 | 03:02 pm - Carnival 2007 :) I'd like to invite y'all to the Kappa Alumni Association events at Carnival. I'd point you at our website, but it appears to be down. Please let me know if you think you'll make it to dinner, so we have a rough head-count.
Also, please let me know if you have restaurant suggestions...

 | 08:59 pm - Elections Officials Would anybody like to be an elections official for the Carnival meeting? Details here. You have to count ballots, basically, if history is any guide -- there are other duties, like certifying absentee ballots, but they didn't come up last year. You also can't get elected to office.
I'm halfway thinking that if nobody else volunteers, I'm nominating myself.
Actually, I'll probably ask a couple of other people first.
Oh, and the meeting is probably going to be from 6:30 to 7:30 on Saturday. Current Mood: tired Current Music: Veronica Mars

 | 04:59 pm - Survey of doom So we're trying to put together events for Carnival (April 19-21 -- mark your calendars now :) ).
I was curious what direction we should be going in, so I've put together a couple of questions. It'd be great if people could take a look at this and answer some or all of the questions (though your answers will be public, so keep that in mind -- feel free to email me your answers if you're self-conscious about it). Anyone can answer the poll, too, not just people who are currently members.
If everybody thinks this is a great survey (ha!), I can also send it around to those members who are not on LJ. Technically, the impetus for this was a class assignment, but it's stuff I've been curious about for awhile. I know what my answers are, for the most part, but I'd like to hear what the consensus is. And I'm always interested in hearing other people's ideas.
We might also be able to discuss some of this at Carnival if anything interesting emerges.

 | 08:04 pm - Homecoming Events We don't have a room yet, though it's been requested, but I'm figuring that we should go for the old chestnut of schedules:
Saturday, October 14 4-6 PM Reception, with snacks. It's a little longer this year so that people can split time between multiple "affinity group gatherings."
6-7 PM Meeting (send me agenda items -- note that the Program Chair won't be there, so events discussion may not be the best plan)
7:30ish PM Dinner (suggestions?)
I have no idea who's coming for Homecoming. There's no football that weekend, unless you want to commute to Cleveland. The Full Schedule, not including our events, is up.
A more comprehensive schedule (well, more detailed, with more exposition) will go out by email as soon as I can figure out where the email list is.
Oh, does Alumni House still tell people about Homecoming? I didn't get any notes this year, but my Alumni House mail may be going to my spam folder...

 | 10:52 am - Carnival Events I'm dropping y'all a line to let you know when the Alumni Association stuff will be happening at Carnival. As you've probably (hopefully) guessed, Carnival is next weekend at CMU. Here are our events:
Saturday: (4-6 PM Alumni Shift in the Carnival Booth) 5:30-6:30 PM Alumni Reception in Hamburg Hall 1002 -- right across the street from Midway, conveniently 6:30-7:30 PM Alumni Association Meeting in Hamburg Hall 1002 8 PM or thereabouts Dinner, place to be decided
There will be munchies at the reception, and hopefully active brothers will be able to come as well (they're invited; whether they show up will depend on their schedules).
At the meeting, we'll discuss future service and other events and we'll hold elections. Please comment here or let me know if there's anything else you'd like on the agenda. Or, y'know, if you'd like to run for an office, since we've got like one nomination so far. Current Mood: tired

 | 09:36 pm - Plans for This Weekend: Homecoming 2005 Saturday, October 29th 4:30-5:30 Alumni Reception Hamburg Hall 1002 (Address: 4800 Forbes Ave, Pgh, PA 15213) Munchies provided.
5:30-6:30 APOKCAA Meeting Hamburg Hall 1002 Leftover munchies from the prior event provided. Carnival service projects discussed.
7:00 Dinner as a group Somewhere off campus We don't have a set plan yet, so please send me suggestions. Or it's totally going to be all raw vegetarian seaweed curry or something, because I'll have to be the one to pick, and we all know about my taste in food. So please comment with suggestions or send them to me.
8:00 Kappa Chapter Halloween/Evil Stuff Party Porter Hall A19D (I almost remember where that is) For those of you who may be unfamiliar with Evil Stuff parties, they are the spawn of the Evil Comedy Parties of yore. Yore here, of course, meaning before my time, so I never went to one either. I do remember an evil stuff party with physhtanks dancing in lingerie and jbarr76 reciting cowboy poetry in a leopard-print velvet cowboy hat, however. I think mkincaid did bad things to food at the same party, and there were also bad math jokes of some variety. In fact, I know these things because I have pictures.
This party may be like that, or it may be totally different.
I'm not going to publish a pledge's email address on the internet, so let me know if you want to go and if you want to perform and I'll pass it along to the pledge chair, or if you get the KapAlum email which is next on my list to send out, you can tell her yourself.

