Has anyone ever done this? I usually take a taxi, because I tend to take flights that are BEFORE the crack of dawn. But I'm going to Palm Springs next week for my sister's wedding, and for once the flight times are in the middle of the day.

I know what stop to get out at, but where do you go from there? Is there a shuttle, or do you just walk??

(Do they even put up a page for earthquakes that small?)

Usually when I feel something like that, I go check quake.usgs.gov and there's nothing, but this time there's something! I feel less crazy for checking now.

Definitely the smallest earthquake I've ever felt!
Here's an email that got forwarded to me:
I just want to share a recent experience I had at the Safeway in Newark. As I came out, I was approached by someone who led me to believe he represented D.A.R.E. There was a table with a huge banner and the table was covered with brochures and other items from D.A.R.E. The first thing he said was, "Hi. Have you heard of DARE?" Everything he said and did gave the impression that he was from D.A.R.E.

They told me they were holding a fundraiser and asked if I was interested in purchasing a t-shirt or CD holder, etc... I said no, I don't need anymore clutter in the house, but I believe in the program and would like to donate. They said that's fine. I gave them $10 and they handed me a receipt.

After I got home, I looked at the receipt and on the back there is a disclaimer. It clearly states that they are a for-profit corporation and only 5% of the proceeds they collect will go to DARE. It also says that they are not allowed to accept monetary donations at all.

There was a phone number hand written on the front, so I called. Of course, there was no answer. I googled the phone number and it showed up on a bunch of online job ads looking for "self-starters who want to get rich quick."

That's when I realized I had been scammed. I immediately called Safeway and asked if they were aware that the organization in front of the store is a for-profit corporation and they said yes, but they thought it was a fundraiser so they approved it. I told them my story and they said they would look into it. The next day, my husband saw the same people out there, so it looks like Safeway doesn't care.

I emailed DARE and asked them about it. They said that they are aware of how the corporation is using their name, but have made it very clear to them that they cannot accept monetary donations. I told them my story and they said "they'd look into it."

Anyway, I just wanted to make sure you were all aware that this is not DARE. It is a sleazy "corporation" that literally recruits young adults who want to "get rich quick."

The reason I am posting this anyway is so I can share with you that MOST fund raising projects, unless run entirely by the organization itself, are like this. I used to be co-owner of a telemarketing company . . I know, I know . . .I apologize it was decades ago. Our contract was just that, and we were reputable, we got 95% AFTER expenses. If you want to donate to an organization, donate to them. Send them a check, to their main address.

Planet Fitness/Area around Cinedome 8?

I was driving down the freeway when I saw the Planet Fitness where the fabic store (I think??) used to be. I'm considering taking advantage of Planet Fitness's promotion, but I am concerned about the area at night. It doesn't appear to be well-lit (although I've only seen a movie there once over 10 years ago) although I would aim to work out there between 6:30-8:30 or so.

Thoughts? The place isn't open yet (the equipment won't come for another week or so) and so I can't judge how crowded it might be and everything. I like the idea of a not-crowded gym, but not so much if the area is deserted even at those hours at night.

A little north of Fremont in south Hayward, my husband and I just discovered City Bistro which is located 30162 Industrial Pkwy SW (at Whipple Rd) in Hayward. Its in the Target mall right off of 880. Its between Panda Express and Waffles.

Free wi-fi to start. The food is New York Deli inspired goodness. The portions are huge. We had soup and sandwiches and everything was just delicious. Last time we went a week ago I had a hot sliced pork sandwich with dipping sauce and it was wonderful. My husband has been equally impressed and is planning on Yelping it later.

September 14 (Sunday) 4:00PM - 6:00PM
Mai Lon Gittlesohn, Professor of Asian American Studies,Sacramento State University
Gregory Yee Mark, grandson of Marion Wong
Oaklander Marion Wong's 1916 silent film: The Curse of Quon Gwon
When she was 20 years old, Marion Wong started the first Chinese American film company in the West Coast around 1915-1921 called the Mandarin Photo Play Film Company. The following year, Marion directed The Curse of Quon Gwon. Loosely based on her family's 1911-1912 trip to China, Wong's film takes a feminist, but comedic look at the conflict between Old World/ New World family values. Mark and Gittlesohn will discuss their family's role in the making of the Curse of Quon Gwon, before a showing of the film at 5:15PM.
Free and open to the public. Please email pr@nilesfilmmuseum.org to reserve your seat.
I lived in Fremont for over 6 years (wow, I can barely believe it) and only recently moved across the bay to Mountain View. Good times! I'm going to try my best to keep watching the community, offer anything up I can from my experiences, among other things. Per my move, I've joined such communities as Mountain View, CA and Santa Clara County. Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I will say that hopefully you may find me on a future random weekend at places such as Suju's or Mission Coffee—I can't get ever forget the fresh-baked zucchini muffins @ Mission!

It's me again!

Any idea how much it costs to get movers within Fremont for "2 beds, 2 sofas, 4 tables & 6 chairs, 2 wardrobes and 1 [large flat-screen] TV?" My clients may be moving inside Fremont from one house to another and don't know what to expect, but neither do I. I expect they'll be willing to pay more to hire a very professional and polite company--they're from Japan and possibly not used to more casual American service standards (and thus I don't think the "hire some guys from the neighborhood" tactic will work too well).

Anyway, a ballpark figure would be great!

(I know Starving Students is no good, but if you have other recommendations, that'd be good too.)
