Holy shit. This is officially the single most awesome thing that has ever happened to me. Dr. PZ Myers (yes, that Dr. PZ Myers -- officially the most popular science blogger in the whole fracking world in terms of readership) has listed my humble little blog, Ghosts of Minnesota, on his Facebook page among the blogs that he's a fan of. Yes, that's right. I have a fan, and his name is PZ Fuckin' Myers! |

Why so serious? Heath Ledger's Joker is fucking awesome. Waaaaay better than Jack Nicholson's. I'm not too sure about Christian Bale's Batman, though. He was passable in the last movie, perhaps because he didn't actually spend much screen time as Batman. He makes a great Bruce Wayne, but... I dunno. I think maybe it's the menacing growl he speaks in when he's wearing the costume. It just seems... off, somehow. But you know what the real treat was? The Watchmen trailer. Holy shit that looks awesome. There were two other trailers after Watchmen, but I cant for the life of me remember what they were for. After seeing that superhero movie trailer, I almost lost all interest in the superhero movie I was actually there to see. |

Iran, US, Israel, and all things fun So here is a summary of the current events surrounding Iran and try to see if you can figure it out. Its all a bit strange. Last week or so we had Israel doing some flight tests which was mentioned as an exercise that would be an attack on Iran. Iran showed off their missiles. Oil went fucking crazy, record high. US jumps in and says they will defend Israel, Iran says they will retaliate if attack, and talks about attacking any country that USA has their camp in, to jumpstart their attacks. Everything became a bit scary until... ...suddenly, everything changed. USA sends Burns to the pre-negotiation with Iran and the EU in regards to the nuclear issue, and it seems like a big deal, because USA was never directly at the same table in regards to these discussions. If that was not enough, there are rumors that USA might have a special interest group in Iran for visa processing and shit, which at the moment is handled by the Swiss, so this would be the first time since the 70s that USA officially has diplomats in Iran. While this is not confirmed by the US government, it hasnt been denied by them either yet. Both sides are being positive in their statements to the press. "We view the fact that a representative from the U.S. is there as a positive development. I hope this positive approach in shape and format also spreads to the content," Mottaki said.
"The United States doesn't have any permanent enemies," Rice said in response to a reporter's question on the unexpected move to send a diplomat to meet directly with Iran's negotiator Saeed Jalili in Geneva on Saturday. A democrat and a resolution are trying to pass a resolution to: The House Foreign Affairs Committee may soon begin considering a resolution offered by Reps. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.) and Mike Pence (R-Ind.) that would prohibit exporting petroleum to Iran and impose "stringent inspection requirements" on all people, vehicles, and cargo going in and out of the country. This legislation has sent off alarm bells throughout the peace and security community. So whats going on? Is this a sincere effort by the Bush administration to look for a diplomatic solution or is it just an empty gesture so that when war starts, they can claim they tried everything? Were the Israeli exercises an actual indication of possibility of a near war, or just to flex their muscles to make it seem like diplomacy is preferable for the Iranians? Was Iran's response to show they are willing to go to war if push comes to shove, a ploy to push oil prices up, or just trying to show that there were two paths out of this? How about the effect of this on the candidates? It almost seems like Bush does not really care about McCain. One of the differences between Obama and McCain was that Obama claiming that he will talk with Iran. While the current situation is not really what Obama was talking about, it still seems that it is easier for Obama to say that this is what he wanted. Bush always claimed he never cared about polls, and we know that he was not really concerned about politics of future candidates or the congress, is this a situation where this might actually be a positive trait to have? Israel has also going through some radical changes. They are speaking to Syria, Hamas, and Hezbolla. With Hezbolla, they recently released 5 Lebanese prisoners and a 199 dead bodies in exchange of the bodies of 8 Israeli soldiers, even though they initially were saying that no swaps would be made. How can we read this? Is Israeli seriously considering war with Iran, and this is its way of trying tone down Iran's influence in the region as much as possible, so that the war will be more to its benefit, or is it an actual progress towards peace in the region? The outcome of this weekend seems to have two different paths. Either towards peace and stability in the region or to war. Both paths seem to be realistic and only a few steps in either direction might have a domino effect and result in a bigger change. Only what will the change be? This is something I like to be positive about. The Bush administation has had a few major changes in personnel in the last few years and they might be more in tune and experienced with foreign policy. At the same time, there has been a lot of internal debates in the Iranian government and they might be looking for a positive way out of the nuclear issue. Bush's term ends this year and Ahmadinijad's term ends next year, and they may both want to leave a better legacy. I'm hoping the news for the coming weeks, in regards to Iran and USA, will be more positive. Good news has been something in low supply when it comes to the relationship between those two, and who knows, maybe its time now for a change. Like simple, small changes like this: "Partnering with the U.S. Olympic Committee, we invited 15 members of the Iranian national table-tennis team to the United States last week. This group included the first female Iranian athletes who've ever been to the U.S. on this program. In cooperation with the National Basketball Association, we'll bring the Iranian Olympic basketball team here next week for the NBA summer league," Burns told Congress today. |

