Got me a car, then, and surprise! - it's the same as last year. Not just the same make and model, the same, identical car. Plus a few extra scratches.

Went out to do some running around Aredhiou, where access to the mountains is seemingly the easiest; because before you know it, you're halfway up the Troodos. Oops. Ran into another little lithic scatter, which was great - there are a couple of essential things I'll need to change in my interpretations from the last few papers, as I'm starting to understand what people were doing in certain places and why they were not in others, and that's pretty much all I could expect from this season. But I do love how I can look at an aerial photograph, or even just a map with geology and hydrology layers on top of the topography, and tell you where a site will be. "Site," of course, remains this dubious entity created by archaeologists unaware of, or not interested in, the landscape approach and ephemeral hunter-gatherer activity, but I feel confident enough in what we have seen so far to call a lithic scatter a site, to call a Johnny that consists of more than a single piece of chert a site. A quarry is a different matter, and that's where Carole's and my approach to definition differ - hers is a technological one, defining quarrying activity by the presence of primary reduction materials, while mine requires at least the presence of locally outcropping raw material to qualify (we always clash about Politiko Kamaras, where I can't see any source to justify the material). But that's for another time to disect.

Just did a bit of hiking around today, as I couldn't really face any more archaeology and needed some time to think. As I left the car, with its little note with my phone number and a "Be Right Back" to ensure any potential passerby that I didn't just dump a stolen car by the side of the road (see last year's exciting event of receiving a phone call from the rental agency while I was on top of a mountain), I had all this anger stored up inside me that wanted to get out, that needed either a mountain-top scream or some peace and quiet to dissolve. So I walked, straight south, seeing nobody, hearing nothing but the wind and some distant farm noises, and I got most of it out of me. I don't even know where it came from this time. It's been a good week - reading up on a lot of things, making sense of old publications and their usefulness in my current research, feeling confident about shaking my head at some interpretations of the old literature; going to the beach, too. On top of that, I've been getting some informal lessons in geomorphology from Jay, who is probably way too patient with my desperate attempts to get my head around those complex processes of landscape change. Awesome guy. He took me out to the Karkotis Valley, where he was going to study a section and grab some charcoal for C14, and explained the entire landscape to me. The amount of stuff that I learned in this one day surpasses almost everything I learned in terms of archaeology in the last year. Seriously. He also offered me detailed GIS contours, rivers and geology for the entire project study area, which will finally allow me to do some serious data manipulation (once I manage to build that DEM I'll need to get started...), and added all sorts of useful extension and extra software that might come in handy. And he's just a really nice guy. So I've been positive recently, feeling pretty good about research, about my place in it, and about the decision to give it all up for the greater good (my greater good - because it still kills me a little every day); the anger was surprising.

But after climbing up a pretty steep cliff (the word slope is probably not even appropriate anymore at 75%) just to get to the top of a hill (and facing a potential 50m fall to the bottom every step of the way), it was all good. The views were amazing (pictures another day). I never understand people who judge the climbing of a mountain for the sake of climbing a mountain as a futile exercise - if it's not the views or the challenge of the ascent that make it worth it, the necessity to focus every thought on not falling to one's death is a very cleansing experience. Nobody forces you to do it, in any case.

I found a randomly crashed smiley-face kite in the middle of nowhere. Made me laugh. I wish Google Earth could pick that up.

Off to Paphos tomorrow morning to see Carole. Will finish up some image work, share some pictures (including the one of me being covered in yellow ochre - which makes me look fake-tan orange - and crouching on the biggest piece of umber I've ever encountered - it's a sight!), and go and see Alan's site at Ais Yiorkis. Maybe pop up to Aspros if there's time and interest. I'll probably get horribly lost.

Back on Sunday!

EDIT: Should I eat more? Hm. I had a slice of bread with raspberry jam for breakfast, some ice cream in the afternoon, and a nectarine for dinner. That's gotta be enough to deal with the calorie expense of hiking for 7.5km, right?

