Seriously.

In NEVER fails.

There is a reason I don't get my hair cut. Every time I do, no matter what picture I point to in the book or how many simple words I use, I get the Carol Brady cut.

My mom would say that I should say I don't like it and demand they do what I want, but I'm not that kind of person.

Honestly, I'm just happy it's lighter and less-messy. And, let's face it: these people are professionals and I know my head is weird. Maybe they know something I don't and that's why I get the cut I get. Really, they are just trying to make me look better. which would be better done with a paper bag!

But... Carol Brady?

scary self-pictures hiding back here )

In the grand scheme of things, it's not that big a deal, I know. But JUST ONCE I'd like to have someone look at the Season Two-Sam Carter photo I always have with me -just in case I find myself at a haircut-needing stage- and go: "I can do that!"

And do that.

[info]ladyyueh gave me F

1. Father. (The Happiest Millionaire) Okay, his name is Anthony J Drexel Biddle -yeah, that Biddle and that Drexel- but, for whatever reason, he's listed in the credits as 'Father'. Anyway... he's a millionaire from Philadelphia and runs a Bible class in the stable. It's really a boxing club, but Bible class sounds better. He also has a collection of alligators he caught down in the Everglades and while he thinks he has control over his life, he really has no control over the most important part: his daughter, Cordy. He keeps trying to join the Marines, but they won't take him because he's just an old man with a hobby. His butler, John Lawless, is his 'sidekick' and helps keep Angie -Cordy's fiancee- from skipping town after a fight. Fred MacMurray is awesome, btw!

2. Frank Powell. (Medical Investigation) Frank Powell is an ex-cop who works for the Natioanl Institutes of Health. He's married to Kim and they have three girls, the youngest being Tesha. Frank is a big ol' teddy bear and pretty much defers to Stephen Connor and Stephen Connor alone. One would think Frank has worked with Stephen enough to know that he should always be ready to go anywhere; when in doubt, he'll have to settle for a t-shirt with a seal on it :) He also doesn't get paid enough for this crap.

3. Flash Gordon. (Flash Gordon) Flash! Ah-ahh Savior of the universe! Flash is a football player who finds himself on the planet Mongo, which is ruled by Ming. Ming's daughter has the hots for Flash -when she's not trysting with 007, that is- and when Ming kills Flash to prove he's the better man, she brings him back to life and takes Flash to see 007. Ming wants to marry Dale, and Flash has to get back to save her. And there's a rock with a demon bug that'll bite your hand off if you get the wrong hole. Long live Flash!

4. Francis Poncherello. (CHiPs) Ponch!! One of the original members of the Captain Tightpants club! Ponch is a motorcycle cop with the California Highway Patrol. His partner and best friend is Jon Baker and they seem to be the only two cops on duty in LA. Ever.

5. Fiyero. (Wicked) In this case, we're going with Broadway!Wicked. Fiyero is a Winkie prince from the western part of Oz. He has a tendency to get himself kicked out of schools across Oz and ends up at Shiz University. He accepts the role of Galinda's boyfriend while avoiding his attraction to Elphaba. After Elphie becomes an enemy of the state, Fiyero helps her escape and becomes a criminal himself. He's captured and strung up in a cornfield as punishment, but Elphie performs a spell, hoping to spare him from the pain. In a cruel twister of fate, she turns him into a scarecrow. Yeah, THAT Scarecrow. Everyone blames Elphie for the Lion being a coward, but it was Fiyero who let him out of the cage. *squishes Fiyero* And Norbert. *and Leo, by default* *and Aybol* *thinks of Taye* *and now Joey Mac* New Kids have a new CD. Must get that... o.O Uh.. so Fiyero...

I have this weird urge to buy a doll.

No, not any doll in particular. Just something pretty with a foofy dress. Probably porcelain.

Which is silly because I used to collect porcelain dolls and in fact have a whole box of them in storage at home. >_> I had a fondness for the Victorian era as a child for some reason, so I have a small collection of these little girls in ruffly dresses.

