How would I go about jailbreaking my iphone? |

It's relatively simple if you have a Mac.
If you are a Windows user and not used to the processes of jailbreaking, I wouldn't suggest trying it until an easier method is available.

maybe I'm crazy, but I'm betting that if you're well off enough to buy an iPhone and pay the service fees, you can probably scrape enough together to get a decent computer too. ;-)
the minis are less than the original iphones were.
yeah, but you need to buy all the peripherals, which add up
Buy a generic $15 KB and generic $10 mouse, and a cheap 17" LCD. :)
yea, unfortunately i have Windows.
I'd wait then. It really does currently take like 3-4 different programs and some advanced working to get the jailbreak to happen if you are on Windows right now.
I have access to somebody else's Mac at the office; can I use that just for jailbreaking, and then still use the iPhone with my home PC?

Yep. Use the Mac at the office to do everything up until the point it says "go to itunes and restore" just copy the ipsw file that the pwnage tool creates and restore it from your own computer and itunes and it'll do it all just fine.
There are some sites out there *cough*piratebay*cough* that have a jailbroken restore 2.0 firmware that you can use.
But you still have to "pwn" the phone before you can install that firmware.
Maybe I misunderstood what was going on when I jailbroke mine, but I'm not sure that's entirely true. If memory serves, it created the firmware, I put the phone into DFU mode then used iTunes to actually install the firmware (ah, option-click, how I love thee.)
Like I said, I might be mistaken and that Pwnage Tool did, in fact, do more than just create the firmware. It was about three in the morning when I ran it.
From the description and user stories I read I got the impression that this was the case. The Pwnage tool only creates the broken firmware and you use iTunes to do a restore of the phone, followed by a resync. | |
