A high school valedictorian's plans to study medicine at a California state university have run headlong into the federal government's attempts to return him and his family to Armenia.

Arthur Mkoyan, 17, was 2 years old when his family came to the United States.

"I haven't been in Armenia since I was 2, so I don't really know anything about the place," said Arthur Mkoyan, 17. "All I've seen is just videos my mom has watched on the Internet."

Mkoyan's long-term plans were turned upside down one morning in April when two immigration officers arrived at the door of his family's house.

"They took both of my parents, and they released my mom because she had to take care of us, since me and my brother are minors," he recalled. "But instead they took my dad away to a detention center in Arizona."

Mkoyan, who has a grade-point average above 4.0 -- extra credit for Advanced Placement classes makes that possible -- is set to graduate next week from Bullard High School in Fresno, California. Watch students from Arthur's school talk about his case »

Ten days later, Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to deport him and his family to the Armenian capital city of Yerevan, the same city his family fled in fear 16 years ago.

2:23 pm - The "Blue Book" at ArmenianHouse.org

ahousekeeper
The electronic version of "Treatment of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire" by James Bryce is now available at the ArmenianHouse.org Electronic library. This version keeps page numeration as in the original, so it can be used as a source for citations in academic works.

JAMES BRYCE,
1st VISCOUNT BRYCE

(1838 – 1922)

British jurist, historian, diplomat and politician. Also well-known as an alpinist, Bryce climbed Mt. Ararat in 1876 and later published a travelogue called Transcaucasia and Ararat (1877). From 1907 to 1913 he served as Her Majesty's ambassador to the United States.

The most notable of his works concerning the Armenian question is the collection of eye-witness accounts on the Armenian genocide, compiled with the help of the famous historian Arnold J. Toynbee and published by the British government in 1916 under the title The Treatment of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire, 1915-16 (also known as “Blue Book”).

This work still angers the deniers of the Armenian genocide and all possible means are being employed to discredit its factual accuracy. For example, in the original version of the book the names of the correspondents were withheld for security considerations. That was used by some Turkish historians to declare the Blue Book as disinformation and wartime propaganda. However in 2000 historian Ara Sarafian published the critical and uncensored version of the book, thus once again confirming its importance as a primary source on the Armenian Genocide.

Dear friends,

This article contains one of the very few examples (probably the only one) of objective criticisms of LTP and his
camp. It's a good reading, and I think it's necessary for a complete picture of the
recent events.

Police SUV running over an unarmed protester and driving away.

As far as I know, there has been no internal police investigation of this. And
when the General Prosecutor sees this clip I am sure they'll dismiss it as a "provocation"
(as they did with all previous damaging evidence).

5:53 pm - LJ strike

ahousekeeper
Some folks suggest to go on strike on March 21st and refrain from posting and commenting. It is a response to cancelling basic account option for new users.

I'm joining them. First of all because it's a good opportunity to get out of the house, enjoy the spring and meet some LJ-users from Yerevan in real :)

12:12 pm - Police opening fire at the protesters

aregjan
Until now the Armenian police has categorically denied having opened fire
in the direction of the protesters. This video shows masked policemen chasing
protesters and then opening fire from AK-74 automatic rifles with tracer rounds
at them, killig at least one person, and then calmly walking away from the scene.

p.s. here is the actual statement of the Prosecutor-General's spokeswoman (from www.armenianow.com):
“The preliminary investigation will establish all circumstances of the deaths. I can state basing on the data of the preliminary investigation available as of today that no shot was fired in the direction of the demonstrators even during the mass unrest,” Truzyan said, adding that to quell the riots police used tear gas and tracer bullets fired solely into the air.

Those who still take seriously the statements of the Armenian police
need to read this. Soon we'll be told that Levon Ter-Petrossian has
conspired with Darth Vader himself to use the Death Star in order to seize power
in Armenia.

Armenians ‘Hypnotized By Ter-Petrosian’

Former President Levon Ter-Petrosian and his allies resorted to a mass hypnosis of the population and other “psychological tricks” to muster popular support for their bid to topple Armenia’s leadership, Prosecutor-General Aghvan Hovsepian said on Friday.