 | 08:46 am - Homecoming Reception and Meeting Just a heads-up:
Homecoming is coming up the weekend of October 29-30th, and we're having an alumni reception with munchies, to which everyone is invited. We're also having a meeting, to which everyone is also invited, provided they'd like to come. The agenda for the meeting isn't set yet, but I'll post it eventually. We think this will be the correct room, but this information is subject to change and all that.

5:30-6:30 APOKCAA Meeting Hamburg Hall 1002

 | 11:58 am - Katrina and service On a more serious note, I feel like there could be things to do for the survivors of Katrina in Mississippi and New Orleans. Obviously, right now the concern is rescue, with which I doubt we as an organization could help. Later, however, there will be other challenges.
What can we do as an organization to help?
As individuals, we can donate money. I think the Red Cross are much better set up to deal with this -- there's no reason for any monetary donations to come through our organization.
As an organization, should we put together care packages when we meet in October? Is that too cheesy, too late? Can we volunteer in small groups to help with donation sorting at local dropoff points, whether foodbanks or Salvation Army centers? Perhaps we could do something for local college students who were displaced, or individuals and families who were relocated to the Pittsburgh or DC areas (or will have been, by October)?
What other suggestions do y'all have? I'm not coming up with much in terms of our particular talents for organization and food service being useful.

 | 11:54 am - Unscheduled randomness in DC So someone was supposed to poke someone else about social events in the greater DC area. Unfortunately, I was neither of these people, so I don't know who the poker and pokee were supposed to be, or whether they have in fact organized events they didn't invite me to :)
Does anyone want to have a modest get-together in DC sometime before Homecoming (October 27-30)?

 | 07:37 pm - Alumni Reception in Arlington Well, it's well past the RSVP deadline, but I figured I'd pass this on since I just heard about it.
The APhiO National organization is holding an APhiO Alumni reception on Friday in Arlington, VA.
I don't think I'll attempt to go -- getting from Greenbelt to Arlington during rush hour isn't really on my list of happy fun things to do. Unless, perhaps, other people want to put together a contingent, in which case I might be up for that.

 | 07:45 pm - Carnival Schedule I don't know how many people this will surprise, since many of you just got my two emails in a row with it, but here's the APOKCAA schedule for Carnival again. And for a more than trifecta, it's also available on our events page. (This is cross-posted between here and my journal, too, for added redundancy.)

 | 06:39 pm - Lobster Tales suggestions In case anyone can remember back that far, at Homecoming, we discussed formulating a set of questions to ask the undergrad chapter in order to aid them in writing Lobster Tales with a minimum of pain and suffering. This would be something in line with service to the alumni -- we can act as representatives of the alumni community and let the chapter know what alumni in general would like to hear.
Below are some questions that I've come up with -- does anybody have additions/subtractions/edits? I doubt that I am representative of all Kappa alumni everywhere, and I know I have writers block. My philosophy is that the questions should be simple enough that writing an article is no harder than a short class writing assignment, but other people are free to add questions that don't fit that heuristic.

 | 10:37 am - Otherwise known as a call for traffic I randomly put in interests (with input from mcreegan, of course) when I created this LJ community back in October. Is there anything else we, as an organization or as a group of Kappa alumni, should be interested in? Any of the ones on the list that make no sense/aren't really interesting/are misspelled?
Here are our current interests, for reference.
(By the way, posting access is completely open -- I'm really not the only person who can post here, and you don't have to be a member to post or comment.)