Waiting for my haircolor to finish setting before I can rinse it out.

We are playing tonight, at Crash Mansion, a place I have not been before. I hope the fans (the bunch that really do like us and loyally attend most of our shows) dig the new material.

I like gigs on Friday nights, since I have off on Fridays, I have lots of time for all my pre-show rituals: guitar string changing (these current have been on since the road trip to Buffalo two and a half months ago, and are sounding tired), hair coloring, touching up my clothes, printing setlists, etc.

Just had a pair of delicious salmon burgers for lunch, topped with melted sharp cheddar, honey mustard, and sweet pickle slices from the farmer's market, and honey mustard, paired with a few glasses of a snappy sauvignon blanc. I am such an unadulterated foodie.

Now to head downstairs to pour some of the coffee I made whilst my hairs were darkening, and then into the shower to rinse...

41. The Lost Constitution, by William Martin. 752 pages. (2007)

Grade: B+

This is a novel, with murders, about the second amendment, and about several searches for a "lost" constitution - a draft copy annotated by several Founding Fathers as to what they REALLY meant.

A fun ride, and a paean to New England.

Time:11:39 pm.

I am NOT happy about it.

The graphics are horrible, the design is horrible and looks ready-for-massive-ads, and the Playlist (and I had a large one, of over 900 songs) is now a subscriber-only feature. And limited to 200 songs per playlist.

If they don't revert soonish, I'm deleting my account there.

Time:2:25 pm.
No spoilers except: MUWAHAHAHA! I was right!

ANYWAY!

All in all, I give this series a pretty solid thumbs up.  As much as I like it as an idea, I tend to give a lot of the "girls with guns" anime a pass, as they tend to be an excuse for rabidness and extreme fanservice.  There are a few fanservice moments here, but not too many, and the character designs are pretty understated and respectful, even when they do show some skin.  In addition, Madlax herself seems designed to be a little more muscular than the other chacters.  It also has a wide variety of female characters, both fighters and otherwise, all of whom are pretty well developed and easily identifiable.

I can't really think of much to say that isn't purely spoilery that I didn't say in my first post, so I'll just skip talking about things like plot.  While my capslock squee is probably noted for being set off by every little thing (it really isn't, I just try to only read/watch things that will set it off!) I should note that it was out in full force through most of the series, as most of what could set it off was present.  Take that as you will.  It can be slow in parts, and you have to pay attention, but it's worth it.  In a lot of ways, you're better off not really thinking about it and not trying to figure out what's going on, as you'll just give yourself a headache and start missing things.  It comes together on its own as long as you pay attention.
It does tend to randomly introduce interesting little quirky things that are never explained, such as why Madlax will randomly change into an evening gown for battle, but those somehow only cause mild amusement, not irritation.  Also, the soundtrack is amazing and at least part of the plot revolves around Sooper Speshul Books.  See the "capslock squee" part above.

And now I must hunt down the other parts in the studio's "girls with guns" series.

So I've always wondered why people make a big deal out of Stonehedge. I mean, its not really that impressive...if anything its embarrassing, I thought, my ancestors were nothing but a bunch of ooga boogas who made rocks stand up. I mean, it was erected right around the time of the pyramids, which are far more impressive.

But I checked out a documentary on it and its a very interesting mystery. We know virtually - nothing - about it except that it was made approximately around 1000 AD and that its located in England. There are other similar, less large sites around the area so I'm venturing to guess that it was made for some sort of religious ceremonies although I'm not discounting that it was some sort of "computer- clock" that had to do with the seasons. They say that lots of myths surrounding it connect it to Druids (and even some 12th century texts) but we don't really actually have evidence of that.

Basically the whole time they summarized this: We Don't Know Anything About It.

In any case, the legend/myths go on...some people say that they were sites for alien landings...which I love speculatory crap like that, I eat it up...its why I'm a huge fan of Stargate. However, I really don't buy into those for the sake of sticking with academia/being taken seriously.

some simple things about the day:

-the continental breakfast was delicious!  fresh pastries, fatty yogurt with seeds and berries, cheeses (brie!), meats, seeds, dried fruits, juice, coffee, tea, milk, fruit. AH! yummy as hell.l

-i slept all morning/afternoo, as I was up all night with jetlag issues.