This is a video of a police dog. This video is about twelve seconds long but I am completely captivated with it, for some reason.
I think that it's because I've been chased by these things before, but it's also interesting to see how a trained police dog will also turn on the people who have trained it:

The Origin of "Limbo" I already knew about a great deal about Limbo before I stumbled into this essay, but I still find the 'mythological genealogy' behind limbo to be pretty interesting. I've been listening to a series of audio lectures on religion and spirituality and they've consistently made the argument that organized religions are started as an initial attempt to correct social justices.
If that is true, then it is interesting to think about what they develop into after that. To me it has always seemed odd that some followers of an organized religion can use their spirituality in a way that it was never intended to be used for, and that they can use that spirituality to hyperbolize things in a way that is negative and counterproductive to the following of their faith.
One of the worst things that modern religion does is that it encourages people to preach at one another. I had a discussion with neuroticqueer about this, and we had a discussion over "fire and brimstone" personalities. If people really believe that they're trying to convince people that they're going to go to hell or some sort of unfortunate afterlife unless they repent, then why do they preach at them in such a negative way?
To me that makes absolutely no sense. I was talking about this with neuroticqueer about this (and he apparently wanted to become a minister at one point - so he's quite knowledgeable about this stuff) and we had a pretty good debate over this. As he has explained this, it has become popular to "preach" things and if people decide to ignore you then the burden is on them. And when the "Second Coming" arrives then the preacher is fine, but the preached are going to be damned.
I think that is a really stupid and selfish thing to believe. If people are legitimately interested in helping people, then wouldn't they take a more productive and uplifting attitude to doing this? Why do people like those in Westboro even exist? Wouldn't they be less interested in attacking people, and in cutting anyone down who takes a moment to listen to them? I would like to think so.
As Nietzsche has put it, people who tend to do these things aren't really interested in "saving" people. They aren't really interested in getting people to adopt a philosophy or a theology that will better their lives. And they aren't really interested in making this world a better place.
They are simply interested in reinforcing their own ego.
I see political interference into the narrative of limbo as something that is analogous to this cycle. It has always been picked-up by one myth or another as a narrative of social justice, but once it becomes mainstream enough it becomes used as a tool of oppression. It is very obvious what limbo in this sense has been turned into: a scare tactic. And I think that is horrible.
Here is the essay:
Harrowing of Hell: A widespread and popular narrative relating what Christ did after his Crucifixion and before his Ascension into heaven.
According to a myth circulated in the Middle East, a deity goes to the underworld and conquers its prince. Motivated by the belief that Christ had also descended into hell during the three days after his death, early Christian communities added it to the topography of the hereafter to which Jesus had descended after his death. Even so, it is only between the fourth and eighth centuries that this idea became and obligatory part of religious faith and was taken up in the creeds. The place of the descent into the underworld - limbo - was referred to limbus patrum (borderland of the fathers), as the Fathers of the Old Testament dwelled there (cf. limbus puerorum [borderland of unbaptized children]).
Especially important here would be the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus (third to fifth centuries), a widely popular "eyewitness account" that describes how Christ breaks open the gates of Hades and has the prince of the underworld bound. Then he leads Adam, Eve, and the other righteous souls of the old covenant out of limbo. In the early phase of the Reformation there was embittered discussion as to whether or not Christ himself had also experienced the sufferings of hell during his descent into the underworld.
In visions of the hereafter, in scholarly literature, and in religious poems and prayers, the descent of Christ is scarcely found as a separate theme. Limbo, however, did appear frequently in Romanesque and Gothic representations of the life of Christ (e.g., on Lent cloths); it was commonly portrayed as the jaws of hell, with the souls contained therein, and was held open by also appeared as a prison or a burning fortress.
The descent of Jesus into hell was present to the general consciousness of mainly through Easter tempts to keep some of the souls for themselves, and their later efforts to repopulate hell were expressed in thoroughly burlesque scenes. The gratitude of the released souls, whom Christ leads into heaven, was forcefully depicted. For all of them, including the innocent, had been previously handed over to the devils to be tortured. Although an authority such as Pope Gregory the Great had believed that the righteous among the Fathers had been held in confinement in a darkened cell without being tortured, the Middle Ages frequently made no distinction at all between torture in the real hell and torture in limbo. This can clearly be seen in the wording of all religious drama. Thus, for example, Jesus says for the devils in the so-called Easter play of Muri (mid-thirteenth century), as he liberates the souls from limbo, "You have destroyed them in a wretched and horrible fashion through the fire and fierce agonies of hell." And the souls reply that they called for the Savior in the fierce agony of Hell." Judas, Caiaphas, and Herod, however, must remain there forever.

