AP Environmental Science [10 Sep 2009|07:28pm]

anyonefortennis
Hi all,

I'm a senior this year and due to scheduling conflicts, I wasn't able to take the Honors Environmental Science Course I wanted to take. Environmental is a genuine interest of mine and I was thinking of challenging the AP. Not so much for the credit, but the test as proof that I studied it on my own. that way I would have something to write about in the "Is there any other information about your academic career you would like to share?" on the application, to account for a *somewhat* easier senior schedule.

Has anyone on this community ever challenged it before? If not, and you've taken it, do you think that it would be too much to absorb on my own? I have a great relationship with the teacher so I could probably get extra help, and i've been in an Envirothon club for the last four years so i have a decent background knowledge. My only other AP this year is Chemistry so it's not like I'm booked solid. Thoughts?

(to the person two posts below me, it was language that got in the way for me too :p)

How to Pass A.P Biology

This is just a helpful guide on how to pass the AP Biology test. It's just basic information, but if I had known this stuff last year it would have made my life alot easier. Check it out!

I'm a senior in high school, I start school on Monday.
I talked to my counselor today, and I have to choose between AP Environmental Science and AP Spanish.

Would taking one over the other be better for college admissions?
(I mean just in general - I'm majoring in theatre, so I don't think one over the other would matter much if one was judging by the material each class deals with).

I've always been told that colleges like when you take a language for all four years, but I don't know.
And when it comes to taking the AP tests, I'm almost certain that I wouldn't take the one in Spanish (because the Spanish teachers here are bs and I've hardly learned anything in the three years I've taken it, even if I get a good grade in the class it won't mean anything because the teacher is easy as heck), and I'm almost certain that I would take the AP test for APES.

The tests don't matter as much to me, though, I do AP mostly for the higher gpa to help with getting scholarships and financial aid.

Thanks!

I'm going to be a junior this coming school year, and I'm signed up to take:
-AP US History
-AP Biology
-AP Eng Lang/Comp

I'm just curious if anyone who has taken these classes has any advice on how to maintain good grades? Also, what was your experience like studying these subjects? Thanks!

Can you take more than one AP class per subject (or any other class for that matter)?
What year of high school did you start taking AP classes?
I'm kinda of curious.

Physics and English Language + Comp, general testing question [18 May 2009|05:52pm]

[ music | Stereolab ]

Who else took English Language and Composition? Physics B?

Also, I was looking at the score breakdown for all tests from last year and was wildly confused at how the curve works. It's obviously not a bell curve; there was maybe one test out of all of them that had students predominantly scoring three. most were skewed towards either one or five. Does anyone know how they curve it?

Hi. Me again.

So, uh. During the Biology test, I asked if I could leave during the break if I decided the test was too hard for me (teacher didn't get to units on human body systems, ecology, or evolution -- so not my fault).

They said if I left in the middle of the test, I could jeopardize everyone else's papers.

For some reason, they don't feel a need to inform us of this possibility before testing.

Because halfway through Macro-Economics today, one of the test-takers left at the break.

I kept trying to tell the coordinator we had to go get him, call him, or whatever, but she just KEPT TALKING and didn't even acknowledge me and it got to the point where if I kept talking, I'd be the one jeopardizing everyone's exams.

So now, our teacher knows, and she is mad. She is very mad. We don't know yet, but 37 peoples' tests could be invalidated because no one told him not to fxskin leave.

Can anyone confirm/deny that this will happen? Because so far, 'might', 'could', and 'probably' are being used a lot in regards to the situation.

International AP Lit exam [12 May 2009|08:58am]

People have been discussing the AP Lit/Composition exam, but the questions that are given in the US are different than the international ones, so I was wondering what books international students used for the free response question?

AP English Lit/Lang Reading Experiences [10 May 2009|05:52pm]

saramiskismet
Well, discussion in the post below me got me interested.... there's only 3 people in my AP English Lit class (50% of it dropped) and only 7 in total, so I don't really get the chance to talk about the books with people who enjoy them.

What books have you all read in your Lit/Lang classes?

In my Language class last year, we did very little novel study, and a lot of essay/article reading. But the novels we did read were Old Man and the Sea and The Great Gatsby. Have to say, while I ~get~ Old Man, I didn't enjoy it. Gatsby in comparison was much more enjoyable if less rich.