I also have a big Victorian dollhouse which was built by my mom and painted to look exactly like the house on the cover of my copy of The Dollhouse Murders. (Not that cover.) It is populated by a family of tiny Victorian porcelain dolls of the correct ages and genders to match the dolls in the book as well.

The funny thing about that is that it wasn't done on purpose. I bought and read the book a year or two after I got the dollhouse.

(Off the subject, I loved Betty Ren Wright as a kid. I have The Dollhouse Murders and Christina's Ghost both still and they're both signed copies.)

I think I had my heart broken by a doll a couple years ago. I hadn't gotten a doll in years, then Mom and were Christmas shopping one day 3 or 4 years ago and I spotted this doll that was just gorgeous. I wanted her. Mom loves to get nostalgic, so she bought me the doll for Christmas. Her name was Charlotte.

A couple months later, the doll was on her stand on top of my chest of drawers and when I went to get clothes out she fell onto the floor and her face shattered. I was so upset. Sometimes I get these illogical emotional attachments to certain inanimate objects and then they get taken or broken and I get ridiculously upset in a way that I've never gotten over people or pets dying.

When I was about 12 I cried once because a stranger in a restaurant made me a balloon animal and a couple hours later it popped suddenly. I'd never had a balloon animal before, and it was a pony, and then it was gone. Even at the time I knew it was stupid for me to care, but I was still sad.

The early word from Santa Anita is positive: HoF jockey Gary Stevens took a tour over the new Pro-Ride surface earlier in the week and has since given it a ringing endorsement.

"If this track is maintained properly and it remains as it is today, I can truthfully say it’s the best track I’ve ridden on,” said Stevens, who has been riding regularly in the mornings at Del Mar in preparation for a legends race during the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita Park. [Thoroughbred Times]

Of course, they initially said something quite similar about the spanking new Cushion Track last September, so we'll see if it holds up.

-----

Something about Jess Jackson's attitude following Curlin's win in the Woodward last Saturday has lead me to believe that the man doth protest too much. With today's announcement that the 2007 HoY will be headed to Belmont for a repeat in the Gold Cup, I feel my suspicion that we may yet see him in the Classic is closing in on valid.

"We are steering Curlin towards all the renowned competitions and certainly the Jockey Club Gold Cup is one of America's most prestigious races. In the past, many of America's top Thoroughbreds sealed their honors by competing in this race. Also, this contest is in New York State where Curlin has seen much success and received an outpouring of support. Both factors weighed heavily in favor of our decision to compete again at Belmont." [BRISnet]

The Woodward victory takes Curlin's lifetime record to 10-2-2 in 14, and catapulted him past Skip Away into 2nd place among the highest money-winning American runners in history. His bankroll (currently $9,796,800) is $203,015 away from 1st-ranked Cigar.

The GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, scheduled to run for it's 90th year on 27 September, offers a purse of $750k.

-----

Some happy news from the Bluegrass today as Michael Blowen's Old Friends Equine announced that California Iron-horse Lava Man will be joining their farm's roster beginning 16 September.

[Part-Owner Steve] Kenly said, “Michael called us about retiring Lava Man, and he was just so energetic and excited. I didn’t think there was that much interest in the horse outside of the West Coast, and Michael just said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ We’re not blue-blood, we’re not the uber-wealthy. Lava Man is a small guy’s horse and Michael is a small-guy’s farm, so we thought it was a perfect fit.” [Blood-Horse]

This story warmed me to the core, and I'm not ashamed to tell anyone that I shed a happy tear. I know there was talk/hope that he might stay with O'Neill as a stable pony (ala Funny Cide); but something about his last few races smacked of a bit track sour to me, and I'm happy he's going someplace with a strong reputation of doing right by the sport's elders.

-----

And there's reform, reform everywhere!

