hi guys! after nearly two years of doing fancy goldfish, i have entered the realm of livebearers... i have a a group of month(ish)-old baby balloon mollies hanging out in a refugium (i am not going to set up a second tank for them), and wondered if anyone here was knowledgeable of how long they took to get tetra-sized? i know they are technically big enough to be released into the grass right now (maybe a third of a tetra big), but i would rather not risk them getting sucked by my filters or chomped on by overzealous gouramis. thanks! any fish doctors?
My friend gave me her betta, knowing that I would take better care of it then she was. I got in probably a half gallon container with absolutely nothing in it. I immediately asked for a ride to meijer and bought him a 5 gallon tank with a heater, gravel and plants to hide in. Having never been able to swim before he was a bit clumsy. He's gotten better but he seems unable to move his caudal fin. I cant tell if he just doesn't know how to use it or if he had become disabled from living in poor conditions. suggestions anyone? | | Friday, October 16th, 2009 | 6:40 pm [chaostrophy]

x-posted. Sorry, I need as much information as I can get.
In all of my new-found fish excitement, I decided to get my roommate his own tank and let him pick a couple of fish to go into it. In a 10 gallon tank we have 3 fake plants, a rainbow shark and 2 rosy barbs. The salesperson assured me they'd be fine together, and they have been since we brought them home. Soon after they arrived in their new home, we noticed the shark in one of the fake plants, worried that he/she was stuck and not knowing how long it'd been there (as we'd both gone to work and come back) we grabbed a net to "free" it from the plant. Turns out the shark was in the tree-like plant on purpose and once freed went right back in and has been there since. The water's warm enough at 76 so he can't be trying to keep warm...right? Anyhow, this little quirk has earned our little friend the nickname "Tree Shark" Is this normal? If not (and I really don't think it is) what's going on with him? Also, I know that my green-spotted puffers can live their entire lives in brackish water, but am told that they will be happier in full saltwater. First, is this true? And second, if the prior is correct, how/when do I change the water (gradually obvs) to make the transition as easy as possible for them? | | Sunday, October 11th, 2009 | 3:07 pm [synica66]

ASAP need help reguarding betta sudden attitude change
I have a 30 gallon tank with a group of rasboras and a betta & a few other creatures, whom my betta is not bothering. My betta used to hang out with the rasbora and they all swam together... they've been happily hanging out for months. I noticed about 10 minutes ago my betta had his fins flared and I started watching and he seems agitated and dove into the group of rasboras who all scattered and then I grabbed the fish food, fed them and tapped the glass (which I do to let them know they're getting fed) ... WHAT HAPPENED? I know different bettas have different personalities but I've had mine for months and he's been fine and dandy. Could there be a reason for the sudden change? Do I need to remove him from the tank? I don't have another tank set up and I don't want to change his environment and loose him. help? wierd little molly
Question. We have a small tank that currently houses 2 mollies, one black and one yellow, and a cherry barb. Recently, the yellow molly has been acting really odd. It used to swim around and hang out with the other guys, but then I actually thought it was dead one day, it was just laying in the rocks on the bottom on its side looking like, well, what dead fish look like. I don't like scooping out dead creatures, so I left to get my husband or son. We came back an hour or so later and it was back up swimming and seeming fine. Now though, it is constantly swimming down and hiding in this same place in the corner of the tank near a big rock and some decorative foilage. Occasionaly it comes up to eat, but then heads right back for the hide-out. Any ideas why this fish has started acting this way? Could it be protecting egss or something? PLease excuse my unawares, but I actually have very little knowledge about fish behavior or procreation. thanks. | | Saturday, September 26th, 2009 | 7:32 pm [fishmonger138]