In Literature, we read as a class: Beowulf and Grendel (an existential 20th century novel of Beowulf's development... REALLY good!); Heart of Darkness, "The Madwoman of Chaillot", Hamlet. In a literary criticism assignment I chose to read three Gabriel Garcia Marquez novels: Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The General in his Labyrinth, and One Hundred Years of Solitude.

So, since we're past the two-day no discussion rule for the essays . . . what book did you guys use? I thought that the prompt was so . . . well, open - you could have applied that to just about any book ever written! Anyways, I used Hedda Gabler, General Gabler's guns, and how their symbolism of masculine authority displayed Hedda, Eilert, and Brack's relationship with society's gender roles via each respective character's interaction with the guns. I think I did well enough on it, it was probably my best essay.

What about the other essays? I feel pretty confident about the poetry essay and not at all confident about the prose essay.

Background information: My school has us take our AP exams in the back rooms of a church.

During the multiple choice section of my gov exam, several things happened. First, the exam proctor kept talking on her phone. She'd go to the stairwell (which echoed) to talk, and then would come back into the room to continue proctoring. This happened several times. One of the times while she was on the phone, loud church music suddenly started playing in the room through the overhead speakers. She didn't notice it because she was on the phone, and it startled all of us, so a few students stood up and started trying to figure out how to turn it off. She stuck her head into the room (still on the phone) and got mad at us, not realizing the music was on. We finally got it to turn off using a random dial on the wall. Once she realized why we were all distracted, she asked us if we wanted to file an incident report, but we said no because we weren't sure what would happen to our exams if such a report was filed. So we continued testing. Later on, one of the students showed up late, so she had a whole whispered conversation in the stairwell (which echoed!) with him. He finally left; she came back into the room and called time.

I usually finish the multiple choice section about five to ten minutes early; this time, I didn't answer fifteen questions. I am fully confident that this was due to the interruptions (I was sitting in the chair directly next to the stairwell).

Is this something I should report? If so, how? What would the ramifications of this be? Or should I just suck it up and deal with it?

All of this occurred during the multiple choice section; there were no interruptions during the free response.

Thank you!

My AP Gov teacher claims that for the FRQs, it is perfectly okay and in fact preferred that students answer in bullet-point form. That is, we don't need to write full essays as long as we fully answer the question. Having taken APUSH and AP Euro in the past, this seems a bit strange. Is he correct?

College Campuses Admit Week [27 Mar 2009|12:25am]

College Campuses - Admit Week

THE END OF MARCH and early April mark the most nerve-wracking and exciting time of the year for high school seniors: spring is in the air, senioritis is in full bloom, "prom" is a word issued in every other conversation, and of course, college admissions are sent out. Although we all feel like we will have completed our lives' purpose by April 1, life continues, just like the emails from That One College in Texarkana keep coming even after you marked them as spam.

That's why the Mods at College Campuses have decided to hold a 'Meet 'n' Greet' of sorts on April 5th to serve the 156 members of the community (or anyone else who stumbles upon it on an evening stroll through the internet). )

For those of you who have taken AP Calculus,
What AP test do you recommend taking, the AB test or the BC test, and why?
My teacher is recommending the AB test but I was planing to take the BC one instead but now i'm not sure.
By the way, I have the class everyday year round so I have taken both AB and BC, and math is not my strong point.

While I'm at it, what are your thoughts on re-taking an AP test? US History in particular. I got a 2 on it last year and I kind of want to give it another shot.

AP Music Theory [15 Oct 2008|12:37am]

flutistically
Hey guys quick question.

I made a 4 on the AP Music Theory exam, which is cool and all. But I've been wondering whether or not it's wise to actually take advantage of this college credit and skip freshman theory in college. My reason for concern is because I took AP Music Theory my junior year. I am now a senior, and not in a music theory class. And on top of that I would not have music theory my freshman year in college. And it kind of scares me to think of going into a college sophomore level theory class after two years of not having theory on a regular basis.

Question is, has anyone out there experienced something similar to this? Would you suggest that I just go ahead and take freshman theory even though I tested out of it just to be safe, or should I opt for saving (a good amount of) money by just skipping that class altogether?

Thanks for any help. :)

AP US Govt Prep books. [04 Sep 2008|07:41pm]

notso_koolaid
My AP Gov teacher recommends that we get a prep book for the course. I've heard that a lot of people recommend the Princeton Review prep book for this specific test, but my teacher says that he doesn't recommend it at all, says it "lacks substance," and instead vouches for Barron's and Peterson.

