first of all I’m sorry if OT posting isn’t allowed in this community, but there’s no other way for me to do this; just delete this if it isn’t appropriate.

I’m a fanfic reader and occasional fanfic writer myself, so what did I pick for my thesis in communication sciences? Fan Fiction, of course. I designed a survey to find out more about our writing habits and media use; it takes about 10 minutes to complete.

2:45AM - Question! On Elvish dialects... (I didn't know where else to post this)

I'm rereading the trilogy! It's been far too long, and I love the books more every time. Anyway, I finished Fellowship today and started The Two Towers, and I ran into a question...

Silvan Elvish: is it a language or a dialect?

They mention it explicitly in Lothlorien. On multiple occasions, it says that Haldir speaks in the Silvan tongue, and that Legolas replies in kind. I think it mentioned either Galadriel or Celeborn speaking it also. I had previously been of the understanding that Silvan, as a language, had died out and been replaced by Sindarin (a belief perpetuated by the Encyclopedia of Arda). On this reading, however, I faltered.

On every other occasion, when a character was presumably speaking Sindarin (what I assume is the common form of Elvish) it was only noted as being Elvish. When a song was sung in Quenya, it was noted to be such. Silvan is tagged specifically in Fellowship. When I looked this up on the Encyclopedia of Arda, they confirmed what I had previously thought, that Silvan had died out and everyone spoke Sindarin. They also listed Silvan on a tree of branches of Elvish in two places--as a dialect of Sindarin and as a dialect of Nandorin. But they also have an entire entry dedicated to Silvan Elvish, where it is treated as a proper language and not just a dialect of another one. For that matter, if it's a dialect and not actually a language on its own, why bother denoting it as Silvan?

So... what's your verdict?

Note: Hi! I'm really new. this is my first attempt at fanfic though I'm an avid reader. I love Melpomaen and am also fond of Glorfindel/Erestor pairings. I have noone I can ask to beta (Seriously, I cannot imagine asking my husband. *lol*), therefore I would appreciate any feedback whatsoever. Especially about the overall style - too much detail/not enough? Balance of description vs. speech? And yes, I apologise for using the 'lost elfling' (TM) plothook, but I like that kind of thing. :) I guess this is more of a prologue really. The rest of the story won't make sense without it.