Question re: tank care
I'm still pretty new at the aquarium thing, so kindly don't lambaste me for my ignorance. I received a 20 gallon aquarium last Christmas as a (very unexpected) gift. It had the standard set up: heater, hood, plastic plants, filter, rocks. When I received it, I did a lot of reading about maintaining the correct ph and such, allowed it to sit for a couple of weeks before adding fish, etc. While I have no problems with nitrite, I seem to have a continual issue with nitrate. I do a 20% water change weekly, and make sure to vacuum out all the food/waste bits from the gravel. It seems like there it still quite a bit of nitrate, though - I test it regularly and despite water changes and occasional dosing with supposed water treatments (for aquariums) that are supposed to eliminate some of the nitrate, I still have issues with it. Is there anything I can do about this? The tank is not overcrowded - two black mollies, three tetras, an algae eater and a small catfish-type fish reside there - I don't overfeed, and I've cleaned the filter, the gravel, everything - about every two months, beyond the normal filter changes and vacuumings. I'm up for almost any solution, because eventually I would like to add more fish, but I don't want to kill them with improperly balanced water. An employee of the local petstore said I should look into live plants, but I have no idea if it would be a good thing/bad thing - I don't know much about them, in honesty. There was also the suggestion to add algae to the tank (which I also did not do). TIA for any suggestions... Current Mood: frustrated | | Sunday, August 2nd, 2009 | 11:38 pm [nimir_ra]

Eclipse 12 lighting
My one set up right now (soon after a move) is my fresh water eclipse 12. I love this set up. However, the button to turn the light on has busted. Id guess theres a spring that sprung, or something. For now, I have a clip light on the tank to provide light for the plants, and they seem to be fine with this. Any ideas how I can fix this without spending $50 on a new hood? Thanks all. | | Sunday, June 7th, 2009 | 10:15 pm [littlegraytiger]

Housing Three Spot Gouramis and TankMates
Hi everyone. I have two seperate 20 gallon high tanks right now that each house a single juvenile three spot gourami, with three oto catfish in each aquarium. I have a couple of questions... Are these gourami supposed to be highly aggressive? One is the blue phase and the other is a gold phase though I believe they're both male. Blue is my original and he's one of the most aggressive fish I've owned, killing two fellow female juveniles on two seperate occasions. Blue was also housed with four silver mollies, but when his aggression turned towards them they were relocated. Thankfully neither fish seems to care about otos and they have also been housed with khuli loaches and corydoras catfish without any incident. What sort of non-gourami tankmates in the adult-sized tank(35-75) can I expect to be successful with? Will they live well with females of their own kind? Will the males get along in a large aquarium(My 75) or is it a saner bet to give them seperate tanks? And lastly...if I can get them to a healthy adult size, will most fish stores allow me to trade one in for proper tankmates if I want one tank and peace in it? Aquarium numbers and size shouldn't be an issue for me, upgrades will be imminent when their size warrants it. | | Friday, May 22nd, 2009 | 8:06 pm [gallius]

Air pumps
In my several decades of aquariums I've not focused very much on air pumps. My usual method is when one fails, drive to Walmart and buy another one. I've never had much trouble with this. Until now. Here lately it seems like I'm going through a cheap air pump every couple of months. Yet another one failed yesterday. And when my main tank uses two by itself, that's a pain in the butt...and over the long term, in the wallet. So enough of the cheapies. I'm looking higher end. Especially since I'm getting ready to (finally) set up a 125g tank. When I ask local people "what's the best air pump?" I keep hearing the same name over and over...Coralife Luft series. I'd like to hear what anyone here has to say on the subject. | | Sunday, April 26th, 2009 | 3:32 pm [mobiustrip_]

Taking suggestions for another specie for my tank
So I have a happy little 10 gallon glass aquarium that is currently home to three big buff neon tetras, 2 cute little Corydoras paleatus and a happy fat gold mystery snail. I want to add maybe one more specie to liven things up a bit. I was thinking maybe a trio of another type of tetra, or perhaps a couple dwarf frogs. Any comments/suggestions? Thanks! | 1:29 am [geckopaws]

I wonder why my fish are so active now
Lately my fish have been very active swimming around the tank. They seem to be swimming faster. Could it be the change of weather or something like that? Has anyone else noticed that their fish are more active? | | Thursday, April 16th, 2009 | 6:20 pm [hervoicewasgray]