So I'm conflicted. So those who did well in/on the class/test, what do you recommend?

A few people recommended that I use David Myers' Psychology (Eighth Edition) to help me prepare for the AP Psychology Exam (self-study). I recently managed to come across the seventh edition in modules for $2, so I of course bought the book. Is there a huge difference between the editions? Should I really look for the eighth edition, or will it not make that much of a difference?

Thank you!

Just out of curiosity... [29 Aug 2008|08:18pm]

inside0ut_89
What are your standards for AP grades?

It varies with different subjects, but in general, a 3 is an "eh, not bad" grade for me, and 4's and 5's are reasons to celebrate. Overall, I'm pretty proud of the fact that I got all 4's (besides one 5) on my AP tests, although with my AP Gov test, I definitely should have gotten a 5 with all the effort I put in. Anyways, I've noticed that in this community, some people consider 4's as disappointing. Is it because you set higher standards? Is there anyone who gets excited about passing the tests with a 3?

And another question out of curiosity, how many AP's did you take each year? For me:
Sophomore: 1 (Euro)
Junior: 2 (APSUH and English Comp)
Senior: 4 classes, 5 tests (APES, Calc AB, Spanish, Gov, and I took the English Lit test)

I will be a sophomore this coming year and have signed up for both US History and Language and Composition. Though this most likely has been asked before, what are the "best" review books for these classes, in your opinion? I've heard Princeton Review and Barrons suggested for APUSH and APLAC, respectively.

Also, I'm planning on taking Literature and Composition as well as Calculus or Statistics in my junior year. Four years of English are required at my school and, quite frankly, at that point there wouldn't be much else available to take. As for the math, after sophomore year I'll have taken all math classes available save AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Could someone please give some advice on which math class might be easier, more enjoyable and/or more beneficial? It'd also be great to get some opinions on any of the other classes, too. I'm really not yet sure what I've gotten myself into.

ap scores on resume [17 Jul 2008|09:29pm]
waifesque

hey so i know that ap scores have no effect on college admissions and that they're sent in after one's admitted
but i also know alot of people just write their ap scores on their resumes for quick reference and whatnot

i've done fairly well on most of my ap exams through highschool.
the only 2 exams i'm worried about is
ap world history - 2 (first ap exam freshman year...and did not study at all)
and ap euro - 3 (again, i performed pretty poorly in the class out of laziness)

i don't plan on sending the ^ scores to receive credit...so i was wondering
1. is one required to put their ap scores on their resume?
2. if yes, does one have to put ALL of the scores theyve gotten? or can they just put the ones they want to?
3. is my ap world history score going to lessen my chances of admissions? is it worth it to expunge the score?

if anyone could help me with my questions since i'm really confused, i'd really appreciate it :)

cheap AP prep books + other prep materials!~ (princeton, cliffsnotes, etc.) [16 Jul 2008|12:01am]

isosohungy
Over the last three years of high school, I have managed to accumulate a small wealth of AP prep books; however, like many AP students I am burdened with the task of keeping these guides as a memento of the unspeakable exams held during May of e/ year.

So rather than letting them go to waste, I'm offering YOU the opportunity to get the best review guides at a discounted price! Yay!

Here's what I got:

AP U.S. History:
-REA-AP United States History (2006): $4
*slightly used
-Cracking the AP U.S. History Exam (Princeton Review) 2002-2003: $6
*slightly used
-Cracking the AP U.S. History Exam (Princeton Review): $8
*BRAND SPANKIN' NEW
-AP United States History (REA) - The Best Test Prep for the AP Exam: 7th Edition: $11
*BRAND SPANKIN' NEW

On top of using note cards, I studied for the exam from the REA guide and Princeton Review guides listed above. I've asked my teacher and several upperclassmen on which guide I should get and the majority of them pointed to the REA. The practice tests are GREAT! You can't find any other prep book for US history that has as accurate questions as the REA does. The Princeton, though VERY good review material, doesn't have as good practice tests. I hardly cracked two of the guides listed above due to a lack of time and patience, that’s why they’re brand spankin’ new! I received a 5 on the US history test.

