| | Cow-orkers speaking, and shuffling papers | ] | Could somebody give an assist please? My iPhone was at 1.1.2, jailbroken, and in my copious reading I was given the ostensibly helpful hint to restore using the 2.0 .ipsw file. I got locked into a cycle of it going into recovery mode, being unable to restore, and then having to start all over again. Finally I decided to try loading it with 1.1.4. This worked, I was able to restore all my content, and it worked fine.
So, last night, in a fit of stupidity, I tried to update it to 2.0 from 1.1.4., just before I went to bed. No such luck! Same issue, so I got it back down to 1.1.4 again and have a working phone (though the restore of my media content seems to go really slowly, and craps out a lot).
The .ipsw file I was trying to use for 2.0 was one I downloaded fairly soon after it was released; could that be part of the problem? I've uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it from the latest download directly from Apple's site, but that didn't help me any.
I tried to make a Genius Bar appointment at the Apple Store 1/2 mile from where I live, but they're all booked up; so I made one for Sunday afternoon at one 10 miles from home. So if I can solve this before then, I don't have to waste the gas money!
My iPhone is tied to a PC running Windows XP Home. Suggestions? |

I bought my iPhone unlocked for T-Mobile (and jailbroken) on eBay last year. So far, so good. Nothing has gone wrong, etc. Anyway! My dad bought "Hot Spot for the Home" from T-Mobile, which allows us to make free calls/texts over the WiFi network. Unfortunately, it doesn't work with 1.1.1., which is what I currently have because I don't know how to upgrade without bricking. My dad read that 2.0 allows you to use the HotSpot at home, so he would like me to upgrade. (Can anyone confirm this?)
Question is, how do I do this? I had it done for me by the eBay seller, so I am clueless. I don't want to restore my phone and then go to 2.0, because I'll lose everything (right?). So is there an installer app that does it for you, or what should I do? Can anyone give me a step by step for dummies on how to go from 1.1.1. to 2.0 without losing the ability to have T-Mobile/without losing contacts/info from the phone?
Thanks so muchh! |

Are the lines to get a new iPhone still insane and hours long and out the door like they were the first few days? I really want to get one, but I don't have the time or the patience to wait hours to but a cell phone if I even find one. |

i have a 1st generation iphone. i did the update to 2.0 the morning it came out, (stupidly, i did not get the memo that the servers went down) so i had my phone frozen to the screen telling me to plug into itunes all day until it finally got fixed at night.
since then, my phone has been driving me crazy. 1. its sloooooow. slow as heck. my keypad keeps lagging and ill type a whole sentence, look up to see if its done and it will then quickly write the whole sentence after i typed, does that make sense?
2. also, sometimes ill click on a name in my texts to see what the message is and the keyboard will move up the to the top of screen and the bottom half will be white. what the heck?
3. when i try to open an app (sim, tetris, facebook etc) it will open the app then go to the home screen. it will do this a couple times before it finally works.
4. my internet hardly works anywhere anymore even if i have full service, wifi, the whole deal. it keeps telling me the server cannt be reached.
5. FINALLY, when i click to check my email and i hit "update" it takes ethier a good 10 minutes to get one email or it just doesnt do anything.
im really frustrated, my phone hasnt been dropped or anything. |

| Help! Screen weirdness. |

Help!
First generation iPhone, I was on a phone call that got dropped, when they called back, my screen froze and then went dark. It stayed that way, although the phone kept ringing. I couldn't get the touch screen to respone with my fingers or by pressing the home key.
It FINALLY came back up a few minutes later, after I plugged it into the computer to sync it, but I still had to turn the phone off and back on to get it to "come back to life."
Has anyone had this happen to them? |

| Iphone App Question |
[Jul. 24th, 2008|02:21 pm] |
I don't exactly know if this post goes here or not, if not feel free to delete.
The other day I was installing new applications from the App store. Well I came across an application where one can access all of the information on their computer by simply using the iphone. The application was called VNC lite. I installed the application and tried running it. Well, it looks as if I might have to download it for my laptop as well. My question was, is there a safe site where I can download this from? And after downloading it how would i configure my phone with it? |

| iPod functions on the phone |
[Jul. 24th, 2008|09:57 am] |
I have the 1st generation phone and am wondering about 2 things in the iPod function:
1) Is there a way to get it to shuffle through a playlist without having to press "shuffle" every time I turn it on and hit "play"? IE, I have the shuffle function set on my iTunes and it just stays there unless I uncheck it and automatically shuffles through the songs, but I haven't found a way to do that on the phone, if there is a way.
2) Audiobook playback- the only setting I see for audiobooks is speed. Is it safe to assume that it'll pick up playback wherever I stop? This doesn't always happen with the music playlists so if I need to remember where I stopped the book, I'd like to know ahead of time.
Thanks! |