Attention US Members: Say No To HR669
Greetings to Everyone, I’m writing to inform all U.S. citizens/members of a bill that is quickly ascending upon us, that requires action, now. On April 23rd 2009 The Natural Resources Committee of the U.S. Congress will hold a hearing on H.R. 669 “The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act”, a resolution that will in effect ban importation, interstate transport and the private ownership of most birds, mammals, reptiles, and fish as pets. Should HR669 be adopted as written only the following non-native animals would be allowed: -Cats (Felis catus) -Cattle/Oxen (Bos taurus) -Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) -Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) -Donkey/Asses (Equus asinus) -Domesticated Geese (family Anatidae) -Domesticated Ducks (Anas spp.) -Goats (Capra aegagrus hircus) -Common Goldfish (Carassius auratus auratus) -Horses (Equus caballus) -Llama (Lama glama) -Mule/Hinny (Equus caballus x E. asinus) -Domesticated Pigs/Hogs (Sus scrofa domestica) -Domesticated Rabbit vatieties (Oryctolagus cuniculus) -Sheep (Ovis aries) +any other species that is determined by the Secretary to be common and clearly domesticated. Before you panic, you should understand that there is a grandfather clause. Animals owned prior to this bill being put into effect will not be interfered with. There’s many holes in this bill, including giving the government leeway to breed and introduce nonnative species into the population, not covering how they’ll determine if an animal was owned prior to the bill going into effect, and no regard for the economical effects. They know all the risks to be assessed, but aren’t assessing any of them before trying to create such a bill! Please contact your local Congress Representative to voice your opposition. Please, give a mature, well-studied and thought-out reply to this bill. If you have no issue with a less restricting bill, then feel free to say so. Bu this bill as it’s written cannot be passed, and shouldn’t be attempted until assessments are made, and everyone has a better understanding and full grasp of the situation. Well I just put a 2-5 gallon submersible heater
I have a 4 gallon globe tank called a biorb. Its nice and right now I kept danios in it without any heat and they haven't gotten any diseases yet. Now I just found at the store a 2-5 gallon submersible heater. I want to put a dwarf gourami in it because those don't get past 2 inches. So I have to wait to heat up the water. | | Monday, March 30th, 2009 | 3:38 pm [davmoo]

Atlantic Stingrays
One of the shops I frequent has a (freshwater) Atlantic Stingray for sale. I am *so* tempted. The only thing that stops me is that while I have 35 years of freshwater tank experience, this would be my first experience with a ray. Anybody here got any experience with them? If so, comments or opinions? Thanks! (Normally I'm not big on cross-posting. But in this instance I'm trying to hit as wide an audience as possible, so its also being posted in 1fish_2fish.) | | Thursday, March 12th, 2009 | 9:27 am [wander_lost]

disappearing fish? we have a 10 gallon tank in which we have (had) 2 small cherry barbs, an oto, and 2 little I can't remember what they are but they are sort of clear see through guys with black eyes. A few weeks ago our oto mysteriously disappeared. Gone. I looked everywhere, including the floor for him. Our filter can't suck up fish because it is capped on the end, but I took it all apart and looked in there, under all the decor, everywehre. The dude was gone. My son and I thought maybe by some strange thing we sucked him up while cleaning the tank - this seemed like a long shot as I had no idea how we would have missed him, but there seemed to be no other explanation. This morning, one of the see through guys is gone. I mean G O N E. I looked on the floor, everywhere (I don't know how the fish would have gotten out of the tank anyway, but I still looked all around it). WTF? Are the barbs eating these guys? Doesn't seem likely, but where on earth can they be going? Has anyone ever had disappearing fish? Ideas? I just don't see how a fish can be there one day and completely gone the next without a trace. | | Monday, February 23rd, 2009 | 11:55 pm [geckopaws]

Wondering about zebra danios
Hi aquarium loving freaks, I was wondering what kinds of diseases I need to be on the look out with zebra danios and if they are tropical but a low temperature fish. Because the guys at petco told me that they could stay healthy in room temperature water. I don't know about this and I kind of think I need more advice on whether to get a biorb heater or not. I know they are like 50w heaters and I don't know if they would over heat in a four gallon aquarium. Unless I keep it on the lowest setting. So please I am in need of advice. |