-3pmish is their cut off for shipments. I was too late to meet todays shipment, and they dont ship on weekends here, so i was asked to pay more than 300$ canadian to ship one parcel to poznan, and it wouldnt get there until after I was picked up. needless to say, I walked around london all day with TOO MUCH LUGGAGE. intense.

- I shopped. I am tempted to go through a list now but I'm kinda pooped and need to recharge

-I ate: not alot. I had a smoothie at Cruss (?) and I had a chocolate and strawberry crepe at a stand called "Portobello crepes", which is in the portobello market in Notting Hill.

-travelled through: notting hill and the portobello market. lots of touristy stuff, jeez. There were some awesome dress stores on...the street that connects notting hill's main drag to portobello. There was also a tank girl store, as in everything in the store reminded me of tank girl. I bought a purple canvas pack for my field gear there.

more later! im just pooped

in other news:

-Minou broke through the screen window last night because she saw something alive that caught her attention.
!!!! I miss you Minou, you fucking nutter!

-my brother googled locations in London where I can see Dark Knight. I really might skip the club and go straight for batman...

Subject:Announcement re my next Forgotten Realms trilogy
Time:2:50 pm.
As I've mentioned before, I've contracted with WotC to write another Forgotten Realms trilogy that will build off of the events of The Twilight War (which will be complete with the release of Shadowrealm at the end of this year).

I can't say anything more about content at this point, but I can reveal that the series is scheduled to be released in trade paperback format, with a subsequent mass market paperback release. I'm very pleased by this. Trade isn't hardcover, true (that was an option for a time, but WotC opted for trade) but it will still provide readers with a more durable, substantial format that fits nicely on bookshelves. Trade also is more affordable than hardcover. I think they retail for somewhere in the neighborhood of $15, though Amazon discounts them to around $11. And in these economic times, affordability is nice.

Anyway, I'm excited by this and hope you are, too. Feels like a bit of a minor breakthrough to me. Resurrection was a hardcover release, true, but that owed entirely to having Bob Salvatore's name on the cover (and the sales that go along with that). This format change feels more mine, more earned than given.  Thanks to all of you who've supported my writing for so long.  I really appreciate it.

Anyway, this is one of the two big (well, big to me) announcements I've been holding for a long time. I expect to be free to announce the second one next week, or so I'm told.

Nights like last night make me wish that I had spent more time with certain people while I still had the chance. Let's hang out more this summer, ok?

Dark Knight was an interesting experience for me, I must say.

I was expecting to absolutely love the movie, but be indifferent to disappointed with Heath Ledger.

Boy was I wrong.

Heath absolutely blew Jack Nicholson away with that performance. And as Max put it, "but you ADORE Nicholson as the Joker!" I do. I still do. But Heath was just... mesmerizing. He did the crazy creepy thing... but there was also the laughter and the crazy wacky that Nicholson had. Heath's laugh... oh. my. goodness. He was absolutely perfect for the role. I just shutter to think what is going to happen for the third movie when he's not around.

The rest of the movie, however, failed to impress me as much as I would have liked. There were a few moments in the script that I thought were awkward and unnecessary... such as Joker's background story - or lack thereof. I like that you don't know exactly what made him this way - if there is an actual method behind the madness... it leads to too many questions. But I think that they could have demonstrated this lack a little better. I didn't like that he told his story only twice - a different story each time. It should either have been three times, to give the fact that he was unwilling to demonstrate the real reason he was like this, or none at all, to just get over it and move on.