The address of the Human Rights' Ombudsman of Armenia

(from http://www.ombuds.am/main/en/9/18/1281/)

Statements

Human rights defenders position on the existing situation in the country
03/03/08

1. Even from the pre-electoral campaign period, the public activities of different political bodies resulted in the atmosphere of intolerance in our society. Unfortunately the calls for tolerance, made both by competent international organizations and by the Human Rights Defender were ignored. Even more, the atmosphere of intolerance turned into mutual hatred after the tragic events on the March 1.
2. The events of March 1 started from the forced dispersal of the demonstrators in the Azatutyun square early in the morning. It was officially announced that there was an accumulation of weapon in the place of demonstration, and Police officers simply tried to inspect the area but faced tough resistance.
The Human Rights Defender’s position is that the authorities should clarify some issues. Notably, who, when and under what circumstances there was made a decision to disperse peaceful demonstration by using force early in the morning of March 1, whether the demonstrators were presented an official warning of corresponding searching and whether the participants refused or resisted, and whether the use of force was adequate to the situation.

3:37 pm - About Armenians of Hamshen

ahousekeeper
A speech by historian and turkologist Lusine Sahakyan about the history, language and the current situation of Hamshenci Armenians in Turkey. There is a Hamshentsi folk song in the last part of the playlist. The speech is in perfect Armenian, so that would be a good practice for those who know Armenian but hear it rarely.

2:10 pm - Wilson arbitration docs now online.

ahousekeeper
The text of so-called «Wilson arbitration» on the boundary between Turkey and Armenia (the legendary «Wilsonian Armenian», remember?) is now available online at archives.genocide.ru both in the form of electronic text and microfilm scans from the U.S. archives.

Check also a short intro by Ara Papyan — former Armenian ambassador to Canada — which provides more details about what it is all about.

Feel free to distribute this information over mailing lists, forums, blogs.

10:10 am - Deconstructing the "Turkey an ally" myth.

ahousekeeper
For the last few days Groong has been full of anti-Armenian, anti-resolution crap from American and Turkish media. The main argument by Turks and their allies is: Turkey is an important ally for the U.S. and Armenian genocide bill hurts their relations. The same is told about Israel: strategic partners, blah-blah-blah.

Whenever you hear such crap, here are some counter-arguments for your use:

1. If Turkey is so much pro-Israel, how come Hitler's Mein Kampf became a national bestseller in Turkey 2 years ago? The infamous The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is very popular with Turkish buyers too.

2. How can a «strategic ally» [sic!] of Israel threaten to harm it's Jewish community, especially given the fact that these Jews are Turkish citizens?!

3. How can Turkey be an «important ally for Iraq campaign» if it prohibited the United States to use its territory to attack Iraq back in 2003? (Not that I'm a fan of Bush's Iraq campaign, but this «Iraq campaign ally» thing is a total lie). Moreover, it was Turkey who was buying oil from Saddam, thus violating UN embargo.

4. «America uses Incirlik military base in Turkey» thingy... Well, yeah, Americans use Incirlik and in turn provide tens of million dollars to Turkey in form of military aid annually.

5. If Turkey is pro-American and pro-Israeli, why is the «Valley of the Wolves» movie so popular in Turkey and has been praised personally by Erdoghan. If you don't know: that's a film about good Turkish commandos successfully fighting against bad-bad-bad Americans and and even worse Jews in Iraq.

There are more examples of Turkish hypocrisy, but well, these should be more than enough for a regular chit-chat session :)

P.S. Feel free to distribute, if you find it appropriate

Did anybody catch Jon Stewart on the Daily Show talking about the Genocide bill? He did a considerably long excerpt on his show about the topic and I must say he did quite a good job bringing it to the front-burner (and made it funny too). Huge applause for him.
Anyway, can anybody find a clip of that online somewhere?

12:02 am - Those two women in Iraq...

bobquasit
Was I the only one who was shocked to hear that the two women who were shot and killed in Baghdad were Armenians?

Apparently private masked security guards from Australia who were working with Coalition forces opened fire on their car, using US-supplied weapons. The two women were instantly killed, while two children in the car survived. The guards left the scene without checking the victims.

2:20 am - The irony of denial

ahousekeeper
It's ironical that Turkish fierce and hysterical denial campaign made much, much more publicity for the Armenian cause than any Armenian individual or organization would ever be able to achieve. Actually Ankara's lobbying money works for us rather than for Turks.

1:53 am - News

scwolf_10k
The U.S. government is reaching out to Turkey after a congressional panel's vote to label World War I-era killings of Armenians as genocide. The Bush administration says the bill will harm U.S.-Turkey relations.

The son of a journalist killed earlier this year after calling the massacre of Armenians genocide was convicted Thursday of insulting Turkey's identity for republishing his father's remarks.

Thought I'd share.
