Name:Are You Smart?
Website:Members
About:This used to be a community where we were pretentious enough to claim to objectively judge your intelligence by what you wrote on the application form. But we figured that didn't work, as it was...well, pretentious and membership was the end in itself which results in an empty nest.

So now this is a community that simply encourages intelligent discussion and sharing of ideas with a critical focus. It's abit like those intellectual internet forums on LJ. Some suggestions for posting topics are:
  1. Advertisements for various initiatives and creatively/intellectually oriented activities/forums/conventions
  2. Art- critique, aesthetics and theory and of course again your own
  3. Current affairs, news and politics
  4. Editorials, feature articles, rants, literary essays, tidbits and trivia
  5. Poetry, fiction, any literary creative pursuit
  6. Questions of and about philosophy
  7. Science- theories in physics, chemistry, alternative models
  8. Sociology and psychology, behavioral sciences, studies of cultural movements
In other words, go nuts! Actually, that's not what I wanted to say- this really isn't quite a free-for-all. Speaking of which:

Community rules:

We have to have some basic criteria for both behavior and guidelines to posting otherwise the community will flounder directionlessly and fall to drama and whatnot, so:
  1. Being smart- Since this is a community about intellectual stimulation, keep the question "what kind of discussion value will my post hold?" in mind first and foremost.

  2. Being rational and reasonable- You'll be expected to meet a certain level of consistency and rigor. That is- if you make a propositional statement, you'll have to be able to either back it up, be aware of where your position comes from, or be prepared to review and amend your position if it is found insufficient. This applies at all times within this community.

  3. Being relevant- When replying to a post, try to be constructive (obviously the first two guidelines apply), whether you're criticising it or agreeing with it. From 2), this especially means no ad hominems.

  4. Being respectful- Moderators of this community reserve the right to take action where deemed necessary. This will generally mean if we think a discussion is becoming inappropriately hostile and non-constructive. If you fall afoul of the process and feel you're being unfairly treated, feel free to explain why- preferably while not clogging up the comments section or the posting space. If the situation is not rectified, or repeats itself too often, this will be taken as an indication that you don't get along with the community, and will thus be ejected.

  5. Being considerate- We hope that you know and adhere to some basic social guidelines of cohabitation and cooperation, so don't expect to get away with being rude and anti-social. After all, if you're part of this community, you want to be here, right? :D

Since we've got standards, we also have this membership application thingo! It used to be this big long multi-sectioned thing (like this user-info) that took me 5 hours to complete, but now it's very simple and informal:

The application process:
  1. Answer the following two questions in any way you deem fit: 1) Tell us something about yourself and/or your interests. 2) How do you define intelligent?
  2. Post the answer to this community as a friend's only post with the subject "Application".
  3. Other people will be given a chance to comment and approve/disapprove, then the moderators will eventually either let you in or reject you. If you are rejected, feel free to try again.
Note: for the time being, license to posting on this community is conditional on your attempting this application.

I think that should be about it. After all that, don't be afraid, jump in and have fun!
