HAY guys I got this commission from my church in Harrisonburg and it eats all my sketching energy/time. I don't feel I should post final images of the sketches until they're ready, but here are some of the sketches that didn't quite work, lol.

It's a tile design for the new tile pattern to go down the center aisle of the church.

18th-Jun-2008 10:48 pm - the making of the caking
badass, toph
I should profess my love of cooking, and how recently, I've felt more compelled than ever to do a bunch of baking and cooking.

Baking tends to take precedence, as my workweek is too busy to really put more than basic effort into making dinner (unless it's quesadilla night, in which case I go batshit and make delicious delicious quesadillas at the expense of my time. this generally happens on a Friday night for obvious reasons). Cooking is art+science, and I enjoy feeling like a mad scientist as I put a few drops of vanilla here and a pinch of salt there.

Anyway, cooking is inspiring. Here, have someone making a cake. Oh, and look, I'm still practicing putting backgrounds in my pieces. I know she has beefy arm syndrome©, but that's 'coz she's...that's a heavy bowl, you guys.

TL;DR SORRY
2nd-May-2008 11:05 pm - fandom #5: anime Mary
fish
I guess this doesn't really qualify as a fandom, but more like something that ended up cropping up whenever I ended up drawing my various fandoms. Drawings of myself in anime/manga style definitely represent a large chunk of my drawing past, so for today, here is idealized Anime Mary, complete with telekineses (for tea parties) and a sword (for righteous avenging)!

1st-May-2008 10:45 pm - Fandom #4: Chibi/Superdeformed
Lina
This one is a little harder to explain, and isn't a fandom in the sense that it was one series or character I obsessed over, but more of a style. As I started becoming more familiar with anime and manga I noticed that characters would repeatedly became small, squat versions of themselves and perform cute little reactions (like in my icon!) at opportune moments. You guys know what I mean. I don't know what the real name for this is, but I used to call them chibi or superdeformed and they're adorable. For my drawing I decided to combine today's fandom with another almost-fandom - ff7. I didn't start the playing game until college (and to date I've never finished it), but my best friend back in 7th grade played it constantly and I totally hopped on the Cloud-worshipping bandwagon.

hey, it has to get heavy once in a while
30th-Apr-2008 11:51 pm - Fandom #3: Bishounen
tree of life
oh, bishounen... such a special and wonderful niche in the world of anime and manga. I think CLAMP are my favorite for the way they draw bishounen - they do a great job with making the eyes deep and lovely and doing hawt male figures. This image is of kamui from x/1999. Other favorites of mine over the years included Cloud, Tamahome from Fushigi Yugi, Zelgadis from Slayers, and of course Touga once I discovered Utena.

29th-Apr-2008 10:45 pm - fandom #2 . . .
dilly-dally
My obsession with Sailor Moon alienated me from most of my junior high school classmates but enabled me to connect with the few who weren't too cool for anime. My best friend in early junior high introduced me to about 50 billion other animes (and video games, too), one of which was Rurouni Kenshin. She had fansubs of the whole series before it was released commercially as Samurai X (dumb name barf). In our world of fandom she always claimed the hottest guys, but that didn't stop me from drawing them too!

so are you guys using references for these? because, uh, I am . . . it's been waaay too long since I could draw these from memory.

Emma, Gayla, Katie and I made a cake for Anthony's birthday. Emma, Gayla, and Katie all work in Anthony's glassblowing studio. The cake is made to look like a giant glass sculpture )that Anthony made.

KKO and I engaged in 12HourComics (our own pansy version of 24HourComics) last Thursday when we were hanging out in her family's house. We both managed to finish twelve pages in twelve hours, but we decided not to count the hour when we were required to cook dinner. Dialogue is typed out below:

Panel 3. Blaise: Oh, Tetro, you're early! I'm still making the cake!
Panel 4. Tetro: Is Lenore here? It looks like we're in for a storm and I know she'll be wearing that goofy metal and leather outfit.
Panel 5: Blaise: Come in, Come in! You know where the kitche(n) is.
Tetro: Do you hear...something?

I was thinking of the floating hair of the fairies in my favorite picture book, St. George and the Dragon, for Tetro's hair.