Don't mess with Nasrallah credibility!! An important asset in Hasan Nasrallah's leadership over Hizbullah is his credibility. The Shiite leader has been known for doing what he promises. The belief in Nasrallah's credibility is shared not just by his followers in the Arab World but also by his enemy – the Israelis. During the 2006 War between Israel and the Lebanese Shiite movement, Israeli journalists glorified Nasrallah's credibility regarding the developments in the battlefields. His reports were more accurate compared to the Israeli military establishment's information. Thus, it came as no surprise when during the War, a poll conducted by an Israeli daily found that the majority of Israelis believed Nasrallah more than to their own leaders.

Since the war has ended, the Israeli authorities and especially the security/intelligence apparatus have been trying to damage Nasrallah's widespread credibility. The Israelis have been making efforts to disseminate false information on his deteriorating health situation and his internal problems in leading Hizbullah following the war. In January 2008, the charismatic Hizbullah leader said in a fiery speech that his group had the "heads" and "body parts" of Israeli soldiers, as well as "a nearly intact cadaver". "We have the heads, the hands, the feet and even a nearly intact cadaver from the head down to the pelvis," he said. "The Israeli army left behind the remains of the bodies of a large number of soldiers," said Nasrallah. At that time, the Israeli army denied these remarks. Nasrallah waited to prove his point until June 1…. On that day, Lebanese detainee Nassim Nisr, who spent six years in Israeli jails, was released. As Nisr returned to his homeland, Hizbullah handed the ICRC with some body parts of Israeli soldiers. The Israeli media and the military establishment were surprised by Nasrallah's move. Prior to Nisr's release, Israeli officials insisted there is no agreement with Hizbullah over a swap deal. The following day, the Israeli media had to quote Lebanese newspapers saying that Nasrallah proved his credibility once again and embarrassed the political and military leadership in Israel. "Hizbullah proves it was right when it claimed that it had the body parts of Israeli soldiers," an anonymous "security source" told the Beirut-based As-Safir newspaper. In sum, Shiekh Hassan Nasrallah has proved again that unlike many leaders in the Arab World, he is a man who honors his words with deeds. His recent comments about an imminent prisoners exchange deal with Israel should be taken seriously, despite Israeli denials….

At last Baby chicks have arrived! There is now a fluffy pile of sweet peepingness huddled under a lamp in my bedroom. I got a call at 5:56 am from the Post Office saying I had some baby chicks and I could pick them up at the back door. Knowing that time is of the essence in these matters, and since I wasn't sleeping anyway, I went down and got them. Too late, though, one of the babies was already dead and stiff when I opened the box. So I guess it is good I got extra. I filled their round plastic poultry waterer with warm water and then lifted the chicks from their traveling birth box and placed them around the water. They got in the water. So I quickly hooked up their heat lamp and positioned it over their box. Then I lifted all the chicks back out of the water and under the lamp. That seems to be what they needed cuz some of them are already eating and preening. There are yellow ones, orange ones, and black ones. One of the little black ones seems to be the runt. It's eyes aren't even open yet and it is all wobbly on it's feet. Maybe it will die, too. So, I'll be spending today hurrying up to finish moving the outside chicken coop. I've got to get it all moved and fortified before the babies will be ready to move outside. I don't remember how long it takes, but I have a feeling they will grow up quick. The cats are shocked. chick pix (not high quality) Current Mood: sleepyCurrent Music: peepingness |