First, several states (including Kentucky and Louisiana) and the Breeders' Cup adopt strict new anti-steroid laws; while several other states (including [I believe] Texas, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia) have their own overhauls in the works. Once again, the tragedy of Eight Belles serves its silver-lining purpose.

Now, the four major US sales companies: Barretts, Fasig-Tipton, Keeneland, and the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.: have come to agree that the under-tack shows for their respective Two-year-olds In Training sales will henceforth be conducted under strict whip regulations.

“The focus on safety and soundness issues within our industry brought us together, and we forged a united front to introduce important changes in the way under tack shows are conducted,” [OBS Chairman Mike] O’Farrell said. “The changes we have enacted can only enhance for buyers the reputation and image of the 2-year-olds in training sales program.” [Blood-Horse]

Likewise, the United States Trotting Association [USTA] has tightened up on their own whip-usage. From their website: "[drivers will] never be allowed to put the reins in one hand in order to strike a horse with a whip at any time during the race ... Penalties start at $100 for the first offense, but there is also an additional ruling that allows for anyone found to be whipping a horse excessively at any time to be fined up to an additional $1,000 and be suspended from competing and/or ejected from the property."

Here's hoping that these new adjustments continue toward improving the sport.

[info]gatechic gave me G

1. Gibbs. (NCIS) Leroy Jethro Gibbs. He is Gibbs. *searches for words* Dude, he's GIBBS. I mean: Chuck Norris checks his closet at night for Gibbs. Gibbs holds meetings in an elevator, keeps Abby swimming in Caf-Pow and listens to three songs. He TOTALLY had the hots for Kate, had a moment of STUPID with Hollis Mann which didn't help the fact that she was Kate, but that's a different show, and I don't really care what happened between him and Jenny. No one can give a Gibbs-slap like Gibbs. I love Gibbs.

2. Guy Fleegman. (Galaxy Quest) Crewman number Six... the expendable one. Y'know: the one who dies to prove the situation is dangerous. He can also be confused for the pluky comic relief. ;) He's just jazzed to be on the show. And he thinks that Fred might be high. He also doesn't recommend the blue spaghetti. *thumbs up*

3. George Hammond. (Stargate SG-1) Hammond of Texas... he's a teddy bear. And has more patience than any man EVER. Seriously. He'd have to, to put up with Jack O'Neill. o.O George is another man not to piss off, for he has Thor, Selmak and Bra'tac in his corner.

4. Glitch. (Tin Man) Please... like you didn't know there'd be a mention. I can't get through the day without at least ONE Tin Man reference. *eyeroll* But I digress... Glitch is better as Glitch; Ambrose is a pill. I don't know this for sure, but I assume Ambrose was a stuffy ol' advisor. Glitch is fun. And has rhythm. He can probably sing, too. ;)

5. Gabey. (On the Town) Gabey is a sailor in the US Navy. He has 24 hours in New York and sees a picture of Miss Turnstiles in the subway. He proceeds to drag his two best friends all over the city, trying to find her. Not only is she from the same town as him, but they both had Miss Hodgins for American History. To ease your mind, he finds her. Then loses her. Then finds her again. Just in time to get arrested and sent back to the ship. It's true love, man! :D

EDIT:
[info]trystan830 gave me R

1. Robin Scherbatsky. (How I Met Your Mother) Also known as Robin Sparkles, she's a news anchor in New York City. She's from Canada, plays with guns, smokes fine cigars and is the object of Barney Stinson's affections in a WICKED way. Oh, and she wants to go to the mall. Today.

2. Rupert Giles. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Also goes by Ripper. He's a high school librarian who moonlights as a Watcher. He's also a father-figure to a bunch of Scoobies and made out with Buffy's mom. He's a bad-ass when pushed, so it's best not to push. He's also kinda hot. Y'know, for a librarian... He can sing, too.