I'm starting to like Christian Bale as Batman less and less. Now, this doesn't mean I don't still like him, he's just not omgamazing to me anymore. I do very much like that of all the Batmans he has the most demonstrative conscious. You can tell that he is disturbed and very stressed, as opposed to the "cool, suave" Batman portrayed in Schummacher's films. But I still love Michael Keaton's intellectual Batman. Not that that Batman was any smarter than this one... just the way that he carried himself - a much more reserved Bruce Wayne, is what I guess I'm getting at. But Keaton was scrawny... you can't really believe that he is the Bat out there beating the crap out of Gotham's scum... another plus for Bale.

BUT THE GROWL. I HATE the voice that he uses when he talks to Gordon or to anyone else while he is the Bat. I realize that it's an effort to disguise his voice, to sound intimidating, and to distinguish between Batman and Wayne... but I just really hate the sound and the way he thrusts out his jaw... I don't know, it just rubs me the wrong way.

Also. Maggie Gyllenhal (or however you spell it) wasn't as impressive as I was hoping. Albeit, she didn't have the largest role in the film, but I just didn't really relate to her. At least with Katie Holmes you could feel a pull towards Bruce Wayne/Batman, but in this one, she just seems dead emotionally. I wasn't convinced that she cared for Wayne OR Dent.

AARON ECKHART I LOVE YOU. What a relief that Two-Face is moving away from the Tommy Lee Jones giggling flamboyant retard. (TLJ, I know it's not your fault... damn you Joel Schummacher!) While I can understand that Batman Forever was an attempt to bring the Batman series back to a family audience, I just think that what they did to Two-Face was just too much. The whole premise behind Two-Face as a villain was that he never made a decision on his own. Heads you live, tails you die. It's as simple as that. In Forever, however (haha rhyme!) They had the coin, yes, they had the flipping of the coin, yes, but they changed it so that if Two-Face didn't get what he wanted (which was usually killing someone) he would continually flip the coin until he did. Not cool.

Also, the make-up for Two-Face is freaking awesome.

And the whole premise behind Joker's want of complete Anarchy - no rules - kill me, KILL ME! - so good, and it worked so well with Bale's portrayal of a Bat with a concsious.

Overall, a fantastic revamp of my favorite villain, along with a complete make-over of my 3rd to least favorite (worst - Dr. Freeze, then the Riddler) so that he could quite possibly be bumped to 2nd favorite (which is now held by Catwoman from Batman Returns). There were a few points in the script that made me cringe, but nothing overly terrible... and I will have to see it again from not-the-third-row to get a real gauge on the action sequences.

In conclusion: I have Max's pants in my car.

Subject:New guidelines for US museums acquiring antiquities
Time:2:03 pm.
From http://www.theartnewspaper.com/article.asp?id=8076

The US Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) has established a stricter set of guidelines for its member museums to follow when acquiring antiquities. These new guidelines suggest no works exported from their country of origin before 1970—the date set by the Unesco convention on the illicit trade of the same year—should enter North American collections.

But while AAMD advises member institutions that they “normally should not acquire a work unless research substantiates that [it] was outside its country of probable modern discovery before 1970 or was legally exported…after 1970”, it leaves the decision of whether to acquire works of unknown provenance up to individual museums.

Subject:Jo Stafford & otr podcasts
Time:12:38 pm.
I meant to post about this yesterday.

Jo Stafford died at age 90. She had a long singing career from the Pied Pipers to her own solo work. She was known as "GI Jo" for serenading WWII soldiers with the USO. Her obits are on Washington Post and LA Times but I first heard about in the Thrilling Yesteryear blog.

Trying to remember where I recognized the name (Smithsonian's "You'd be So Nice to Come Home to" collection), I came across a Big Band Serenade podcast episode on her music. There are a whole rafter of OTR podcasts, depending on your preferences. You can fly with the superheroes, fight alongside crime fighters, cry with the soaps, or dance along to the music. To paraphrase Victor Comstock, that is the magic of radio.

Subject:Zombies In A Mall
Time:10:54 am.
Mood: awake.
Music:La prima vez.
Last night's Fear Itself was about zombies. It was a good one, too. I was really into it. There was a mystery to untangle, and I was trying to process all of the clues and figure out why the main character was still alive (because, obviously, there was something going on that was not what it seemed). My partner was with me, but she was in & out, taking the dog out, going to the corner store, etc. She knows I wait all week for Fear Itself, so she always makes sure I get to watch it. So, she had missed some of it and was trying to catch up.