AP English Language and Composition:
-CliffsAP English Language and Composition (Cliffs AP): $8
*BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW
Very, very good practice tests and review material. If you’re going to get a guide for AP eng, get cliffs notes. I got a 4 on the test with skimming of the practice test questions.

AP European History
-Cliffs Ap European History: $5
-Cracking the AP European History Exam: $8
Studied my a** off for this exam because it was my first AP evah! Cliffs were great review because it was succinct and summarized a lot of the material; however, if you’re anal and want a detailed review, check out the Princeton Review guide, it’s great for memorizing info to use on those FRQs!

AP Physics
- Cracking the AP Physics B and C Exams, 2006-2007 Edition (College Test Prep): $9
My goodness, what in the world would I do without this book?! To be honest, I barely learned anything in physics class. The only reason I was able to get through the exam was because of this book and several generous tutors. I received a 5. Definitely the hardest AP test I ever took.

MSG if interested! Please no emails.

HELP! ANNOTATING WUTHERING HEIGHTS FOR AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE! [14 Jul 2008|09:50pm]

okay so i'm taking AP english language next year and we have to read wuthering heights & annotate it over the summer.
we also have to write a 3 page essay that either 'defends, qualifies, or challenges the claim that heathcliff and catherine truly love one another.'

now obviously i have to get to reading/annotating the novel first...and i have to annotate primarily for 'STYLISTIC & THEMATIC TECHNIQUES". (WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!?!)
i'm generally a good annotater but i'm freaking out bc i want these to be good...so any help on what i should specifically annotate for? anything to look for??
i have no idea and i feel like my annotations are absolute crud.

What do ap english teachers look for in annotations on the ap lvl? any tips, help, advice.?!?!

I'm taking APUSH and Chem this year (my junior year).  What review books would you all suggest for me to buy?  It seems like a lot of people think that the AMSCO book is good for APUSH, but I don't know, it seems kind of lengthy?

I just took Euro and got a 4, which I'm pretty proud of, but I'd really like to get a 5 on both of these: problem is, I don't know if I'll be able to, seeing as I studied for about 2 months in advance for Euro; I'm not sure how much better I can prepare than that.

One last thing.  I'm debating on taking Bio, Calc, and English (I'm really not sure if it's Literature or Language that my school offers, honestly, it doesn't even say- but I really want to take it no matter which one it is, I'm hoping to write novels someday) my senior year, but I'm afraid that that would too much to handle.  Thoughts?

Thanks!

New here with a question! [31 May 2008|10:14pm]

skyway
So I've only just joined this community in order to prepare for the AP classes I'm taking in my upcoming senior year (U.S. History, English Lit, Chem, Calc AB). These are the first AP classes I've ever taken - at my school it's basic protocol to take AP classes only during junior and senior year, and I wasn't eligible for any of these junior year.

Unfortunately, since I've decided to go ahead and take them senior year, I've run into a problem. Every senior is required to take a semester of Government (not AP Gov, though) - but the only two periods Government is offered conflict with APUSH and AP Chem. A few girls I know had problems with this last year, and I think all of them ended up dropping Chem, but I really want to take it. Both teachers are amazing, and I've done really well in both subjects over the past year, so I don't want to give them up! Should I drop one semester of APUSH to take Government? If so, which semester? I don't want to drop a semester of Chem, since I'd have to try and make up labs, and I'm not as strong in the sciences as humanities. Or... should I try to convince my guidance counselor to let me take AP Gov online? I would actually love to do that, but I don't even know if it's acceptable. I'm definitely going to talk to him when school starts (apparently schedules have not been determined yet, since we have a teacher shortage, so I can't discuss it over the summer), and probably the APUSH teacher, but I'd love to hear advice from people who've taken AP classes. Thanks so much!

It's....it's...over! (Well...as long as you don't have human geography :'D)
Anyone here a senior? Has it kicked in yet that AP's are DONE--FOREVER?

AP Language/Comp. How'd everyone do?
And did anyone reference the picture, at all?

I have mixed feelings. I'm hoping for a four.

So, what did you all think about the AP psych exam?

I felt pretty comfortable with the MC, and I was relieved to find that I had studied everything on the free response. On the other hand, I came alarmingly close to not finishing because I had lots to write about. Overall I think I did pretty well, but I had an amazing teacher this year.

How do you think you did?

Who else is thoroughly terrified of Microeconomics? Macro, not so much, but I'm regretting paying for micro.