3. Ray Stantz. (Ghostbusers) He is into ghosts. And busting ghosts. Works with his best friends, busting ghosts. But not the good ones; the bad ones. He's even saved New York City. Twice. He also used to roast marshmallows at Camp Wanaconda. And, apparently, he's not a God. *shrugs*

4. Ronald Quincy (Armageddon) He is the smartest man on the planet. He went to MIT with the President's Chief Scientific Advisor - who got a C; he works for NASA and is married. He also owns a brown suit that doesn't actually fit. He likes to carry around stacks of papers and run numbers and makes a good analogy. One with firecracks and ketchup. And he's HOT.

5. Riker (Star Trek: The Next Generation) Will Riker... *squishes Will* He'd second-in-command of the Enterprise, under Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He's got an on-again/off-again relationship with Deanna Troi and they totally got married. FINALLY! He has a beard and, while he looks okay clean-shaven, it's just not right. Even Data would agree. Riker actually rode on Zephram Cochrane's warp ship - the one that the Vulcans detected, prompting first contact. He can play the trombone, too. I used to have a Riker t-shirt, but I gave it to my brother-from-another-mother (aka the brother's best friend). My BFAM took up trombone because of Will Riker. True story.

[mood | okay]

I love the fact that I'm surrounded by good friends capable of keeping me on a level keel. When I was on the verge of a total meltdown over the whole roommate brujaja, Ron reminded me that while my situation was far from ideal, it had given me a year; which was much better than nothing.

Last week I met up for coffee and conversation with a couple of girls looking for a roommate to share a 4br/2ba house on the east side. They needed someone ASAP to help make September's rent (their previous roomie had been called to duty by the Air Force and shipped out), and I wasn't about to break my back trying to stay in the other apartment if I could help it. They were asking $400/mo + util. (about $30); making it only a little less than I was already paying, but with the added bonus of living with girls closer to my age instead of a 50-year-old gay ex-CIA Mormon. Plus, it has a pool.

So last Saturday Paul and I moved my stuff a whole three blocks. All told it took about three hours from tear-down to set-up. Years as a gypsy mean I travel light. ^-^

No internet at the house yet means I'm at the mercy of Pima County Library until I get a job that will afford me the added expense. It feels like I've been papering the city with my resumé, but up to now it's been a slew of "thank you for your interest, however [the position has been filled/at this time you do not qualify/we're experiencing financial crisis and cannot afford to hire new staff]" etc.etc. jesus christ

I've got my resume in with at least five different staffing agencies now, and am becoming even more familiar with the freshly plumbed seventh level of hell absolute joy that is the public transportation system known as SunTran. As a result, I'm falling more in love with my bike now that a] I've finally acclamated to the altitude that I'm not fixin' to boot from shortness of breath every quarter mile, and b] the weather is beginning to cool off enough to make riding it after 10aM tollerable.

Speaking of: Yesterday I rode from my new place to the bus stop on B'way, took the bus from there to Wilmot, then rode my bike again clear down to Dodge (about 4mi.)-- a route all full of serious hills and stop lights that would have killed me dead a few months ago but I was all "huh, I've been riding a while where the-- fuck me! El Con!" about it. Watch as I preen over my newer, fitter self. ^-^

The down to this newfound glory? My iPod died. //sadface//

That's all for now. Got to go find a book to read now that I've lost my primary crazy deterrent. I'm thinking a nice paperback, something that'll fit in my purse. Any suggestions?

But, honestly:

Radcliffe Refuses To Name First Sex Partner

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is refusing to name the woman he lost his virginity to at 16 - because she was much older than him.

The young actor makes the big reveal about his first time in a new Details magazine interview - but he's not revealing who his first love was.

Now 19, Radcliffe insists the age difference "wasn't ridiculous," but "it would freak some people out."

RNC speeches [Sep. 3rd, 2008|09:50 pm]

zia_narratora
[Tags|, ]

So, I didn't get Mitt Romney's speech at all. Especially when he says things like "We need Big Ideas, not Big Brother."