"So..." she said, "is the only thing that zombies do is eat people?"

"Yeah," I replied, not looking away from the screen, Now, why didn't that zombie come after her? "They are mindless consumers." I replied, absently.

Out of the corner of my eye, I was my partner's head spin around as she looked at me aghast. "Zombies in a mall!" she exclaimed.

"Yeah, didn't you know? Zombies are a metaphor for mindless consumerism." I thought everyone knew that! Maybe they don't. So, I explained gave her some more background. "Zombieism is transmitted through a blood born disease or toxin. A living person gets infected when a zombie bites or scratches them. If the zombie kills them but doesn't eat too much of them, then they wake up and they are a zombie. Either that, or the zombie bites you and you survive, but eventually the toxin kills you and you become a zombie anyway. A zombie is dead, but the corpse is animated by the disease which is always hungry and is always running around trying to eat the living, even while its host body is decomposing."

Subject:The spirits are restless
Time:9:16 am.
Grandpa came shuffling up to me with a walker in my dream this morning. He was carrying a photo album. I hadn't seen him in years. We were on an empty street in an empty town of flat roofed houses.
I greeted him cheerfully. I had missed him. He said "You must find your grandmother's bones" then plopped open the photo album. It was full of pictures of clothing my grandma had sewn and sold over the years. He wanted me to find them. He talked to me for a long time, all about her. Things I didn't know before. Things I don't remember now... I just remember thinking "this is the most he's ever spoken to me in one sitting." In the dream, she had passed away and he was still shuffling around.

Out of all my grandparents, he shows up the most in my dreams... rarely, but the most.

Ever since I followed [info]telophase's link when she posted on it, Amazon has been pushing Deborah Chester's The Pearls on me. It is on the front page. It is in my "recommendations" list. It has invaded my Gold Box. Make it go away.

Subject:Tracing Tahitian Vanilla
Time:12:24 pm.
From http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/34243/title/Tracing_Tahitian_vanilla

Scientists have ascertained the pedigree of Tahitian vanilla, the orchid whose rarity and rich, sweet flavor distinguishes it from the widely used commercial vanilla. The discovery of the plant’s heritage could set off a custody battle between nations, researchers say.

The new analysis, reported in the August American Journal of Botany, places Tahitian vanilla’s origin in Central America, although today the plant is grown only in French Polynesia and doesn’t exist in the wild.

“I am concerned that this altogether could dispossess Polynesia of a patrimonial genetic resource,” comments Pascale Besse, a plant geneticist at the joint research center PVBMT Cirad and University of Reunion. Now that Tahitian vanilla’s parents have been identified, people could create “Tahitian” vanilla anywhere, diluting its value in the luxury and gourmet markets, Besse says. But that flavor doesn’t arise from genes alone, she adds, and the Tahitian environment may be central to the orchid’s distinctive bouquet.

They're having a walk on Saturday, so I'm going to that. If anyone is interested in getting involved with this club, let me know: I'm enjoying it so far. Its easier to get involved b/c they have events to participate in and they really do need more volunteers.
I only went to the first meeting the other day...its very fun.

Sunday I'm also doing something with them. Today I'm just taking care of a few phone calls and I'm going to relax until I see the movie tonight with a friend (given that a conflict we recently had is truly buried...sometimes friends have a way of saying things are okay and they're not...not really characteristic of her, but still).

I have an interview on Monday and I'm talking to someone on Sunday about job stuff...still, its ongoing and nothing is final.

Lynda and I just finished a Phonetic Scrabble Story. 100 points to the person who can decipher it and give me a summary of the story. Hint: It's not exactly phonetic, officially. If you sound it out, you can figure it out. Just remember that ph can sound like an f, and a kn can have a silent k. *L*
