[the_laird]
I have "upgraded" to the 3G from the original iPhone.
I have 3G and wifi turned off.
I used GPS for about 30 seconds earlier this morning.
I have exchange email set to "push", the rest is set to fetch and manual (same as the settings on my old phone)

I unplugged it from the charger at 8am. it is now 11am and my battery is down to 20%.

Any ideas?

Have you made/received a lot of calls today? That'll always do it for my iPhone.

Not a single call and just a couple of emails.

I am getting the impression it is either:

1. a game that doesn't stop running in the background
2. MobileMe, even when on fetch.

My vote is for the push email. That seems to be the biggest hit on my original iPhone.

the push email also kills the battery.

How often does it push? It will definitely impact battery life. Also I don't have any solid metrics but I know I was reading that the battery life on the 3G isn't as good as the original but I have nothing solid to quote as of right now and still have the original Iphone myself.

I set mine to manual as it's my biggest energy-gobbler :)

having it on "push" is definitely draining some of your battery. check to see how often you have it set for. on top of that, like the person above said, the 3G's battery life isn't as good as the original iPhone.

as everyone else has said, it's most definitely because of the push. i had similar issues on my 1st gen iPhone and once i turned push off my battery life was back to normal.
