Learning Arabic

i want to strengthen my `ammiyya before heading back to egypt next year. i understand it much better than i can speak it, so i have the basics down. i stumble a lot on grammar/sentence structure. i'd also like to refine my vocab so i can hold better conversations. is there a CD/audio resource any of you can recommend?

Prayer Petition, English --> Arabic

Hello :)

My church is having a rather large celebration this Summer... In about a week, actually. And they want to incorporate foreign languages as part of the services. They know I've studied Arabic... But they also seem to think that 2 years of Arabic = fluent :(

Anyhow, they'd like me to translate this prayer petition into Arabic and read it during the service... Except I have to admit that, for the majority of the prayer, I could do no better than copying and pasting (and hoping) from a dictionary.

It's just one (run-on) sentence, but if anyone could help me translate this into Arabic (Standard, FusHa), or give tips on pronunciation, it would be unbelievably helpful!

(We pray) for Father Greg’s family and friends here present, and for those who are unable to be here today, in thankfulness for their devotion, support, and compassionate example.

So, it's a bit early for me to be worrying about it (I've only completed 1 semester of Arabic so far), but I think I've decided I'd like to study abroad once I have a slightly better handle on the language. My question for you fine folks is this:

Where should I go? Where can I find a quality program that won't completely ruin me financially?

A lot to ask, I know. I had considered this program a bit, but that seems like an awful lot. I can safely say I know nothing about any of these programs or schools or anything, so any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

grammar & case endings

my hobbit of an arabic professor didn't explain case endings last semester, and i am still horribly confused. what exactly are nominative, genitive and accusative cases? how do the arabic case endings (kasra, damma, etc.) correspond to each one? examples would be greatly appreciated.

Hi people. I've learned arabic for 2 years and now I have to translate an article about islam. It' s rather difficult for my language level and I faced with some difficulties in these sentences:

١=   من سرته حسنته و ساءته سىئته فهو مؤمن - حديس صحيح رواه الطبراني في الكبر عن ابي موسى٠

٢=   ليس هذا فحسب بل أن من رضي بهذه المعاصا كان عليه و سلم

٣=   اذا عملت الجطيئة في الارض كان من شهدها فكرهها كمن خاب عنها و من جاب عنها فرضيها كان كمن شهدها حديث حسن رواه ابو داود٠

٤=   حكم شرعي ليس بدعة ولا فكرا ولا تهمة٠

٥= كما أن احكام المرتدين مذكورة بابواب الردة من كتب الفقهة ولا يخلوا كتاب من كتب الفقهة من ذلك مهما كان مختصرا و الردة ليس تأريخا مضى سجاح٠٠٠

Please, help me to translate them into English.
Or if there's anybody who speaks russian and can translate them into russian...it would be wonderful =))

Hi all. The other day I was walking in Daliyat el-Carmel, and heard someone greet his neighbor with "saba7 el-ward". I know "saba7 el-kheir", for good morning, but not this expression. What did he mean?

I'm looking to supplement the instruction I get from my Arabic language textbook (Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya) and from the lectures I attend at university. I've found a number of websites that are meant to help students of the Arabic language, but I cannot find any instruction on these topics:

(Please excuse my transliteration; I don't have an Arabic keyboard)
--Jumla sifa, adjectival sentence
--fronted predicate in nominal sentence
--al-ism al-musuul, the definite relative pronoun (in other words, "al-lati," "al-lathi," and "al-thiin")

Hello, I don't have any Arabic so I would be very happy if anybody here could help me out with the "isfanğ" word. What can the word mean and is it a common, everyday kind of word or is it obsolete? I just wondered whether this word (at least in this form) actually exists and in what countries it is used. If there are several meanings you are aware of, could you please list them all. Many thanks for your help.

I just thought I'd let all of the Arabists on here, amateur and professional alike, that Edward William Lane's Arabic-English Lexicon (1863) is available for free on the Internet.

It is definitely the most extensive Arabic-English dictionary out there, but be warned that it is concerned primarily with Classical Arabic. Thus people doing extensive reading of the Qur'an, Hadith, Poetry and medieval texts will find it of great use. However, for those concerned with modern literature and media, it is out of date and a bit too cumbersome (stick with Hans Wehr).

Still it's a great resource and the probably the next best thing to لسان العرب.

I'm in my second semester of Arabic and currently we're learning everything there is to know about grammar and it's going a bit over my head (I've always hated grammar). The book we're using is Ahlan wa Salan and I've gotten a grammar book that helps a bit but I was wondering if any of you know of a good website that focuses on Arabic grammar and has good examples or exercises (mainly the cases of nouns and إنّ and كان).

Wacky Place Names

I'm reading Ibn Battuta and I'm encountering what appear to be place names that I can't find references for - any ideas what the modern equivalents would be for:

Mentioned as somewhere near India -كولم
Near Isfahan and Mashhad - تستر
Between Mashhad and Baghdad -صرصر

Could they not be places at all and instead be other parts of speech? Help?
