Anyone else ever watched the two [utterly out of continuity] Doctor Who movies made in the 60's? Namely, Dr. Who and the Daleks and Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150 AD?
I recently "obtained" them and [sort of] watched them. Aside from Peter Cushing behaving like an absent minded mad scientist (one of my favorite roles for that man), the noticeably high production values and the lush Technicolor... I personally found little redeeming value in them.
Having Cushing introduce himself as "Dr. Who" made me feel funny and it all went downhill from there. Having had seen both the original serials, The Daleks and The Dalek Invasion of Earth some time before hand doesn't help as both original serials are much better in terms of characterization, pacing and suspense. (I still think The Dalek Invasion of Earth is one of the best Old Who serials ever.)
Also as a random aside, I find it interesting who Old Who was often a bit more serious when it came to explaining things via Science as opposed to Later Who. Some of the First Doctor serials even went so far as to try to introduce various scientific and historical concepts to the kiddies. (As opposed to New Who which adopts a far more cavalier approach to the way it portrays its fairy magic science. Not to slag off on New Who, of course, since a lot of Old Who did the same thing.)
I think, basically, what I am trying to say in this post, is that I love the First Doctor and am disappointed in myself for not having an LJ icon to properly portray this effectively.

Although he has not been asked, actor Bill Nighy said that if he ever was asked, he'd consider taking on the lead role in the BBC's Doctor Who.
Bill Nighy for Eleventh Doctor, y/y?
(Especially if he played it like his "Love Actually" character: "Hey kids, don't buy drugs! Become a rock star and get 'em for FREE!")

The Advent countdown is on the Doctor Who mainpage, if you like that sort of thing.
However, the mainpage also has a huge *ahem* Spoiler that you can't miss, if you don't like that sort of thing.