I'm wondering if anyone else has this issue. I kind of want to say it's a physical issue that I'm probably out of luck on, but since I didn't have it until I updated to 2.0, I'll give it a shot.
I have one of the first phones sold, got it the day after they came out last year. And now my phone seems to hate the idea of being on silent. I noticed it last Friday when I started to type and I heard the clicks. I wiped my finger along the side to flip the mute switch, and to my horror, it was already flipped. Orange dot and all. It seemed to correct itself after a restart, and I didn't notice it again until this morning. It will only register if I press down hard on the switch, and it will tend to stay silent if I keep my phone still, although I've seen the bell for "hey, not silent" pop up on it's own.
No idea what could have caused this. This thing is my baby and there has been no damage to my knowledge. I was really hoping to not upgrade to 3G because, I'll admit, this one is signed on the back by a band and I really don't want to stop using it. Unfortunately I sort of need this switch to work. |

| apps |
[Jul. 24th, 2008|01:00 am] |
hiya, I need some help please! I updated my software at the weekend so I could start using the apps and started by getting a few free ones. I've then bought 3 from the iTunes store and used them a few times. Last night I tried to open monkeyball and it crashed the phone and restarted it. I then tried to open monkeyball again but it says it cannot be opened, as does my other paid ones. The free ones are still all working fine.
Any ideas? |

| getting started in iPhone development |
[Jul. 21st, 2008|11:10 pm] |
So I'm a systems and network guy with a distant background in programming - I was a CompSci student... *cough*10yearsago*cough*. Never finished the degree, and programming hasn't been my primary existence in a long time. Recently I had a good idea for an iPhone app to use at work - I have the servlet all written (yay perl!), but I could use some help getting started writing the client app on the iPhone. It's simple really, take some condensed output from the servlet (retreived via HTTP) and format/display it.
Can anyone recommend some good sample code and/or starting tips? |

| iPhone came in handy! |

Today i'm walking my precious little poochy in the hood and we come along a little pomeranian wandering down the sidewalk. He moved away when we got closer so I tied up my poochy to the closest fence and approached the little guy. He was friendly enough and let me pet him and look at his collar. The dog license and rabies tag were outdated but had a number for the local dog warden on his license. I called from my new iPhone and got an address of the owners. Any cell phone would have done the job, BUT when he gave me an address, I went to the GPS and found the street. I was almost 2 blocks away and managed to find the right street. I wandered down the street w/ the little guy in my arms coz he was reluctant to follow but allowed me to carry him. So, my poochie and I went to the address given by the dog warden dude and sure enough, he lived there. The teenager who answered the door was surprised to see her little guy but took him in lovingly. Had I had my old cell phone I would have wandered around the streets w/ one dog tugging on the leash w/ another dog in my arms until I found the street or asked someone in their yard where it was, hoping they knew. I lived in that hood for 3 yrs but only knew the streets I drive on to get in and out. So, my new iPhone saved us time and got the little guy home safe and sound. |

| iPhone 3G Push? |
[Jul. 21st, 2008|06:19 pm] |
I was under the impression that iPhone 3G apps were supposed to be capable of receiving pushed data. But I'm not seeing this happening. Apps like Facebook, AIM are not getting new message notifications. I actually have to open the apps to check for new messages.
Am I misunderstanding how the push is supposed to work? Is my phone broken? (Yes, Settings > Fetch New Data > Push is set to 'On') |

| Battery issues |
[Jul. 21st, 2008|10:57 am] |
I have "upgraded" to the 3G from the original iPhone. I have 3G and wifi turned off. I used GPS for about 30 seconds earlier this morning. I have exchange email set to "push", the rest is set to fetch and manual (same as the settings on my old phone)
I unplugged it from the charger at 8am. it is now 11am and my battery is down to 20%.
Any ideas? |

| Battery Killer |
[Jul. 19th, 2008|07:50 pm] |

This might be obvious, but using the new MobileMe on iPhone will murder your battery. It used to be I could just pass out (I have a sleep disorder) and not worry about docking the iPhone, but now if I do that the iPhone will be dead or dying when I wake up. Turning off "Push" and "Fetch" in settings gets things back to the way they were. |

| Canadian Prices |
[Jul. 18th, 2008|10:55 pm] |
The Canadian iPhone plans have been heavily criticized. I gave Rogers a call to see if there was a way to improve on them.
Here's the cheapest Canadian iPhone package, available through the Rogers.com website:
150 weekday Minutes Unlimited Evenings and Weekends, starting at 9 PM 400 MB Data Total: $60
By calling them, I was able to craft the following package instead:
100 weekday minutes - $25 Unlimited Evenings and Weekends starting at 6 PM - $7 (this is when I do 99% of my calling) 6 GB data plan - $30 Total: $62
In the end, for roughly the same price, I was able to get a package that is far more compatible with my calling habits and, as a side-effect, ended up with a much higher data limit -- one that should effectively be "unlimited" for me. I can also tweak the voice package later if I need more minutes without incurring the overhead of switching to a different "default" iPhone plan.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it really seems as though you're better off customizing your plan, rather than use their default packages. (As a bonus, I was able to get them to wave the activation fee for me.) |

| | confused | ] | So I'm kind of iPhone retarded. I accept that. I can't seem to figure out how to set up an iTunes account. I want to download some app's but they never work. It says at the very bottom that I don't have an iTunes account so I'm guessing that's why nothing works. Do I need to do this online? In store? Can I do it through my phone?
Any help is greatly appreciated. =] |
