Funny yet depressing
You Know You”re An Architecture Student When...

A litany of depressing behavours.

* The alarm clock tells you when to go to sleep.
* You're not ashamed of drooling in class anymore, especially during Structures lectures
* You know what Superglue tastes like.
* You celebrate space and observe your birthday
* Coffee and Red Bull are tools, not treats.
* People are nauseated just by smelling your caffeine breath.
* You are surprised when you see a new building in your school.
* You think it's possible to create space.
* You've slept more than 20 hours non-stop in a single weekend.
* You fight with inanimate objects.
* You've fallen asleep in the bathroom.
* Your brother or sister thinks he or she is an only child.
* You've listened to all your CDs in less than 48 hours.
* You're not seen in public.
* You lose your house keys for a week and you don't even notice.
* You've brushed your teeth and washed your hair in the university's bathroom.
* You've discovered the benefits of having none or very short hair, and you've started to appreciate inheriting baldness.
* You've used an entire role of film to photograph the footpath.
* You know the exact time the vending machines are refilled.
* You always carry your deodorant.
* You become excellent at recycling when making models.
* When you try to communicate, you make a continuous and monotonous whine.
* You've danced YMCA with excellent choreography at 3 am and without a single drop of alcohol in your body.
* You take notes and leve messages with a rapidograph and colour markers.
* You combine breakfast, lunch and dinner into one single meal.
* You see holidays only as extra sleeping time.
* You've got more photographs of buildings than of actual people.
* You've taken your girlfriend (boyfriend) on a date to a construction site.
* You've realised that French curves are not that exciting.
* You can live without human contact, food or daylight, but if you can't print it's chaos.
* When you're being shown pictures of a trip, you ask about the human scale
* You can use Photoshop, Illustrator and make a web page, but you don't know how to use Excel.
* You refer to great architects (dead or alive) by their first name as if you knew them (Frank, Corbu, Mies, Norman).
* You buy 50 dollars worth of magazines that you haven't read yet.
* When someone offers you a Bic pen, you feel offended.

Today in lecture...

I was so out of it I slipped into unconsciousness, had a quick dream about cooking, in it debated olive oil types with a chef and (and this was the kicker) looked down at my notes to see I'd written down the chef's recommendations in the middle of a sentence about city planning in 16th Century Europe. And never stopped taking notes.

...so I drank another Red Bull.

yep
almost the exact same here. minus the chef.
sometimes i do tend to dream about food (considering how the energy drinks drive my stomach crazy)..then look down and it says "turkey" in the middle of my notes.

I call him "The Le" or "Lecor" and everyone's gotten to the point where they know what I'm talking about. I have another friend who calls him "buzie" though

Yeah, sounds like me.

Um, maybe it's just me, but I can't figure out why everyone freaks out so much about Bic pens. I like them, they're good for taking notes. I'm not going to use them in my drawings, I can't see why the professors have an aneurysm when they see Bic pens anywhere near the plans.

its a matter of habbit i think. i havent touched a bic pen for about 10 years. i started buying pen sets at a rather young age and now a days i cannot think about touching something else. i guess it comes with the idea & touch of a heavy pen compared to a plastic bic.
give it once a try you'll feel it :)
btw RedBull has in The Netherlands the past year a promo going on for architecture firms. if you apply to it they bring you a cooling box + redbull for free a mont long + they refill it every week (with redbull girls)...

This hurts it's so true. I would only add that when you do have time to sleep you dream about your projects and the things you have to do.

Very true, and I'm not even in the official program yet. My trip to NY this summer was funny because I was the only one who knew how to use the camera...

Wait till your in practice, the lifestyle of the architect is one of pure sadomasochistic behaviour, but hell maybe that’s why we do it.

Working till two in the morning for no overtime
Taking abuse from all on site
Having to talk with structural engineers!
A quiet night out consists of 8-10 pints
Conversation revolves around work
Partners/lovers work in either education or health care
Spending hours designing someone else's project when a dead line is near
Accepting that spell checkers don't know what word your trying to spell
The PA's don't know what word your trying to spell
Your vocab has words that the general public don't know exist
You get strange looks for looking longingly at a rather nice section of brickwork
The public hates the buildings you love

Still it's the best job in the world...............

.........Honest........

It's to early though this morning and I have only two hours to produce 10 drawings and my girlfriend is still at home asleep, plus music has been band in the office!

Here's to love, life, architecture and my next cup of coffee....

J's

My favorite one is the one about the BIC pen, considering I spent $57 on 2 mechanical pencils and 4 pens today.
Damn, they are great pieces of machinery; well worth the price. When I saw my roommate using my new pen to take down notes after I came back from the bathroom, I wanted to X-acto him in the ear! I am very protective of my tools. Let him use his crapy BICs.

that's it, i'm printing it and putting it on the wall over my desk, next to the one saying "as soon as the rush is over, i am going to have a nervous breakdown. i work hard for it, i owe it to myself and nobody is going to deprive me of it."
maybe i should show it to my new roommate, it's her second week as an architecture student, she could still change her mind and go for something else ;)
