywhere else. Because people are literally living their dreams, so they are just clinging to that so ferociously, and it's really kind of beautiful and inspiring. People are willing to chuck their entire lives for their work in Hollywood. I've never seen a bank teller do that.

"That's Not Art, That's Illustration!"

"Almost everybody is an artist these days. Rock and Roll singers are artists. So are movie directors, performance artists, make-up artists, tattoo artists, con artists and rap artists. Movie stars are artists. Madonna is an artist, because she explores her own sexuality. Snoop Doggy Dogg is an artist because he explores other people's sexuality. Victims who express their pain are artists. So are guys in prison who express themselves on shirt cardboard. Even consumers are artists when they express themselves in their selection of commodities. The only people left in America who seem not to be artists are illustrators."

- Brad Holland from "Express Yourself - It's Later Than You Think"
