| About: | These rules were lovingly compiled by There won’t be too many rules seeing that we're not much for the whole ‘rules’ thing. That being said, we are not exactly a democracy when it comes to how things are to be run -- it’s easier that way, and leaves less room for people to interpret how things are supposed to be. We’re really not as bad as we sound, we promise. ;) 1. Character allowances. There are several art communities out there that deal in furries (i.e. animal-headed people); with that in mind, we don’t allow furries here. Know that we are not against furry or anthropomorphic art or characters -- we are just doing something else with this community. Also, no anime cat girls/guys. Same reasons as above. Now to the good stuff -- what is allowed. We will allow human and human-type characters, including: humans (obviously); fairies; pixies; elves; orcs; goblins; dwarves; superheroes; vampires; demons; angels; aliens; mermaids; mythological races and deities; monsters; and so forth. Fan characters are allowed so long as they fall within the community guidelines. We will also allow humans with animal attributes (think more human than animal) -– but by that we mean, *some* animal features in the right context. For example, humanoids with claws, or scales, or feathered wings, or tails... as long as they're recognizable as "human", and the other bits aren't dominant or just "tacked on". No anime girls with cat or bunny ears, for example. If your chars must have animal bits, please give us some justification for it. Human/animal hybrids from an existing mythology or culture are fine as long as they are PREDOMINANTLY humanoid, such as Medusa. Mythological characters are NOT allowed if they are basically just a human head on an animal body (centaurs or harpies), or an animal head on a human body (gods such as Anubis and Horus). These fall too close to "furry" for our taste. This also applies to shape-shifting characters such as werewolves –- give your werewolf chick wolflike yellow eyes or claws in her otherwise human form, sure, but don't try to depict her as a wolf or a wolf-headed human. If in doubt, ask. We cannot stress this enough. 2. Styles and mediums. Digital, painting, pencil, ink, marker; Cubist, Impressionist, anime [GOOD anime], whatever -- we don’t want to limit mediums or styles. Who are we to say what is worthy art and what is not? However, some styles are more complex than others, and some mediums have larger margins of error than others; and we want people to put effort into their pictures -- after all, remember that you are here for practice and to get your work noticed -- so you want to do your best with every single piece you put out there. We want ETA 23/08/06: Your art doesn't have to be just 2D either. 3D, whether digital or in a traditional medium, is also fine. Break out the marble and chisels. 3. Standards. All images are to be finished, completed works of art. If your piece is to be black and white, then make it a fully complete black and white drawing, not just some line art because you didn’t want to put effort into the piece. Flat color is fine if it complements your style and if the work is complete as such, but shading is something that nearly everyone needs a degree of practice in! If you don’t have the time to do your best, then skip a month. It’s better than turning in substandard work. On the subject of line art -- whatever you do, CLEAN UP your line art! We don’t want to see gaps and specks in it that could poke an eye out. There are numerous tutorials online that will show you how to do this. If you're unsure about your line art, post it for review -- 4. Purpose. We do ask that, if you post an image for critique, you do so while the pic is still "in progress". We can't offer much help for a finished piece beyond "this is what you should do differently next time." Posting tutorials that you create as community entries is fine; it can help a lot to see how someone else does something. We only ask that if your tutorial is particularly long or graphics-intensive, use an LJ-cut, or put your tutorial elsewhere online and post a link to it. ETA 23/08/06: By the same token, if you have an image that meets our standards and that you're particularly proud of, posting it to 'show it off' is also fine; everyone needs to preen occasionally. We only ask that you abide by the tutorial rule: a cut if it's large, or a link if it's posted elsewhere. If the image involves nudity, sexual content, or graphic violence, PLEASE use a cut, and stick a warning somewhere in the post. What is not encouraged? Flames. Be honest and helpful without being mean. Take people's feelings into consideration and try to be helpful, or just don’t say anything. How do we work? If you have not completed your half of the trade, you *cannot* sign up for the next round or any subsequent rounds until that piece is completed. We say that this is "largely" a Secret Santa system because Joining Simply click on the ‘Join Community’ link. Unless we know you from elsewhere on the 'Net, we will e-mail you and ask to see a few pieces of your art just to make sure you are serious about joining us. Thereafter, you will know within 3-5 days whether you are accepted or not (possibly sooner, depending on Real Life). You cannot post in the community until you are accepted. If you join the community in the middle of a round, you will not be eligible to participate until the next round. | |