Which I know what he meant by it, but when the Bush administration has been accused of spying on people and killing our rights as much as they have, it doesn't get across the message I think he was intending to make.

Another thing that weirded me out about Romney's speech-- he talks about how the Democratic party wants to take our rights away and then two minutes later is talking about keeping pornography out of homes. I generally think that on that count, the Republican party is much more interested in stepping in and regulating freedoms than the Democratic party is-- the only one that the Democratic party really cares about is gun control. And I realize that that is really super important to a lot of people, but no one is trying to take away hunting rifles.

Huckabee, on the other hand, man. I wish he didn't have so many crazy Fundamentalist leanings, because man, he's brilliant. And he's such a great speaker. I didn't agree with everything in his speech, but when he's not talking about his religion, he's fabulous to listen to and so smart.

Rudy is being Rudy-- I think he's too vitriolic to be going right before Sarah Palin...they should have had him go early to warm up the crowd, I think. I love Rudy and I kind of wanted him to get the nomination, and then have Bloomberg run independently...just because the Black, Jew, and Italian running for President jokes would have been awesome.

Except for this Islamic terrorism thing? Umm, who are they insulting? How about Muslims? And we're not mentioning September 11th because that was seven years ago and we need to move on. Jesus, Rudy, I know it was your time in the sun, but please get the hell over it.

Okay, now he just got nasty. Rudy, stop making New Yorkers look bad. This is exactly what the rest of the country already thinks we're like. I want to listen to Huckabee again.

Okay, Sarah Palin. I think this will be interesting because it's really our first time hearing her, even if the speech was written before she was selected.

I remember when Bill Clinton first started running for President and I kept wanting to slap his hand down. It would drive me nuts watching him because he kept making hand motions while speaking. Sarah Palin needs to learn not to roll her lips while she's on national TV; that surprises me because of her TV experience.

This speech so far seems perfectly decent but kind of bland?

Ooh, actually, she has a nephew on a carrier in the Gulf-- one of my cousins is doing that now; I want to find out which one he's on.

Also her youngest daughter is adorable.

This whole speech is a little weird, because it feels more like a biography/introduction than a real speech? I know this is the first time many people have heard her, but I feel like I would rather they'd gotten Rudy to coach her. She's not even delivering her vitriolic lines with vitriol, which makes her just sound like a lecturey professor.

And she really, really doesn't want to attack the media in her first major speech on the national scale? Is this to throw people off when the media criticizes her so she can be all "well, the media's criticizing me because I won't pander to them?" Because I am honestly starting to believe this is a strategic thing.

Okay, eBay joke? Funny. Actually, that whole section was funny and as a big fan of Mike Bloomberg, I appreciate people in positions of privilege who refuse luxuries they don't need.

Why is she still misrepresenting her fiscal history, though? She shouldn't be talking about that when she's been called out on it as many times as she has.

The energy talk is a good move, though. This is obviously where her expertise is, although I'm not sure I feel comfortable with it coming from someone who is known for earmarks to her own town-- is she just going to be giving more money back to her home state at the expense of other states? She went from highlighting everything well to turning this back into Alaskan interests.

I like all the talk about things being produced by American workers when she wants to pay Canada for that.

Okay, and she just likened Obama to...Moses? And it's weird that she's not using his name.

I haven't had any more comments since then because I think I'm going back to my earlier statement that it's not a BAD speech, but it's not a super impressive one and I feel that it's kind of canned. She's repeating things that previous speakers already said or things we've heard from McCain himself before and I'm a little disappointed because I was hoping we'd get more of a sense of her own individual identity from this.

I think if I were rating that speech like a movie? I would rate it about a 2, maybe 2 1/2 stars-- not offensively bad, but nothing new and kind of bland. The half is because it's her first one. In relation, I think I'd give Romney and Giuliani both 1 1/2-- Romney was just really off, and Giuliani is a good speaker but it was not a likable speech and poorly positioned. Huckabee wins with definitely a 4-star speech and the best of the night.
