I have an assignment for one of my classes which is to pick a song to defend as poetry in front of the class. It has to be by an American artist and some of the stuff by Simon and Garfunkel looked really good to me. However, I'm not entirely familiar with all of their lyrics, so if any of you could help, that would be SUPER!

It should have some sort of form, rhyme and meter and all that jazz, and the lyrics should be poetry on their own, not just with the music, meaning any lyrical rhymes or phrases should not be just to accent a certain phrase in the music. It should also have symbolismy stuff so I can decipher it and all.

I had a couple S & G songs in mind but I figured I would try and get some input from the experts. Thanks!

3 Summers ago (I think it was) I saw Art at a local radio stations SummerFest. The entire thing was poorly attended (Edwin McCain was there too, actually, and it was kind of neat to see him before he hit quasi-fame), so I made sure that I battle-axed my way right to the front.

In my overzealousness to get up near the stage, I never paused to think how completely awkward/still pretty fabulous it would be to have Art look at & sing DIRECTLY TO ME the entire set (he sounded gorgeous by the way, and performed lots of great S&G tunes, and did some solo stuff as well). Every time I went to snap a pic, he paused, look right at me, and smiled. It was mind-blowing. (Eventually though, I felt too awkward to take a picture, and forced my cousin to do it for me!).

After the show, I waited around at the side of the stage, along with some women in their mid-40s, in an attempt to get his autograph. They got a real hoot out of me waiting along with them, saying things like "I bet you weren't born til years after the LAST S&G album came out! Haha!" (I was only 17 or 18 at the time, heh). Alas, he never did make it over (at least not before I left), but we got to chat with his wife for a few minutes, and he waved to me as I walked away.

At the train station on the way home, I scored some huge poster that promomted the "summerfest", which was great because they were just a giant picture of Art's head :) I always look at my amazingly close-up pictures and smile.

This June, my sister took me to see S&G for my 21st bday, and that was more heartbreaking and breathtaking than I ever could have imagined. There are no humorous ancedotes (well, there are), and there are no words. <3

Obviously, I'm a huge S&G fan; they're the most amazing artists. Live from NY 1967 ... WOW.

Which Simon & Garfunkel Song Best Represents You?

'I AM A ROCK': You are a solitary character. You don't mix well with other people, possibly because you've had bad experiences with them, and the only person you really trust is yourself. You may feel trapped, and want to push yourself forward, but you know aren't quite the same as the people you see around you. You often have urges to 'be like everyone else', but you know you're just not like them. While you wish you get out and enjoy other company, at the same time you like to be by yourself. It's kinda like a lose-lose situation!

Edgar Allen Poe is quoted as saying something along the lines of (and I'm paraphrasing here) "The most poetic topic in the world is the death of a beautiful woman."

21

She took her tea weak with milk, often with
goat cheese spread on toast.

In the morning at the table, her beautiful
form beneath batik, she talked softly to me,
with a tiny crumb around her mouth.

Her lips were wet with tea

how unbearably kissable that region of her
breath

the center of my existence.

31

I catch myself in close-up looking into three concentric
rings.

If they combed the world to find me, covered all my
stomping grounds on land and raked the sea--
(only at longitude seventeen west
and latitude forty-eight north,
four hundred miles from the Brittany coast
in the hull of a night riding voyager,
loitering in the pantry
spooning pear juice from a tin,
remembering her love for pears,
and staring at rings in a tin sea,
would they find me)

66

Wintertime nighs. I highly suggest that if you have never attended one of their concerts, then you must...RIGHT NOW!!! lol. That is just how I feel. I do believe that Art Garfunkel IS the best singer in all of the history of the world. When he sang "Bridge over troubled water" I never felt so emotional or content in my life. I only hope I can witness greatness like that again. Long live Simon and Garfunkel, gods amongst gods!

Boxing Helena: A Review

Okay, I just finished watching Boxing Helena. All I really have to say is this: that is one weird movie.

Anyway, I don't think that the movie is really as bad as some of the reviews out there would imply. It's not great; but it's not all that awful. The acting in this film is sort of...hit and miss. Really, most of the actors do a good job; it's just that some of the lines they are given to speak are rather cheesy. The only one who acted really badly was the guy who played Helena's quasi-boyfriend. Anyway, this is the first full movie I've ever watched with Artie in it...although his character didn't really do much, his acting was spot on! And he looked cute. Bravo, Art!
